Mary RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Mary RICE [QQ1622, w283] (Isaac3, Matthew2, Edmund1) , born in 1706, (16 Sep 1707 per Rice Gen'l Register)1 {p33},2 {p32}, daughter of Isaac RICE and Sybil COLLINS. She died 1 Dec 1745 at Worcester, MA (under the name Curtis)66 {p146},2 {p32}. Note that this Mary has been confused with her second cousin Mary (WRN 227) the daughter of Nathaniel Rice, born about the same time. The Rice Gen'l Register mistakenly lists the other Mary's birth date for this Mary, thus increasing the confusion. Because the Sudbury vital records and church records list a birth and baptism only for Nathaniel's daughter, and not Isaac's, it would be tempting to conclude that only one Mary existed, but it is clear from Isaac's will of 1717-18 that he did indeed have a daughter Mary living at that time.1 {p33},2 {p32}

She married Ephraim CURTIS 23 Dec 1729 at Sudbury, MA, listed as Ephraim of Worcester11,1 {p33},2 {p32},45 {p4},70 {p325}. He was born 15 Jul 1706 at Sudbury11,2 {p32}, died 1 Jan 1747/48 at Worcester, MA66 {p146},2 {p32}, son of Ephraim CURTIS and Mary STONE.

When Ward conflated the two contemporary Isaac Lelands, he also confused the name of one of the brides, describing Mary as Mary West, rather than Mary Hunt. It is possible that Ward had evidence pointing to Mary as a widow whose maiden name was West, but we cannot confirm or refute that scenario.
