His widow, Margaret released to her son Edmund, on 8 April 1797, the improvement of her thirds in the real estate, excepting one seat of a pew in the meetinghouse for her own person during her life.⁶

     Edmund Rice was born in 1663 at Sudbury, MA, (not found in the published records).^4,2 He was the son of Samuel Rice and Elizabeth King. Edmund Rice married Ruth Parker on 15 November 1692 at Roxbury, MA; (not found in the published records).^1,3,2 Edmund Rice married Hannah Brewer on 23 June 1720 at Sudbury, MA; listed as Edmond of Westborough and Hannah of Sudbury.^5,3,6,7 Edmund Rice died circa September 1726 at Westborough, MA; (not found in the published records).⁵
     He resided after 1692 at Marlborough, MA, in the part that was set off in 1717 as Westborough.⁵ He was one of the original members of the church in 1724 at Westborough, MA.⁵ He left a will on 10 August 1726, proved 12 Sept 1726. The will mentioned wife Hannah, sons Seth ("the eldest now with me"), Eleazer; and daughters Dinah Brigham, Huldah Wheelock, Thankful Rice, Ruth Rice, and Anna Rice. Joshua Rice and friend Caleb Rice Executors, specific Caleb Rice not identified.⁵

     Edmund Rice was born on 27 February 1757 at Westborough, MA.^4,3,2 He was the son of Edmund Rice and Hannah Gassett.³ Edmund Rice married Abigail Muzzy on 30 April 1782 at Hubbardston, MA; (10 April 1792 at Warwick per Ward) Ward reports Edmund was 'then' called of Warwick, but, since Ward has an entirely wrong date for the marriage, this report cannot be taken at face value.^5,1,2 Edmund Rice died on 24 March 1790 at Hubbardston, MA; aged 33y.^5,6,2
     He and Abigail Muzzy resided at Hubbardston, MA.⁶ An inventory of his estate was made on 21 May 1790, Abigail Rice, Administratrix.⁶

     Edmund Rice was born on 22 March 1784 at Charlestown, NH.¹ He was the son of Jedediah Rice and Jemima Hastings.² Edmund Rice married Ellen Durkee, daughter of Andrew Durkee and Phebe (?), on 2 April 1812.¹ Edmund Rice died on 27 May 1829 at Waitsfield, VT.³
     He was a cabinetmaker, merchant, and surveyor.⁴ He immigrated circa 1802 to Waitsfield, VT.⁴

     He was in the military in 1775 in the 8 months service, Russell's Company, Brewer's Regiment, from Sudbury.⁷ He left a will on 9 October 1827, proved 3 December 1841.

     Deacon Edmund Rice was born on 9 December 1653 at Sudbury, MA.^4,5,2,3 He was the son of Deacon Edward Rice and Agnes Bent.      Edmund Rice was a member of the church at Sudbury where he was a Deacon. He represented the Town of Sudbury in the Massachusetts General Court (legislative assembly) in 1707 at Boston, MA.⁸ On 6 June 1710 John Rice surrendered to his brother Edmund Rice, by deed, all his right to land 'by the spring, and on which some part of Deacon Edmund Rice's house then stood'

Thomas Frink, John Balcom Selectmen.⁸ On 14 Nov 1718 Edmund and Joyce Rice convey to their son Jason: "...for love and good will, convey unto our son Jason Rice, all of Sudbury," their homestead, viz: "half the house, half the barn, two-thirds of the meadow land, orchard and pastures."⁶ The inventory of his estate, £451.1.0, was taken by Jonathan Rice, Richard Parks, and Edward Sherman on 19 November 1719. On 24 November 1719, Samuel Abbot and Joyce his wife; Joseph Parmenter and Lydia his wife; and William Rice and Martha his wife "convey all our right to Hon'd father Edmund Rice's estate in Sudbury or elsewhere to our brother, Jason Rice."⁶

     Deacon Edmund Rice was born circa 1594 at England, as reported later in this account of Edmund Rice, no record of his birth or christening has been found.³ He married Thomasine Frost, daughter of Edward Frost and Thomasine Belgrave, on 15 October 1618 at Saint Marys Church, Bury Saint Edmunds, co Suffolk, England.^2,4,5 Deacon Edmund Rice married Mercy (?) on 1 March 1655/56 at Sudbury, MA; (literally 1655) registered as Mary Brigham.^2,6 Deacon Edmund Rice died on 3 May 1663 at Sudbury, MA; (not found in the published records).^3,2 He was buried in May 1663 at Sudbury (Wayland), MA, The Marlborough vital records show that he was buried in Sudbury, but they do not indicate the location any more precisely than that. One possible site of the grave is marked by a monument designed by Arthur Wallace Rice of Boston, MA. It was dedicated by the Edmund Rice Association on 29 August 1914. A boulder with a bronze tablet was also erected by the Association and it marks Edmund's homestead on the Old Connecticut Path in Wayland.^7,2
     He and Thomasine Frost resided in 1627 at Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England.⁸
In 1638 Edmund Rice acquired 4 acres in then Sudbury (now Wayland) and laid out in the fall of that year. He was one of the first to build in the area. According to Massachusetts Colonial Records, Volume 1, page 271, on 4 September 1639 Edmund Rice was one of the committee appointed by the Massachusetts General Court to lay out the land in Sudbury.
Edmund Rice's house was situated on the "Old North Street", near Mill brook. He received his proportion of "Meadowlands", which were divided "to the present inhabitants" under dates of 4 September 1639, 20 April, and 18 November 164-, his share being 42 1/2 acres. He shared in all the division of Uplands and Commons - the total number of acres which fell to his lot, as an original inhabitant, was 247.^9,10

Deacon Edmund Rice was a Selectman in 1639, 1643, 1644 and subsequent years; a Deacon of the church in 1648, and, in 1656, one of the petitioners for a new plantation that became known as Marlborough at Sudbury, MA.^11,12 He was a deputy to the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (the Massachusetts legislature) representing the Town of Sudbury, serving in 1640, 1652, 1653, and 1654.¹³ He was designated a Freeman on 13 May 1640 at Massachusetts.^14,15 He was appointed by the General Court to decide small cases in the town of Sudbury in the years 1641, 1646, and 1648.¹⁶ He resided after 1656 at Marlborough, MA, lived on "The Great Road" on the northerly side of the pond (Cochituate Pond), not far from Williams Tavern. The pond is also spelled Wachittuate, Caochituet, Chochichawicke, Coijchawicke, Catchchauitt, Charchittawick, Katchetuit, Cochichawauke, or Cochichowicke.¹⁷
     Twice in the 20th century nationally recognized research genealogists have attempted to determine the parents and ancestors of Edmund Rice. Mary Lovering Holman described the negative result of her search for records in the parishes near Stanstead and Sudbury, Suffolk County, England in "English Notes on Edmund Rice", The American Genealogist, Volume 10 (1933/34), pp. 133 - 137. Mrs Holman is considered by many to be one of the best research genealogists in the 20th century. In 1997 the Edmund Rice (1638) Association commissioned Dr. Joanna Martin, a nationally recognized research genealogist who lives in Hitcham, Suffolk, England, only a few miles from Stanstead and Sudbury, to search again for records of Edmund Rice's parents. Dr. Martin reported in 1999 that she found no record that identified Edmund's parents or ancestral line.
     Several authors of published works and computer data sets have claimed names for Edmund Rice's parents. Regrettably they have not given sources that would assist in definitive genealogical research. For example, the Ancestral File and International Genealogical Index, two popular computer data sets widely distributed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, offer parent candidates that include: Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, Thomas Rice and Catherine Howard, and Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost.
     From Mrs. Holman's paper we have an excellent record of one Henry Rice's marriage to Elizabeth Frost in November 1605 at Stanstead. Mrs. Holman also documents the baptism of Edmund's first child on 23 August 1619 at Stanstead. If this is the Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost to which the LDS records refer, the LDS records must be erroneous. Our researchers have not been able to find records that support any Henry Rice and Elizabeth Frost, Henry Rice and Margaret Baker, Thomas Rice and Catherine Howard, or Thomas Rice and Elizabeth Frost as parents of Edmund Rice.
     A scholarly investigation by Donald Lines Jacobus, considered by many as the dean of modern American genealogy, appeared in The American Genealogist, volume 11, (1936), pp. 14-21 and was reprinted in the fall of 1968 and the winter of 1998 issues of Newsletter of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Jacobus traced many of the false accounts to the book by Dr. Charles Elmer Rice entitled "By the Name of Rice", privately published by Dr. Rice at Alliance, Ohio in 1911.
     Sudbury, England includes three parishes, two of which do not have complete records for the years near 1594, which is Edmund's most likely birth year. Edmund Rice deposed in a court document on 3 April 1656 that he was about 62 years old. Thus, if he were born in Sudbury his records have been lost and we may never know his origin.
     In his address to the 1999 annual meeting of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association, Gary Boyd Roberts, Senior Researcher, New England Historic Genealogy Society, reviewed all of the genealogical sleuthing on Edmund's parentage. Mr. Roberts is well known for his research on royal lineage. He concluded that there was no evidence whatsoever that supports the published accounts of Edmund Rice's parents and no evidence that Edmund Rice was from a royal lineage.
     The Edmund Rice (1638) Association is very interested in proving the ancestry of Edmund Rice. The association encourages anyone who can identify a primary source that names Edmund and his parents to identify that source. Records of a baptism, estate probate, or land transaction naming Edmund and his parents are the most likely records to contain that proof. Until someone can cite such a record, the association must state emphatically that Edmund Rice's parents and ancestry are not known and that Edmund Rice's descendants can not claim royal ancestry.^18,19,20

     Edward Rice was born on 29 June 1672 at Marlborough, MA.^1,2,4 He was the son of Samuel Rice and Mary Dix. Edward Rice married Lydia Fairbanks, daughter of Eliezer Fairbanks and Martha (?), on 25 May 1702 at Sherborn, MA.^1,2,5 Edward Rice died on 20 July 1741 at Marlborough, MA; (21st per gravestone) aged 68y.^6,7,8 He was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.⁷
     He and Lydia Fairbanks resided at Marlborough, MA.⁶ Edward Rice left a will on 1 July 1741, which was proved 5 Dec 1741. The will mentions wife Lydia; son Gideon; daughters Martha Bannister, Lydia Goodenow, Persis Goodenow, Elizabeth How; and grandsons Simeon Heywood (Howard), William Oakes, and Seth Oakes.⁹

     Edward Rice was born on 3 March 1735 at Brookfield, MA.^2,3 He was the son of Obadiah Rice and Esther Merrick. Marriage banns for Edward Rice and Sarah Cheney were published in November 1763 at Brookfield, MA.^4,5 Marriage banns for Edward Rice and Sarah Cheney were published on 26 November 1763 at Western (Warren), MA; listed as Edward of Brookfield.⁶ Edward Rice died in February 1776 at Brookfield, MA; WARD indicated age of Edward at death as 41 (not found in the published records).⁷
     He and Sarah Cheney resided at Brookfield, MA.⁷ James Convers and Daniel Gilbert became guardians for Cheney, Molly, and Thomas on 6 April 1778, and Capt Tilly Rice for Molly and Thomas in 1787; they discharged him of that trust on 27 April 1790.

     Edward Rice was born on 27 March 1773 at Worcester (Auburn), MA.^3,4 He was the son of Comfort Rice and Martha Morris.² Edward Rice married Miriam Gleason, daughter of Deacon David Gleason and Lydia (?), on 25 May 1795 at Ward (Auburn), MA; (19th per Ward).^5,1
     Edward Rice and Miriam Gleason resided in 1855 at Auburn, MA, on the homestead of his father, his grandfather, and of his great grandfather, On Bogachoag, by the Indians called Pakachoag, a hill once in the south part of Worcester, a portion of which is now within the limits of Auburn.⁶

     Edward Rice was born on 22 February 1783 at Marlborough, MA.^1,2,3 He was the son of Jonah Rice and Phebe (?).¹ Edward Rice married Lydia Gates, daughter of Capt William Gates and Elizabeth Howe, on 6 November 1817 at Marlborough, MA.^4,1,2 Edward Rice died on 12 September 1858.²

     Edward Rice was born at Rutland, MA, (not found in the published records).³ He was the son of Capt. Edward Rice and Rachel Elgit. Edward Rice married Mary Stone, daughter of Nathan Stone and Mary Robbins, on 10 May 1758 at Rutland, MA.^1,2,4
     Edward Rice and Mary Stone resided at Rutland, MA, and lastly at Hubbardston.⁵ Edward Rice was in the military in 1775 served in the American Revolution with Wheeler's Company, Doolittle's Regiment in the 8 months service from Rutland and probably died in 1776. No record is found of his death or the 2nd marriage of his wife.⁵

     Edward Rice was born on 16 March 1784 at Marlborough, MA.^4,5 He was the son of Gershom Rice and Susannah Howe.⁴ Edward Rice married Susanna Felton, daughter of Joel Felton and Susanna Hunt, on 26 November 1809 at Marlborough, MA.^6,1,2,3 Edward Rice died on 19 May 1871 at Marlborough, MA; (20th per state records) aged 87y 2m, from old age.^7,8 He was buried at Brigham Cemetery, Marlborough, MA.⁸

     Capt. Edward Rice was born on 23 December 1689 at Sudbury, MA.^3,2,4 He was the son of John Rice and Tabitha Stone. Capt. Edward Rice married Rachel Elgit on 18 June 1719 at Sudbury, MA.^3,2,5 Capt. Edward Rice died on 27 September 1756 at Rutland, MA; aged 66y.^6,7
     He resided in 1716 at Rutland, MA.⁸ In 1716 Edward Rice had house lots no. 34 and 60 laid out to him at Rutland, MA where he was a proprietor, deed confirmed at the first town meeting held there, 1722, and town offices conferred upon him.⁸ He was in the military in 1724 with Capt Samuel Wright's Company.⁷ His estate was inventoried (house and land appraised at £476.4.8, total £740.12.5), and his son John Rice was named administrator.⁷

     Deacon Edward Rice was born circa 1622, (1619 per Ward).³ He was the son of Deacon Edmund Rice and Thomasine Frost. Deacon Edward Rice was christened on 27 October 1622 at Stanstead, co Suffolk, England; 26th per TAG, 20th per Rice Gen'l Register, under the name Rise. The 1622 baptism record gives the child's name as Edmund, not Edward. Nonetheless, your authors are convinced that Edward was the child baptized (and of course born) that year, and that he exaggerated his age in later life.^2,4,5 He married Agnes Bent, daughter of John Bent and Martha (?), circa 1647.^3,2,6 Deacon Edward Rice died on 15 August 1712 at Marlborough, MA; at about age 93.^3,7
     He received one lot in the Sudbury Two-Mile Grant in 1655.⁸ He resided in 1664 at Marlborough, MA, where he was a Deacon of the church.⁹ He declared age 47 in a paper filed in court on 2 October 1666 at Middlesex County Court, Cambridge, MA.¹⁰ He was assessed 8s 7d in the 1688 Marlborough tax roll.¹¹ On 1 April 1686 at Sudbury, MA, Edward and Agnes Rice gave to their son Edmund Rice of Sudbury, half of the farm lying within the bounds of Sudbury, "near the spring". (Edward had purchased some of this land from his father Edmund and some of the land from his brother Benjamin. John Rice of Sudbury, a brother of Edmund, had the choice half.) Deed recorded 16 August 1734.^3,12 He was elected deacon in 1687.¹³ In the year 1692 he was questioned in court - aged 70y.¹⁴ A 1712 obituary in the Boston News Letter gave the death year as 1711 and said he had been born in Berkhamstead in 1618. It also said he had 142 descendants at that time, of which 119 were living. It further said that Edward's brother Henry, who had died in Framingham in 1711, had a similarly large number of descendants.¹⁵

     Ward favors the identification of this Ruth Rice as WRN 1445, but admits some uncertainty.⁵ He was in the military circa 1776 serving in the Revolution and engaged in several sanguinary battles; in one of which he was wounded in the head, and from his shattered skull thirteen pieces of bone were extracted that are yet preserved as mementoes of his daring courage and of his suffering, and of the righteous cause in which he perilled his life. His revolutionary services, as summed up on the Military Roles, were "42 months, 5 days, in the Light Infantry." There is no monument at Westborough to mark the resting place of this brave man and patriot soldier; his services have been forgotten, the fruits of them are seen and enjoyed. He sleeps, unconscious of neglect and of the harvest reaped from labor in part by him bestowed; of the extent of his country, now teeming with eightfold millions, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, jealous of its rights, and, as in his day, vindicating them with success [WARD p. 232].⁵ He left a will on 7 January 1807, proved 2 July 1811.⁵

     Ephraim Rice was born on 15 April 1665 at Marlborough, MA.^5,2,3,6 He was the son of Thomas Rice and Mary King.⁴ Ephraim Rice married Hannah Livermore, daughter of John Livermore and Hannah (?), on 21 February 1688/89 at Watertown, MA; (22nd per Ward) listed as Ephraim of Sudbury and Hannah of Watertown.^7,8,2,3 Ephraim Rice married Mary Noyes, daughter of Joseph Noyes and Mary Darwell, on 24 March 1724/25 at Sudbury, MA; (literally 1725).^9,8,3 Ephraim Rice died on 25 October 1732 at Sudbury, MA; aged 67y.^10,3,9,11 He was buried at North Cemetery, Wayland, MA.¹¹
     He and Hannah Livermore resided in 1688/89 at Sudbury, MA.⁸ Ephraim Rice was a proprietor of Worcester, having 30 acres of land granted him in that town in 1718. So far as is known, he never resided there.⁸ Ephraim Rice left a will on 20 October 1732, proved 27 Nov 1732. The will mentions wife Mary; sons Ephraim, Thomas, Gershom, and John; the heirs of Josiah, deceased; daughters Mary and Hannah Rice. Son Isaac Rice, Executor.⁸

     Ephraim Rice was born on 13 January 1768 at Rutland, MA.^1,3 He was the son of Henry Rice and Sarah Boynton.²

     Ephraim Rice was born on 18 May 1733 at Sudbury, MA.^3,4 He was the son of Gershom Rice and Elizabeth Battelle. Marriage banns for Ephraim Rice and Mary Battelle were published on 13 October 1756 at Dedham, MA.⁵ Ephraim Rice married Mary Battelle on 14 April 1757 at Sudbury, MA; listed as Ephraim of Sudbury and Mary of Dedham.^2,4,6 Ephraim Rice died on 8 March 1818 at Montague, MA; aged 83y.^7,8,2
     He resided between 1764 and 1766 at Rutland, MA, as noted in the baptism records of his children.⁹ He and Mary Battelle were warned out of town along with their children Dolly and Jonathan (evidently intended as Jeduthan) on 21 August 1764 at Rutland, MA.¹⁰ Ephraim Rice resided in 1783 at Sunderland, MA, along with his sons Jeduthan and Gershom.¹¹

     Ephraim Rice was born on 8 July 1765 at Hubbardston, MA.^1,2,3 He was the son of Ephraim Rice and Mary Battelle.¹ Ephraim Rice was baptized on 2 November 1766 at Templeton, MA.⁴ He died on 18 February 1837; unmarried.^1,2

     Ephraim Rice was born on 10 April 1758 at Petersham, MA.^3,1,2 He was the son of Amos Rice and Martha Hagar.² Ephraim Rice married Hannah French, daughter of Nathaniel French and Elizabeth Frost.^2,1 Ephraim Rice died on 18 January 1851 at Wardsboro, VT.¹

     Ephraim Rice was born on 26 May 1780 at Ashby, MA, (1788 per Ward).^3,1,2 He was the son of Samuel Rice and Hepzibah Flint.¹ Ephraim Rice died on 17 September 1801 at Ashby, MA; (died aged 23 at Boston per Ward).^3,1,2

     Ephraim Rice was born on 28 October 1735 at Brookfield, MA.^3,4 He was the son of Azariah Rice and Hannah Bartlett. Ephraim Rice married 1st Thankful Walker on 14 April 1757 at Brookfield, MA, Ephraim of Brookfield, Mass.^1,2,5 Ephraim Rice married Zerviah Rice on 25 May 1762 at Brookfield, MA.^6,5 Ephraim Rice married Eunice Marks, daughter of Hezekiah Marks and Judith Hayward, on 27 February 1764 at Brookfield, MA.^5,6 Ephraim Rice died in 1810.⁶
     Ward includes a daughter of Ephraim and Thankful Rice with a death record of 5 November 1761. It is clear from the Brookfield vital records that this person is Thankful Walker Rice the wife of Ephraim and not Ephraim's daughter. This is compelling evidence that a daughter Thankful, born c 1760, did not exist. He left a will on 13 December 1796, proved 23 October 1810. The will mentions wife Eunice; sons Levi and Matthias; and daughters Thankful Smith and Zerviah Boyden.⁶

     Ephraim Rice was born on 14 March 1729 at Westborough, MA.^4,1,2,3 He was the son of Perez Rice and Lydia (?). Ephraim Rice died before 1804; presumably, since his son Perez's will mentions his mother but not his father.^2,5
     Note that no marriage or births of children for Ephraim are listed in the vital records of Hardwick or Sutton (or any other Massachusetts town, for that matter). Therefore, we do not show a marriage for Ephraim or a mother for his children. No marriage record has been found. He was in the military between 20 September 1756 and 5 December 1756 serving in the French and Indian War. With his cousin Oliver (son of Charles, his father's brother), he was a member of Capt. Mandell's company which marched from Hardwick, MA to Lake Champlain, probably crossing the Green Mountains in Vermont.^2,6 Ephraim Rice was in a land transaction on 28 February 1761 at Hardwick, MA, selling 100 acres of land to Andrew Haskell. He had previously purchased the land from Aaron Thomas.⁶ He resided in 1765 at Hardwick, MA, listed as a grantee of Town of Somerset, VT (West Dover), but his sons cleared and settled the homestead.² He resided He was among the original 62 proprietors of Somerset, VT, however, he never came to claim his land. Instead he traveled south, taking a heard of horses to South Carolina, and was never heard of again. It was assumed that he had been murdered during that trip. Ephraim's sons, Daniel, Simeon, and Perez went to Somerset, VT, to claim Ephraim's lands there. His son, John, and his family, also moved there.^7,2
