Zephaniah Rice was born on 22 September 1700 at Marlborough, MA.^2,3 He was the son of Joshua Rice and Mary Sawyer. Zephaniah Rice married Mary Heywood, daughter of Deacon John Heywood and Sarah Blodgett, circa 1724 at Worcester, MA; (not found in the published records).¹ Zephaniah Rice died on 10 May 1730 at Worcester, MA; (1760 per Barton) aged 29y.^4,5,6 He was buried at Old Common Cemetery, Worcester, MA.⁴
Zephaniah Rice was Town Clerk between 1727 and 1729 at Worcester, MA.⁶ Zephaniah Rice's widow, Mary, settled his estate. "Daniel Heywood of Worcester is willing to be surety for his sister Rice, 29 June 1730." Inventory £1026.4.0.⁶

Silas Rice was born on 10 April 1695 at Marlborough, MA.^1,2 He was the son of Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker.
On 8 August 1704, while the Rices were spreading flax to dry near the house of Silas's uncle Thomas Rice, a small party of Caughnawaga Mohawks attacked the group, killing Silas's brother Nahor and capturing Silas and three other boys. The four captives were carried off to Canada, where Silas was adopted into the tribe and was given the name Tookanowras. He had a wife and children there.³

Timothy Rice was born on 15 September 1697 at Marlborough, MA.^1,2 He was the son of Edmund Rice and Ruth Parker. Timothy Rice died after 1790 at Canada.

Abigail Clapp was born in 1675.⁴ She was the daughter of Ezra Clapp and Abigail Pond. Abigail Clapp married Lt Samuel Rice King, son of Samuel Rice and Elizabeth King, on 30 October 1693 at Milton, MA; listed as Samuel of Sudbury and Abigail of Milton.^1,2,3,5,6 Abigail Clapp died on 6 July 1713 at Sudbury, MA; under the name King.^7,8
There is uncertainty about the parents of Sarah King (q.v.). LDS records list her parents both as Thomas King and Elizabeth Clapp of Charlemont (q.v.) and as Samuel Rice King and Abigail Clapp of Sudbury. The published vital records of Charlemont, Milton, Scituate, and Sudbury are silent about the birth of a Sarah King. The baptismal records for Sudbury begin in November 1706. We know from the published vital records of Milton and Sudbury that Samuel King alias Rice was married at Milton and lived at Sudbury. Based on proximity, Samuel and Abigail would seem more plausible than Thomas and Elizabeth to be Sarah King's parents. However, neither claim can be substantiated. Indeed, both Samuel and Abigail died rather suddenly in 1713, and their family dispersed.

Edward Rice King was born on 4 August 1705 at Sudbury, MA, (17 February per Ward, based on a statement on that date in 1726 that Edward was then of age).^1,2,3,4 He was the son of Lt Samuel Rice King and Abigail Clapp. Edward Rice King was baptized on 25 May 1707 at First Parish Church, Sudbury, MA.⁵
On 27 January 1718/9, John Rice [WRN 23] was named guardian for five children (not named, but presumably including Edward) of Samuel King, alias Rice. However, John Rice died that September, and his son Moses [WRN 163] was named Edward's new guardian on 20 June 1720. The final account of the gaurdian was submitted on 17 February 1726[/27], after Edward came of age. One item in the account was a share in the estate of Edward's grandfather Clapp in Milton.¹

Lydia Fairbanks married Edward Rice, son of Samuel Rice and Mary Dix, on 25 May 1702 at Sherborn, MA.^1,2,4 Lydia Fairbanks died on 13 September 1755 at Marlborough, MA.^3,5
Lydia Fairbanks and Edward Rice resided at Marlborough, MA.³ Lydia Fairbanks left a will on 26 October 1752, proved 1 Dec. 1755. The will mentions daughters Martha Bannister, Persis Goodenow, and Elizabeth How; grandchildren: Lydia Woods, Mary, Zerviah, and Tabitha Goodenow; Ithamar, Levi, and Ebenezer Goodenow; William and Seth Oakes; and Esther Rice. Your authors have not found a birth record for any Lydia Woods who could be the granddaughter mentioned in the will. Indeed, since the only known granddaughter Lydia was Lydia Goodenow, it seems clear that the latter had married a Woods sometime before. At present, the only candidate is Jonathan Woods of Marlborough and possibly later of New Braintree.⁶

Samuel Ward married Sarah How, daughter of John How and Mary (?), on 6 June 1667 at Marlborough, MA; (the bride's maiden name is not shown).⁴ Samuel Ward died on 15 November 1729 at Marlborough, MA; (not found in the published records).^1,5
Note that Samuel Ward's brother Obadiah also had a daughter Mary born in 1676 who is sometimes confused with her cousin. However, proof of the identity of Caleb Rice's wife Mary should be found in the probate records concerning Samuel Ward's will. His will was contested in Probate Court by all his children and heirs except son Samuel, the chief beneficiary, but the heirs eventually came to an agreement.^6,7 He left a will on 22 May 1727.⁸

Rev. Caleb Rice was born on 13 December 1712 at Marlborough, MA.¹ He was the son of Deacon Caleb Rice and Mary Ward. Rev. Caleb Rice was baptized on 19 July 1713 at Marlborough, MA.¹ He married Priscilla Payson.^2,3 Rev. Caleb Rice died on 2 September 1759 at Sturbridge, MA; aged 46y.^4,5 He was buried at Old Cemetery, Sturbridge, MA.⁵
Rev. Caleb Rice graduated in 1730 at Harvard College, Cambridge, MA.² He was ordained on 29 September 1736 at Sturbridge, MA.⁴ He left a will on 2 August 1754 at Sturbridge, MA,, proved 3 Oct. 1759. The will mentioned wife Priscilla, sons Caleb and Nathan; daughters Priscilla and Mary Rice. Brothers-in-law Nathan, Thomas Payson and brother Jabez, Executors.⁴ According to Rev. Jesse Rice died in 1771 at Marlborough, MA; (incorrectly shown with his son Jesse's death date per Supplement) (not found in the published records).^5,2
Capt. Jesse Rice and Beulah (?) resided at Marlborough, MA.⁵ Jesse's two-story dwelling house at Marlborough was burnt in March 1769.⁵ Capt. Jesse Rice left a will on 10 December 1770 at Marlborough, MA,, proved 1 October 1771. The will mentioned wife Beulah; sons Joseph, Eleazer, Jesse, Ashbel, and William; daughter Mary, wife of Samuel Morse, Ruth Rice, Elizabeth and Beulah Rice. ... "To sons Ashbel and William, 150 acres in Monadnock, Mason's patent, township No. 5, NH; to Mary, wife of Samuel Morse, Ruth Rice, Elizabeth and Beulah Rice, all right in 1100 acres in New Marlboro', County of Berkshire, formerly called Housatonic."⁵ Guardianship of Jesse's three youngest children was committed to his widow, Bulah Rice, on 1 October 1771.

Ruth Rice married John Barnes, son of Deacon John Barnes and Hannah Howe, on 8 January 1750/51 at Marlborough, MA.^3,5 Ruth Rice died on 1 July 1752 at Marlborough, MA; aged 30y, under the name Barns, second wife of John.^3,5,6,7 She was buried at Old Common Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.⁷
The published genealogies have consistently confused this Ruth Rice with her second cousin, the daughter of Edmund Rice. The correct identifications can be deduced from their ages at death, as shown on their gravestones. Another important clue is the reference to this Ruth in her father's will as an apparently unmarried daughter as of 1744.

Your authors note that this person may not have existed. There is no record of her birth or marriage and no record of any children born in Sudbury to a Brintnal family whose mother was named Hannah. The birth date given by Ward looks suspiciously like a miscopied version of the birth date of the 'next' sibling Ann. Indeed, the only evidence for her is a reference in Jonathan Rice's will to a 'daughter Hannah Brintnal.' It is possible that the reference was meant for granddaughter Hannah instead.

Hannah Rice^1,2,3

     Hannah Rice was born on 15 February 1710/11 at Sudbury, MA.^4,1,2,3 She was the daughter of Phineas Rice and Elizabeth Willard. Hannah Rice was baptized on 1 July 1711 at First Parish Church, Sudbury, MA.⁵

     Although the Sudbury vital records show only one marriage of a Hannah Rice to a John Barber, Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, ascribes that marriage to two different Hannahs of about the same age, daughters of Ephraim and Phineas, respectively. Ward gives the nod to Phineas' daughter. However, Ephraim Rice remained at Sudbury while Phineas Rice moved to Stow when both Hannahs were still teenagers. Compelling evidence that Hannah was the daughter of Ephraim is supplied by a letter written by John Barber on 11 July 1755, while at a military camp, to his wife Hannah in Sudbury (see NEHGR 27:286). In the letter, he reports that Isaac Rice is in the same camp with him and is well. Significantly, the end of the letter indicates it was actually sent (for transmittal to Barber's wife) to Gershom Rice, in Sudbury, New-England. Gershom and Isaac Rice, sons of Ephraim, would have been Hannah's brothers. Therefore, your authors must conclude that the Hannah Rice who married John Barber was Hannah (WRN 238), daughter of Ephraim Rice.⁶

Joseph Rice^1,2

Joseph Rice was born on 24 May 1712 at Sudbury, MA.^3,2,4 He was the son of Phineas Rice and Elizabeth Willard. Joseph Rice was baptized on 29 October 1712 at First Parish Church, Sudbury, MA.⁵ Marriage banns for Joseph Rice and Sarah Bosworth were published on 28 September 1734 at Bristol, MA (RI).⁶ Joseph Rice married Sarah Bosworth on 7 November 1734 at Bristol, MA (RI).^6,1,2 Joseph Rice married 2nd Hannah Leland on 16 July 1739 at Grafton, MA.^7,2,8 Joseph Rice died on 12 February 1789 at Grafton, MA; aged 76y (According to Ward, Joseph died in the part of Grafton now Millbury, but your authors note that no part of Grafton ever became part of Millbury. His death is not entered in the vital records of Grafton. Still, the only reason his death appears in the published vital records of Sutton is that he was buried in that town.).^7,9,10 He was buried at Sutton, MA.¹⁰
Joseph Rice and Sarah Bosworth resided in 1735 at Grafton, MA.⁷ Joseph Rice was in the military in 1757 from Grafton.⁷ He left a will on 11 September 1787 at Grafton, MA,, proved 4 May 1789. The will mentioned wife Hannah; sons Phineas, Israel, Timothy, Caleb, and Daniel; heirs of daughters Elizabeth Pulsifer and Sarah Prentice; and daughter Mary Goodale.⁷
