     Anthony Haswell was born on 6 April 1756 at Portsmouth, England.5,6 He is the son of William Haswell and Elizabeth (?).8 Anthony Haswell married Elizabeth Rice, daughter of Silas Rice and Lucy Knapp, on 30 September 1799 at Pownal, VT.1,5,6 Anthony Haswell died on 22 May 1816 at Bennington, VT.9,5,6 He was buried at Old Bennington Center Cemetery, Bennington, VT, His obituary said, in part:
"Anthony Haswell, a Patriot of the Revolution, Printer and Founder of the Vermont Gazette 1783. A Sufferer in the cause of freedom under the Sedition Act of 1798. He died 22 May 1816, age 60."9
     Anthony was the Founder & Editor of the Vermont Gazette.3
"Gazette July 9, 1844: 44 years ago this day our honored grandfather Anthony Haswell, editor of the Vermont Gazette, was liberated from jail after having been confined 2 months & paying $262.33 fine and costs under the Sedition Act. His heirs and legal representatives tender their thanks to the present Congress of the U.S. for the law of the 17th year 1844, refunding them the fine and costs and interest."3 He was a Congregationalist.5
