Solomon Cook was born circa 1753. He was the son of Enoch Cook Sr and Lucy Rice.1 Solomon Cook was baptized on 4 March 1753 at 1st Church, Worcester, MA; (given as the birth per Supplement).3,4 Marriage banns for Solomon Cook and Susannah Flagg were published on 30 September 1781 at Charlton, MA; listed as Susanna of Spencer.5 Solomon Cook married Susannah Flagg, daughter of Samuel Flagg and Grace Fisk, on 20 February 1782 at Spencer, MA; listed as Solomon of Charlton.6,4 Solomon Cook married 2nd Charlotte Scott on 11 July 1816 at Shoreham, VT, her third husband.7 Solomon Cook died on 20 January 1831 at Attica, Genesee Co, NY.4
Solomon Cook was in the military serving in the American Revolution as a Private in the Massachusetts Line. He enlisted from Charlton, Mass. at the end of April 1775 and served in Captain Campbell's Co. of Col. Larned's Reg. until the last of October 1775 when he enlisted in the Continental Service for one year in Captain Danforth's Co., Col. William Shephard's Reg. of the State of Massachusetts. He was in the Battle of Trenton and also the Battle of Princeton in New Jersey. He was discharged the last of January 1777. He was granted a pension in 1818 for this service (Pension # S-43375, National Archives). The "1818 Published List of Pensioners - New York" - p. 363, "Solomon Cook, Private, Mass. Line". The "1835 Published Pension Roll - New York - Genessee County" p. 147, "Solomon Cook, Private, Massachusetts Line; on Roll 24 November 1818: commencement of pension, 14 May f1818; d. 20 January 1831 age 77 years."8 [:CR] Five generations of the first family of Solomon Cook are buried in the Village Cemetery, Bridport, Vermont (Bridport Vital Records). A present day descendant (1983) of this family is Thomas D Cook of Shoreham, Vermont.
The second family of Solomon Cook was orphaned when the youngest child, David Scott Cook, was 6 years old and by Court order, they were sent to live with various half-brothers and sisters in Ohio and Wisconsin. David Scott Cook lived with his half-brother, Christopher Randall, in Michigan where he went to school in White Pigeon, Michigan. Later he attended school in Indiana and then studied with doctors and became an M.D. He first practiced in Jefferson Co., Wisconsin in 1850 and then moved to Iowa where he practiced and married in Clinton and Jackson Counties, Iowa. His autobiography is in "Portrait and Biographical Album of Jackson Co., Iowa" publish 1889 by Chapman Brothers of Chicago. This is confirmed by the 1850 US Census of Wisconsin and the 1860 US Census of Iowa.
Mary Elizabeth Cook was in Wisconsin in the 1850 US Census with her husband and two children. She lived near Lake Winnebago and learned herbal medicine from the Indians. Later she moved to Jackson Co., Iowa, near her brother who was a doctor. This is confirmed by the 1860 US Census of Jackson Co. Iowa. The census lists her occupation as "Doctress". She died in 1879 in Nemaha Co., Nebraska. There is an article about her death in the Pawnee City newspaper on record in the Nebraska State Library. It is also recorded in the Strawn Family Bible held by the descendants of her daughter, Margaret C. Mandeville Strawn.8
