Ruth Rice1,2

Ruth Rice married John Rice, son of Aaron Rice and Freedom French, on 6 March 1782 at Hardwick, MA; listed as John of Charlemont.1,2,3 Ruth Rice died on 12 September 1820 at Charlemont, MA; aged 62y (not found in the published records).4
Ruth's identity is uncertain. Two candidates have been proposed: (1) Ruth (WRN 1485) daughter of Phineas and (2) Ruth (WRN 1445) daughter of Solomon. The two were born within a year of each other, and both families lived for a time in Hardwick, where John's bride lived in 1782. However, the family of #1 (Ward's candidate) nearly all were of Rutland by the 1780's, and, indeed, Phineas had evidently moved away from Hardwick about 1756, before #1 was even born. By the same token, the family of #2 (the Supplement's candidate) nearly all lived in Hardwick. Ward nonetheless found reason to believe that #2 had moved to Northborough by 1782 and there married Elisha Rice (WRN 1999). That may of course be true, but the elimination of #2 would not necessarily mean that #1 was the one. Further investigation is needed. For example, note that the death record of her husband John implies, but does not explicitly say, that she was living in 1829, even though Ward claims she died in 1820. The published vital records of Charlemont do not show her death, but the records from 1850 onward were not included. She and John Rice resided at Charlemont, MA.4
