Jonas Rice was born on 20 May 1747 at Sudbury, MA.2,3 He was the son of William Rice and Mary Estabrook. Lucy Eaton married 2nd Jonas Rice on 5 June 1777 at Sudbury, MA.1,4 He died on 21 June 1778 at Sudbury, MA; from smallpox.5,3
Your authors note that there was another Jonas Rice (WRN 746) in Sudbury, born just two months before this one, but the Sudbury vital records account for the death of only one of these two. Ward assigns the death record to this Jonas and offers the corroborating detail that this Jonas' widow remarried in 1779 (confirmed by the VRs). This seems preferable to the alternate account given by Supplement 2, which reassigns the death to the other Jonas without making any reference to this one. A third possibility is that one of the two died young (not clear which one), and the remaining Jonas married both Mary Stearns and Lucy (Eaton) Moore successively. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the two marriage records and the various birth records make no distinction between a Jonas Sr and a Jonas Jr.

Ebenezer Rice was born on 6 November 1743 at Westborough, MA.4,1,2,3 He was the son of Ebenezer Rice and Anna Rice. Ebenezer Rice married Tabitha Balcom, daughter of Joseph Balcom and Deborah Boice, before 1770. Your author has searched in vain for the marriage of Ebenezer Rice and Tabitha Balcom in Sudbury, MA and surrounding communities and at Annapolis, NS. The Rice Genealogical Register and McCormick 1975 list their marriage year as 1778 which your author considers very unlikely.
The 1770 census for Annapolis lists Ebenezer Jnr (III) Rice with three in his household, two American and one Acadian. We can assume that he and Tabitha Balcom had been married for at least one year and had one child.
Note that Ebenezer Jnr (III) was not listed in the 1768 census but was a signer of the 30 October 1765 petition for the Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis (see Savary, p 105). It is possible that he returned to Massachusetts for a time between 1765 and 1770 and might even have married Tabitha in Massachusetts, so your author doesn't list Nova Scotia as their place of marriage.5,3,2 Ebenezer Rice died in 1795.6
Ebenezer Rice resided after 1760 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS.7,8 He left a will on 2 September 1795 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS,, listing his wife Tabitha and children Jonas, Levy(sic), Ann, and Sarah. This is our first indication that he had a daughter Sarah.6

Sarah Rice was born on 28 February 1753 at Westborough, MA.1,3,2,4 She was the daughter of Ebenezer Rice and Anna Rice. Marriage banns for Sarah Rice and Aaron Hayden were published on 12 May 1777 at Conway, MA; both of Conway.3,2,5
Your authors note that there is an uncertainty in the identity of the Sarah Rice who married Aaron Hayden. There is compelling evidence that this Sarah (WRN 1002) emigrated to Nova Scotia with her parents in 1760, was in her father's household in the 1768 and 1770 census at Annapolis. The Fairn family history in Annapolis County, NS claims this Sarah Rice as their ancestor. Because two of Sarah Rice brothers were living in Conway in the mid 1770s, your authors have followed the line that this Sarah Rice married Aaron Hayden. We are continuing our search for compelling evidence that supports either Aaron Hayden (at Conway) or Benjamin Fairn (at Annapolis).

Nathan Lealand1

Nathan Lealand married Mary Pratt, daughter of Gershom Pratt and Abigail Rice, on 25 January 1804 at Sherborn, MA; listed as Nathan of Holliston. Your authors note that, although the marriage is entered in the Sherborne vital records, the bride is registered as Mary Pratt, not Mary Breck.2,1,3
Nathan Lealand is probably a wrong identification.

Lydia How1,2,3,4

Lydia How married Abraham Howe, son of Abraham Howe Jr and Rachel Rice, on 17 September 1755 at Marlborough, MA; or 30 September according to the church record.5,2,3,4
She kept house for childless widower Zerubbabel Rice (q.v.), who left to her in his will the use of part of his house until she remarry. The will was contested by some of Rice's relatives, who contended undue influence. She then claimed the right of dower as Rice's widow, despite having no proof of a marriage, and the court allowed her claim.1 She was undoubtedly one of the two Lydia Hows born at Marlborough 1731-2.

Paul Hazeltine was born on 20 November 1728 at Sutton, MA, under the name Hasselton.2 He was the son of John Hazelton and Jane Wood. Paul Hazeltine married Mary Rice, daughter of Beriah Rice and Mary Goodenow, on 25 July 1754 at Upton, MA.3,1,4 Paul Hazeltine and Mary Rice were divorced in 1787. From the record of the Superior Court session at Marlborough (MA) on the fifth Tuesday of August, 1786, we learn that on that day Mary Hazelton and Timothy Holbrook were sentenced to receive 25 stripes each. Although the court record does not show their crime, Paul's next action sheds some light on the subject. Paul Hazelton petitioned for divorce from his wife Mary, claiming that "Mary, his present wife for a considerable time hath been so unmindful of her duty to God and to your Petitioner her present husband as wholly to desart (sic) from his Bed and Board and hath lately been often guilty of the sin of adultry with one Timothy Holbrook ...5 "
Paul Hazeltine and Mary Rice resided after 25 July 1754 at Upton, MA.5 In his History of the County of Annapolis, 1897, Calnek lists a Paul Hazeltine who arrived in Annapolis, NS in the late summer of 1760. He possessed two oxen, one cow, and one horse. Unfortunately, the marital status and number of children are not given. Paul Hazeltine/Hazelton's wife, Mary Rice was a daughter of Beriah Rice who is known to have moved to Annapolis, Annapolis, NS in 1760. In his supplement to Calnek's History of the County of Annapolis, Judge Savary provides a copy of the list of grantors of the township of Annapolis, dated 30 October 1765, Paul Hazelton's name appears on that list. By the census of 1768, there was no Paul Haseltine/Hazelton family in Granville or Annapolis. According to Lois L Hupfer of Denver, CO, Paul Hazeltine was first recorded in Townshend, VT in March 1761 where his name was listed on the original charter for the town. In May of 1761 he was charged to settle five rights and have five men at work by 5 June. By 1766 the birth of their daughter, Mary, was the first recorded child born in Townshend, VT. The IGI places of birth for sons John, Thaddeus, Royal, and Paul are undoubtedly in error. It is likely that John and Thaddeus were born in Upton, MA and Royal and Paul were born in Annapolis, NS. However, until their places of birth can be verified from original records, your author lists no place of birth for them.5,6,7 Paul Hazeltine and Mary Rice resided in 1766 at Townshend, VT.5 Paul Hazeltine was administrator of his father's estate between 1777 and 1778 at Uxbridge, MA.5 He resided in 1790 at Tinmouth, VT.8

Sarah Rice was born on 16 August 1751 at Upton, MA.1,2 She was the daughter of Beriah Rice and Mary Goodenow. Sarah Rice married Elias Wheelock, son of Obediah Wheelock and Martha Sumner, circa 1766 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS. In the 1768 census, Elias Wheelock had two males and one female in his household, all American. It seems likely that Elias and Sarah had been married for about two years and the second male was their first son as Sarah Rice's younger brother Joseph was listed separately in the 1768 census. Their first daughter must have been born in or after 1768, not 1766 as given by Ms McCormick. By the 1770 census, Elias had four Americans in his household, most likely Elias, Sarah, and two offspring.3,1 Sarah Rice died after 1821 as she was named in her husband's will.4
The birth order of Sarah's children is uncertain. Your author has attempted some order based on the dates of marriages of children and birth dates of grandchildren where known. Also the census for 1768 & 1770 that suggest that there could be not more than two children born before spring 1770.

Lucy Knapp was a Congregationalist.3 Lucy Knapp and Silas Rice were married 14 February 1773 in Athol, MA. Lucy, in later years, told how, when she went to town to purchase her wedding dress, she had to travel over twenty miles with saddlebags filled with copper coins because England refused the colonies permission to use gold or silver. In this, and many other ways, England irritated the colonists. Lucy used to tell, with glee, of having been invited to a party as a young woman, and having all those ladies present leaving the tea in their cups, not drinking it, and going home when they were served tea, as a protest.11
