Rebecca HUBBARD

Rebecca HUBBARD [QQ1973] (Joseph⁴, Hannah³ RICE, Samuel², Edmund¹) , born 11 Jul 1717 at Concord, MA (under the name Hubburd)^{35 {p90},14 {7, 18}}, daughter of Joseph HUBBARD and Rebecca BULKLEY. She died 18 Oct 1806, aged 90y at Concord (under the name Barrett)^{35 {p328},14 {p18}}. Rebecca Barrett, wife of Concord's militia colonel, helped hide military stores and equipment about the farm then remained at home to protect family and property from the expected British. She fed the searching soldiers upon request but refused money thrown at her commenting that "we are commanded to feed our enemy" and that their coins were "the price of blood". Rebecca's actions saved valuable military materials from discovery as well as her property from damage and her son from arrest.⁵¹⁵

She married Col James BARRETT 21 Dec 1732 at Concord, both of Concord^{35 {p131},14 {7, 18}}. He was born 31 Jul 1710 at Concord^{35 {p75},14 {p18}}, died 11 Apr 1779, aged 69y at Concord^{35 {p416},14 {p18}}, son of Benjamin BARRETT and Lydia MINOT. During the so-called French and Indian War, he served as a militia captain at Oswego, NY, Ft. Ticonderoga and Crown Point. A person of unusual courage, Barrett was recognized for his strong and forceful presence. In December 1757, he and other military leaders supported the formation of a Picket or Provincial Guard to defend against French and Indian attacks. The concept would be adopted in later years as minute man companies.

Colonel Barrett was in charge of the Concord militia. He organized the formation of the militia troops as they arrived in Concord to repel the British on the morning of April 19, 1775. He was also in charge of the military stores of Concord, most of which he stored at his home one mile from the Old North Bridge. He led his militia units into battle several times that day, including the most devastating attack on the British, Bloody Angle.

In the aftermath of war, Concord looked to Barrett for leadership by sending him as their representative to Boston in September, 1768 to address crucial matters of the day. He would continue this role in the Massachusetts General Court until 1774 and then become Concord's delegate to the Provincial Congress.⁵¹⁵
