James Rice was born on 13 July 1726 at Framingham, MA.1,2,3 He was the son of Ezekiel Rice and Hannah Whitney. Marriage banns for James Rice and Mary Stearns were published on 18 January 1766 at Weston, MA; entered as 'James Rice of Sudbury.4' James Rice married Mary Stearns on 13 February 1766 at Weston, MA; Jonas/Jones of Sudbury and Mary of Weston.1,5,6,7
James Rice was also known as Jonas Rice.6 Your authors note that Ward attributes the same marriage event in Weston to two different people, James (WRN 432) and Jonas (WRN 746). Worse, Jonas may have been confused with yet another Jonas (WRN 979). Part of the confusion stems from the fact that the marriage intention filed at Weston a few weeks before the marriage shows the groom's name as 'James Rice of Sudbury', while the marriage record shows him as 'Jones Rice of Sudbury'. Several decades later, when the Weston town clerk forwarded a copy of the marriage record to the clerks of Sudbury and East Sudbury (now Wayland), the name was rendered as 'Jonas', but that is only secondary evidence. However, since no children are recorded for JAMES and Mary Rice, either in Sudbury or Framingham, while JONAS and Mary Rice of Sudbury had a series of children after this marriage, we believe it more likely that Jonas was the groom. Further research may establish whether or not James had settled in Sudbury by 1766. If he did not (and there is no known indication that he ever did), then the case for Jonas as groom becomes overwhelming.8,9,10,7
