     Abigail Rice was born circa 1700, according to her gravestone.² She married Capt Palmer Goulding on 4 December 1722 at Concord, MA; both of Sudbury.^3,4,5,6 Abigail Rice died in 1770 at Holden, MA; aged 70y.^7,2 She was buried at Plot 114, Old Common Cemetery, Worcester, MA.²
     There is uncertainty about the Rice ancestry of Abigail Rice. Ward says that she was "of another race", that is, not an Edmund Rice descendant. Ward ascribes her parents as Timothy Rice and Abigail Marrett of Concord, MA. In the year 2001 an Edmund Rice descendant from another line claimed that Abigail was Abigail Rice, daughter of John Rice and Abigail Clapp, born 8 September 1703 at Sudbury. Here is the evidence:
... Abigail Rice and Palmer Goulding were married at Concord, MA on 4 December 1722, both of Sudbury according to the Concord vital records.
... Abigail Goulding died in the year 1770 at age 70 according to a transcript of her gravestone at the Old Common Cemetery, Worcester.
... Timothy Rice, Ward's reputed father, estate was taken on 12 September 1692.
... Abigail Goulding's youngest child was born in the year 1739.
This is compelling evidence that Abigail was not the daughter of Timothy and Abigail Rice. However, given Ward's assertion that Abigail was not an Edmund Rice descendant we need evidence that she was the daughter of John and Abigail Rice of Sudbury (or of some other Rice). A will, estate probate record, or some other paper from John Rice that names daughter Abigail Goulding would be that compelling evidence.³

     Ward lists Palmer Goulding as spouse, but then goes on to explain that the Abigail Rice who married Goulding was a completely different person, the daughter of Timothy Rice of Concord (q.v.). It would appear that Ward initially believed that this Abigail was indeed the bride of Palmer Goulding but then found compelling contrary evidence. Regrettably, Ward does not describe the evidence.⁵

The basis for this birth date appears to be an entry in the Sudbury vital records with the year lost. The same entry has also been taken to match another Absalom who was baptized in 1709, WRN 264).^1,2 He was the son of Jonas Rice and Mary Stearns.¹

     At one point, a contributor claimed that Adonijah's daughter Abigail was really a son Nathaniel, but without offering any evidence in support. Now that the vital records have been examined, it is clear that Abigail was indeed Abigail, as stated in Ward and two of the Supplements. The remnant of the original Abigail-renamed-Nathaniel is still maintained in the ERA database for future reference as #3163, but not linked to any family. He and Persis Gates resided circa 1739 at Worcester, MA.⁹ Adonijah Rice was in the military circa 1755 serving in the French and Indian War, member of Capt. Andrew Dalrymple's company for five months, ending 12 Dec. 1755. In 1756 he was a sergeant in the company, "age 43, cooper, born and resident of Worcester."^9,10 He resided before 1802 at Bridport, VT, with his son, Abel, whom he survived.⁸

On 22 February Asa appeared before Justice of the Peace Lemuel Whitney in Guilford, Vermont to acknowledge a deed of sale, and the Town Clerk, Willard Martin, then entered the deed in the (Guilford, VT) town records. This deed of sale of Asa Rice 2nd's land to his wife Sally's brothers also makes mention of Asa's mother, his brother Daniel and his sister Esther.¹

     The Rice Gen'l Register reports that Asaph was born in Cape Breton, NS. We know that Asaph's father, Beriah Jr, started out in the Annapolis Valley, moved to Dartmouth, and arrived in Cape Breton about 1799. Note that Asaph's sons were recorded in Bridgetown, Annapolis County, in the mid 19th century and that Asaph died there in 1860. It is almost certain that Asaph was one of Beriah Jr's first offspring and that he was born in Annapolis County.

     He was in the military where he fought at the Lexington Alarm, Lake Champlain, Bemis Heights, Saratoga. He was a pensioner.³ He resided at Marlboro; Templeton; Digby, Nova Scotia; and Belfast, Waldo & Lubec, Maine.³
There was indeed an Ashbel Rice who was granted 250 acres in the Hatfield Grant in what is now Digby, Nova Scotia. The Hatfield Grant was issued on January 29, 1801 in order to settle land claims in what was then known as Annapolis County. The land in question had previously been granted under the "Botsford Grant" in 1784 but none of the grantees had fulfilled the conditions of the grant. Therefore property was forfeited to the Crown. The lands in question had been settled by other people who had made improvements and wanted to have legal title to their property. Many of those included as grantees were given their property as a reward for military services to the British Crown during the American Revolution or as compensation because their property in the US had been confiscated because they had remained loyal to England. The "Hatfield Grant" consisted of 91632 acres and was issued to 275 individuals and one Church. The area was designated by the name of the Township of Digby and was still part of the County of Annapolis. As Ashbel fought for the American Colonies, it seems somewhat unlikely that he would have joined the Loyalists in Nova Scotia after the American Revolution. Was it because his brother, Dr Jesse Rice, a Loyalist, was living at Yarmouth, NS or some other place in the vicinity?

     Ashbel Rice was born in 1802 at Maine, according to the 1880 US census.^2,3 He was the son of Ashbel Rice and Persis Knights.² Ashbel Rice was baptized on 16 June 1804 at Little River, NS; according to the Parish Register of Trinity Anglican Church, Digby, NS. It is very likely that Sissiboo and Little River are the same location, near the village of Bear River.⁴ Ashbel Rice married 1st Elizabeth White Eaton, daughter of Henry Moody Eaton and Sarah Philbrick.¹ Ashbel Rice married 2nd Susan (?) on 17 December 1875.¹
     Ashbel Rice and Elizabeth White Eaton appeared on the census of 1860 at Lubec, ME.⁵ Ashbel Rice appeared on the census of 1880 at Lubec, ME; aged 77y.³
