     Daniel Duncan was born on 13 February 1711/12 at Billerica, MA, under the name Dunkin.4,5 He was the son of John Duncan and Sarah Dutton. Daniel Duncan married Sarah Rice, daughter of Gershom Rice and Elizabeth Balcom, before 1721; but the marriage is not found in any of the Massachusetts vital records, including those of Worcester. Ward mistakenly refers to Daniel as 'John Duncan' (the name of Daniel's father).1,6,3
     Note that Petersham was not incorporated until 1754. The births of the Duncan children, which all occurred before that, do not appear in the Petersham vital records.

Nancy (?)1,2,3

     Nancy (?) was born circa 1702, as calculated from her gravestone. She married Zebadiah Allen, son of Benjamin Allen and Frances Rice, before 1777; (Ward incorrectly took Hannah Grout to be the second wife of Zebadiah Senior and gave the 1761 date of her marriage to Zebadiah Junior. The latter had removed to Rutland District by 1761, and the marriage record clearly describes the groom as Zebadiah of Rutland District. Unfortunately, no record is found of the father's second marriage.1,3 Nancy (?) died on 7 June 1777 at Sudbury, MA; aged 75y, under the name Allen, from smallpox.2,4 She was buried at Tower Hill Draper Cemetery, Wayland, MA.4

     Silence Rice was born on 30 April 1703 at Sudbury, MA.1,2,5,6 She was the daughter of Jonas Rice and Mary Stone. Silence Rice married Ezra Rice King, son of Lt Samuel Rice King and Abigail Clapp.2,3,4,7 Silence Rice married John Bond; but the time and place of this marriage are unknown. The only evidence for it is Silence's gravestone in Templeton. The Worcester vital records show a marriage between a John Bond Jr and a Silence King in 1751, but that was a young couple who proceded to raise a family in Worcester and later Conway.8,9,10,1,5 Silence Rice died on 8 December 1763 at Templeton, MA; aged 60y, under the name Bond.8,5 She was buried at Center Cemetery, Templeton, MA.8
     Her gravestone in Templeton states that she married first Ezra King and second John Bond, and many have claimed that her second marriage was in 1751. There was indeed a Silence King who married a John Bond at Worcester in 1751, but that was a much younger Silence who continued bearing children for many years afterward and eventually died at Conway in 1812 aged 83.8,11,1,5 Neither the marriage of Ezra nor the births of any of his children are entered in the Sudbury vital records. Several of the births are found in the Worcester vital records, however.

     Adonijah Rice was born on 7 November 1714 at Worcester, MA.4,5 He was the son of Jonas Rice and Mary Stone. Adonijah Rice was baptized on 6 July 1715 at Sudbury, MA.6 He married Persis Gates, daughter of Jonathan Gates and Persis Shepard, circa 1739 at Worcester, MA; Persis of Worcester, and they resided there. (not found in the published records).7,2 Adonijah Rice died on 20 January 1802 at Bridport, VT.8
     At one point, a contributor claimed that Adonijah's daughter Abigail was really a son Nathaniel, but without offering any evidence in support. Now that the vital records have been examined, it is clear that Abigail was indeed Abigail, as stated in Ward and two of the Supplements. The remnant of the original Abigail-renamed-Nathaniel is still maintained in the ERA database for future reference as #3163, but not linked to any family. He and Persis Gates resided circa 1739 at Worcester, MA.9 Adonijah Rice was in the military circa 1755 serving in the French and Indian War, member of Capt. Andrew Dalrymple's company for five months, ending 12 Dec. 1755. In 1756 he was a sergeant in the company, "age 43, cooper, born and resident of Worcester."9,10 He resided before 1802 at Bridport, VT, with his son, Abel, whom he survived.8

     According to Ward, Elizabeth Flagg bequeathed to Jonas (her grandson): " '"the cane and steelyards that were his great grandfather's'. They are worth more than some men's autographs, that are selling for $25 and upwards. His great-grand father was a just judge, and weighed out to every one his portion with an even beam. The steelyards and his cane, that supported him on his way to and from the temple of justice, are worthy relics, and would be choice emblems for his family coat of arms, -- the one, an emblem of the community, supporting him in the discharge of his official duties; the other, of himself, on the seat of justice."6

     Elizabeth Rice was born on 3 November 1713 at Sudbury, MA.1,4,2,5 She was the daughter of Elisha Rice and Elizabeth Wheeler. Marriage banns for Elizabeth Rice and Jonas Livermore were published on 27 September 1735 at Weston, MA; listed as Jonas of Weston and Elizabeth of Sudbury.6 Elizabeth Rice married Jonas Livermore, son of Daniel Livermore and Mehitable Norcross, on 28 November 1735 at Sudbury, MA; (12 July 1736 per Weston records) listed as Jonas of Weston and Elizabeth of Sudbury.3,2,7,8 Elizabeth Rice died on 29 March 1799 at Leicester, MA; as widow Elizabeth Livermore. The Supplement and Rice Gen'l Register both mistakenly attribute this death to her husband Jonas.9,2,10
     Elizabeth Rice was also known as Elisha Rice; note that Ward gives only hearsay evidence about the name Elisha, which probably means he misread a handwritten note referring to 'Eliza.1'

     Mary Rice was born in 1706, (16 Sep 1707 per Rice Gen'l Register).1,2 She was the daughter of Isaac Rice and Sybil Collins. Mary Rice married Ephraim Curtis, son of Ephraim Curtis and Mary Stone, on 23 December 1729 at Sudbury, MA; listed as Ephraim of Worcester.1,3,2,4,5 Mary Rice died on 1 December 1745 at Worcester, MA; under the name Curtis.2,6
     Note that this Mary has been confused with her second cousin Mary (WRN 227) the daughter of Nathaniel Rice, born about the same time. The Rice Gen'l Register mistakenly lists the other Mary's birth date for this Mary, thus increasing the confusion. Because the Sudbury vital records and church records list a birth and baptism only for Nathaniel's daughter, and not Isaac's, it would be tempting to conclude that only one Mary existed, but it is clear from Isaac's will of 1717-18 that he did indeed have a daughter Mary living at that time.1,2

Ebenezer Leland1,2,3

Ebenezer Leland|b. 2 Jan 1657/58\nd. 30 Jun 1742|p13.htm#i1629|Henry Leland||p15.htm#i1829|Margaret Badcock||p15.htm#i1830|||||||||||||
     Ebenezer Leland was baptized on 2 January 1657/58 at Dorchester, MA; (not found in the published records).4 He was the son of Henry Leland and Margaret Badcock. Ebenezer Leland married Patience Rice, daughter of Matthew Rice and Martha Lamson; The marriage is proved by a marriage agreement in which Ebenezer gave half his land to Patience, daughter of Matthew Rice of Sudbury.3,2 Ebenezer Leland died on 30 June 1742 at Sherborn, MA; under the name Lealand.5,3
     There is a long-standing confusion about the husband of Patience Rice. Two possible candidates have been named: Ebenezer and Hopestill Leland, two brothers who both lived in Sherborne and who both had wives named Patience. In his book The Rice Family, Ward said that Patience Rice married Hopestill Leland as her second husband (the record of Hopestill's marriage shows the bride's name as Patience Holbrook). Ward was silent on the subject of Ebenezer Leland. Meanwhile, Morse's History of Sherborn asserts that Ebenezer's wife was Patience Sabin while Hopestill's was Patience Holbrook. More recently, the Rice Genealogical Register and Supplement 1 to The Rice Family concluded that Patience Rice's husband was Ebenezer Leland and cite a marriage agreement between Ebenezer and Patience to substantiate the relationship. According to the Supplement, that agreement gave half of Ebenezer's land to Patience Rice, daughter of Matthew and Martha Rice. Unfortunately, the description in the Supplement is clouded by a careless error: Ebenezer's date of baptism is inserted without the 'bp' notation, thus appearing to give this as the date for the marriage!
     The Sherborne and Sudbury vital records do not include any marriage of Patience Rice, nor any marriage of Ebenezer Leland to some other Patience, nor, indeed, the death of any male Holbrook in the period shortly before Hopestill Leland married Patience Holbrook. However, the Sherborne vital records do record the births of children to both Hopestill and Patience and Ebenezer and Patience. Your authors believe that Ebenezer Leland is the most likely husband and have included his family here as the family of Patience Rice. See under Hopestill Leland for the family as described by Ward.1,3,2
