     He resided in the part of Sudbury that is now Wayland, on the easterly side of the road leading from Weston to Saxonville, and on part of the homestead of his grandfather Edmund Rice, not far distant from 'the spring,' near which was the residence of his brother, Deacon Edmund Rice. He was a subscriber for Prince's Chronology, and fond of historical reading.⁸ He was named guardian for five children (not named) of Samuel King, alias Rice on 27 January 1718/19.⁹

     He resided circa 1760 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS.¹ He immigrated to Nova Scotia on the ship Charming Molly with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of the Lequille River. Your authors note that John Rice and Ebenezer Rice's names do not appear on the manifest of the Charming Molly, a manifest that has survived.⁴ He was listed in the township records as surveyor of land in April 1792 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.⁹ He left a will on 4 April 1811 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS,, which was recorded 24 May 1811 naming wife Mary and children Mary Potter the wife of Israel Potter, William, James, Silas, and Thomas.⁷
     The Rice Genealogical Register, 1970, says "John went to Nova Scotia on ship 'Charming Molly' with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of Lequille River." In his 1897 History of the County of Annapolis, W A Calnek provides the passenger manifest the first trip of the Charming Molly. A Beriah Rice, together with Beriah's sons Stephen and Benjamin, are on that manifest; John Rice's name is not. This does not mean that John did not arrive in 1760, only that he was not on the first, recorded trip of the Charming Molly.
In his addendum to Calnek's history, Judge Savary provides a list of petitioners for a Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765. John Rice's name was not on that list.
Back to Calnek's history, John Rice's name appears on the census of 1768 for Annapolis. He has three males and three females in his household, all American. He was enumerated in the 1770 census with six people in his household, two American and four Acadian. We may assume that the four Acadians were his children born in Nova Scotia.
According to Marion B McCormick, 1975: 'He was the ancestor of the greater part of the Annapolis Valley Rice family. He was a friend of Col. Hoar and settled on part of his farm, and during the Colonel's absences from home, he looked after the affairs of his friend. After the Colonel's death, John bought part of the estate, and later passed it on to his son James, who had been born on the farm, and who dies there in 1886.'

     The Rice Family Supplement has mistakenly compressed the two brothers John into one, combining the birth date of one with the life of the other. The first one died as an infant, and so the distinction is quite clear. He was not listed in the 1790 census in Barre. He appeared on the census of 1800 at Barre, MA; (household of 01010-20010).⁶ He appeared on the census of 1810 at Barre, MA; (household of 10010-11010).⁷ He appeared on the census of 1820 at Barre, MA; (household of 010001-10101-01).⁸ He appeared on the census of 1830 at Barre, MA; (household of 000010001-10010001).⁹ He appeared on the census of 1840 at Barre, MA; (household of 0000000001-000000001-0-0001).¹⁰ He appeared on the census of 1850 at Sterling, MA; aged 83y.¹¹ Ward has John Rice married to Abigail Broad. Indeed there is a marriage record for a John Rice and Abigail Broad on 27 May 1784 in Leominster. The marriage is recorded in both the Leominster and Barre vital records. However, this must be a different John Rice.

     There has been some question about the ancestry of John Rice. One John Rice of Hardwick married a Sarah Woods of Greenwich in 1789 (listed as Polly Woods in the marriage record at Petersham). The Hardwick vital records also show the marriage of a John Rice to a Betsey Ruggles in January 1809 and the birth of Betsey Ruggles Rice, daughter of John of Somerset, baptized in December 1809. Perez Rice's will in 1804 refers to 'Brother John's widow', so the John Rice who married Betsey cannot be Ephraim's son and Perez's brother, since the marriage was in 1809, 5 years later than the will.
Mrs. Betsey Rice and Mrs. Peggy Rice are buried in the Mountain View cemetery, close to Daniel and Perez, and Betsey is connected to Hardwick as well as Somerset, VT, so there is probably a close relationship here. The dates are such that the John who married Betsey could be the son of John and Sarah, but no clear evidence supports that theory either.
The family bible of Orrin A. and Melissa M. (Rice) Johnson lists John and Sally Rice as the parents of the children listed here (Clarissa, Anna, Susannah, Perez and Willard), but there are some contradictions too. It gives John's birth year as 1770 (which is possible because the 1762 listed is approximate), but also claims he died June 24 1803 (which meshes with Perez' brother John having died before the will in 1804), but claims he died at the age of 99 years and 11 months (the birth and death dates would have made him 33 years and 11 months)! It also lists an additional child, Shadrack, born in 1805. The choices of the names Perez and Susannah for John & Sally's children give credence to his being Ephraim's son, since these would be names of his siblings. The will of Perez Rice, 1804, mentions 'Perez Rice son to brother John'.
In a letter to Erwin's daughter Mickey Snow, dated August 11, 1995, David Kent Young questioned the ancestry of John Rice. Kent listed his John's wife as Sally Cooper - not Sarah or Polly Woods - and listed the children as Perez, Susannah and Willard, the same as listed in the above family bible. More recently in a note to Lynn McLaughlin on March 18, 2001 Kent said about John Rice: 'He certainly was a son of Ephraim, since his son, Perez, was raised by his uncle Perez.'
In Grains of Rice, the author Peggy Grosser lists her ancestor Willard Rice, who married Bathsheba Kelley, as being the son of John Rice and Sarah Woods, and John as being the son of Ephraim. She lists a Shadrack as being another child of Ephraim mentioned in a deed from 1773.^10,4,2,11,9 He was believed to have been a teacher at Hardwick, MA.⁷ He and Sally Cooper resided at Hardwick, MA.⁷      John Rice's family was living at Somerset, VT, following his death; however, it is not known whether they had moved there prior to or after John's death. Although John could have moved his family to that area in late 1802 or early 1803, then passed away shortly after, it is also possible that his wife and children moved to Somerset after his death to be cared for by John's brother Perez and his wife Chloe.
     Sally did not remarry, but did have another child, Shadrach. Unfortunately Shadrach's father's name is unknown.⁷

     Your authors note that there was another Jonas Rice (WRN 746) in Sudbury, born just two months before this one, but the Sudbury vital records account for the death of only one of these two. Ward assigns the death record to this Jonas and offers the corroborating detail that this Jonas' widow remarried in 1779 (confirmed by the VRs). This seems preferable to the alternate account given by Supplement 2, which reassigns the death to the other Jonas without making any reference to this one. A third possibility is that one of the two died young (not clear which one), and the remaining Jonas married both Mary Stearns and Lucy (Eaton) Moore successively. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the two marriage records and the various birth records make no distinction between a Jonas Sr and a Jonas Jr.

     According to Ward, Jonathan's gravestone gives the age as 80 years, 10 months, 17 days (which happens to be the wrong age), but the gravestone transcription in the Framingham book of vital records shows the age as just 80 years.⁴ He and Anna Belknap resided at Natick, MA.⁷ Jonathan Rice and Anna Belknap were admitted to the church in September 1788 at Framingham, MA.⁹ Jonathan Rice appeared on the census of 1810 at Natick, MA; (household of 00001-02401).¹⁰ He left a will on 19 February 1838, which was proved June 1838. There is no mention of a marriage between Joseph Rice and Martha (Eames) in the Sudbury vital records. On the other hand, the birth records of Joseph's first four children all list the mother as Martha.^5,6,7 Joseph Rice married 3rd Mary Beers, daughter of Capt.      The Brooklyn vital records refer to a niece named Frances who was raised by Joseph and Mary, but they do not say which was the blood relation. The only clue is that Frances was born in Tolland, CT, and therefore more likely an Eldridge.⁵

     Joshua Rice was born on 19 April 1661 at Marlborough, MA, born at Sudbury per Ward.^1,2,4 He was the son of Samuel Rice and Elizabeth King. Joshua Rice married Mary Sawyer, daughter of Thomas Sawyer and Sarah Fairbanks, circa 1690.^5,3,2 Joshua Rice died on 23 June 1734 at Marlborough, MA; aged 73y.^5,6

On the 29th of May, 1741, "at the desire of the guardians of chil. of Zephaniah Rice, deceased, the remaining chil. were cited to court." Estate settled 4 April 1743.
