Deacon James Woods was born on 30 October 1694 at Marlborough, MA.2,3 He was the son of Deacon John Woods and Lydia Rice. Deacon James Woods married Dorothy Barnes, daughter of Deacon John Barnes and Hannah Howe, on 19 March 1718/19 at Marlborough, MA.2,4 Deacon James Woods married 2nd Hephzibah Eager, daughter of Zerubbabel Eager and Hannah Kerley, on 20 January 1735/36 at Marlborough, MA.2,4 Deacon James Woods died on 10 April 1772 at Marlborough, MA; aged 77 (87 per Ward manuscript).1,5,6 He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.5
There is some controversy over the parentage of this James Woods. Ward (p. 114) gives his birth date as 1685 and his parents as Deacon James Woods and Hopestill Ward. The Rice Genealogical Register (p. 6) gives his birth date as 30 October 1694 and his parents as Deacon John Woods and Lydia Rice. Both of these are real persons, as confirmed by the vital records of Marlborough, but obviously only one can be this James. The issue is clouded by the fact that the editors of the published vital records included material from an unpublished manuscript by Ward himself and, in particular, specified the wrong age at death for this Deacon James Woods (i.e., 87 instead of 77). In fact, the age at death was not entered in the original vital records, but it is inscribed on the gravestone, still standing and clearly legible in the Springhill Cemetery in Marlborough. Besides the explicit age at death, we have additional evidence pointing to the 1694 James: Deacon James married his first wife Dorothy Barnes in 1718/9, when the 1685 James would have been unusually old for a first marriage (again, we can be sure it was Deacon James who married Dorothy, since his grave is right next to hers and to that of his second wife Hepzibah). We therefore must conclude that Ward was in error, and the Rice Genealogical Register was correct.1,7,3 He left a will on 16 September 1769 at Marlborough, MA,, mentioning sons David, James, and Jonathan, all sons by deceased wife Dorothy; sons Moses and George; daughters Hepzibah Woods, Dorothy Rice, and Lucy Woods; Aaron Witt son of Sarah of Brookfield; son Moses to be Executor.8

Thomas Smith1,2,3
Thomas Smith was born on 29 July 1658 at Sudbury, MA, but your authors have not yet found proof that this birth record refers to the same Thomas.4 He died on 9 April 1718 at Sudbury, MA; but the identification is uncertain here as well.4 He died before 1735; as his wife Abigail was listed as a widow at her death.5
There have been claims in the popular press that Abigail (Smith) Adams, wife of President John Adams, was a descendant of Thomas and Abigail (Rice) Smith. These claims are unfounded.
