     On 14 June 1739 at Westborough, MA, Solomon Rice conveyed to Fairbanks Morse of Narragansett Township No. 2 (Westminster) in consideration of £140, lot No. 58, with present and after divisions, laid, and that may be laid out thereto, containing fifty-three and one half acres, as appears by a plan of said township; which lot he acquired by virtue of title from William Richardson, a proprietor thereof. Justinain Holden and Joseph Miller, witnesses. Holden was of Westminster. The deed was not acknowledged until 20 March 1743/44. Fairbanks Moore moved into that township in 1737, being the first family that moved into that place.⁷ He and Anna Rice resided at Westborough, according to Ward, for a short time after their marriage, but it must have been very short.⁷ Solomon Rice and Anna Rice resided at Hardwick, MA.⁷

     He is said by the Rice Gen'l Register to have lived in Vermont and in Delaware County, NY, but it seems clear that he has been confused with one or more other Solomon Rices.^2,8 The Rice Genealogical Register identifies incorrectly the wife of Solomon Rice as Ruth Maynard, daughter of John and Susanna Maynard. The will of Moses Maynard of Sudbury names his daughter Ruth as wife of Solomon Rice of Stow.⁹ He resided at Vermont.² He resided at Delaware County, NY, likely confused with a Solomon (Royce) Rice, descendant of Robert Royce of Connecticut.^2,8 He appeared on the census of 1850 at Stow, MA; age 72.¹⁰

     Solomon Rice Sr was born on 13 May 1749 at Sudbury, MA.^2,3 He was the son of Matthias Rice and Mary Boyden. Solomon Rice Sr was baptized on 25 June 1749 at First Parish Church, Sudbury, MA.⁴ He married Sarah (?).¹ Solomon Rice Sr died before 21 September 1777; as his wife was described as a widow in the baptismal record of children Lucy and Solomon.⁵
     He was in the military in 1775 in the 8 months' service in Haynes' Company, Brewers' Reg't and thought to have died in early 1777 while in the military service as he was not living in September 1777.⁵

     Sophia Rice was born on 2 March 1789.¹ She was the daughter of Thomas Rice and Rebecca Kingsbury.¹ Sophia Rice married Jonathan Thayer, son of Elijah Thayer and Sarah Robinson, on 12 September 1821; Jonathan of Milford, Sophia of Wiscasset, Maine.²

     Sophia Rice married Lewis Sawtelle; Lewis of Turner, Maine.¹ Sophia Rice was born on 13 September 1808 at Minot, ME.¹ She was the daughter of Dr. Jesse Rice and Sarah Cann.¹

     Stephen Rice was born on 27 December 1792 at Hartland, VT.^2,4 He was the son of Eliakim Rice and Hannah Kendall.³ Stephen Rice married Phoebe Burbank on 22 December 1814 at Hartland, VT.^2,4 Stephen Rice died on 3 February 1871 at Fremont, MN.^5,4
     According to family members, Stephen Rice served in the War of 1812.
Stephen left Vermont sometime before 1850. He appears in the 1850 census, living in or near Lowell, Wisconsin. He and Phoebe moved from Wisconsin sometime before 1870. According to the 1870 Minnesota census Stephen and Phoebe were living in Fremont Township, Winona County, Minnesota, near their son Luther and his family.
His death certificate shows he died of asthma and that he was a mechanic.⁴

     Stephen Rice married Jane DeWolfe; Jane of Liverpool, NS.¹ Stephen Rice was born circa 1765. The Rice General Register has birth years as 1765 and 1785. The Granville Township Book lists no Stephen Rice as son of Judah and Sarah Rice.^2,3,4,1 He was the son of Judah Rice and Sarah Kelley.

Stephen Rice married Ruth Stone on 12 May 1768 at Sutton, MA; both of Sutton.^3,1,2 Stephen Rice married Mary Batcheller on 18 September 1771 at Sutton, MA; Supplement 1 to The Rice Family places some doubt. However, the vital records for the births of Stephen's next two children list Mary as the mother, and the vital records of Sutton confirm the marriage.^6,7,8

     Col. Stephen Rice was born on 15 March 1736/37 at Westborough, MA.^4,5,6 He was the son of Beriah Rice and Mary Goodenow. Col. Stephen Rice married Dorothy Woods, daughter of Deacon James Woods and Hephzibah Eager, on 10 November 1763 at Marlborough, MA.^1,3,7,8 Col. Stephen Rice died on 24 November 1831 at Hardwick, MA; aged 95y.^9,10 He was buried at Central Cemetery, Hardwick, MA.⁹
     He resided between 1760 and 1765 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS. Stephen was a passenger on the 23 May 1760 voyage of the Charming Molly to Annapolis Royal. He was also a petitioner for the Grant of Confirmation of Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765.^11,12 He emigrated on 17 May 1760 from Boston, MA, on the Charming Molly with 45 persons aboard. On board were three Rice men -- Benjamin, Stephen, and Beriah.¹³ He and Dorothy Woods resided at Hardwick, MA.¹⁰ Col. Stephen Rice was a delegate to the conventions of 1774 and 1775, preparatory to the American Revolution.¹⁰ He was a representative from Hardwick between 1775 and 1784.¹⁰ He was in the military after 1776 serving as a Lt. Col. in the Regiment where of Job Cushing was Col. Warner's Brigade, on the Northern frontier.¹⁰ He left a will on 20 April 1821, proved 7 February 1832, wife Dorothy and son Ashbel Executors. The will mentioned wife Dorothy; sons Ashbel, Stephen, and Thomas; daughters Mary Freeman, Hepzibah Rice, Lucy Rice, and Lydia Rice.¹⁰

     Stephen A. Rice was born on 6 August 1811 at Roxbury, VT.³ He was the son of Stephen Rice and Matilda Allen.² Stephen A. Rice married Laura Roberts, daughter of Jesse Roberts and Betsey Ives, on 25 April 1840 at Jefferson County, WI; (29th per Rice Gen'l Register).³ Stephen A. Rice died on 4 February 1902 at Fort Atkinson, WI.⁴ He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Atkinson, WI.²
     Stephen moved to the West via Buffalo and the Great Lakes, landing at Green Bay, Wisconsin. He took a claim in Cook Co. Illinois near Chicago, abandoning it because it was swamp land.
He came to Jefferson County Wisconsin in 1837. In the 1842 census, his family resided in Jefferson Twp., Jefferson Co. The 1850 census for S.A. Rice: Koshkonong Twp., Jefferson Co. age: 38, farmer. The 1860 census for Stephen Rice: Fort Atkinson: age: 48, farmer.
The following is an interview with Stephen A. Rice as it appeared in the Jefferson County Union of 26 ___ 1897: 'People don't half appreciate the great blessing of railways and cheap mail service nowadays. Why, just think of the change since I settled here in 1837. I had to drive up to Aztalan after all my mail then, as we had no post office here. I paid 44 cents for each letter that came from my old home, Warren, Vermont, and postage money was scarce then, too. I couldn't afford to get many letters. Postmasters didn't trouble themselves about delivering a letter that was paid in advance, so I had to write home not to prepay the letters as I might not get them. What a blessing it would have been if pioneers here could have heard from 'down East homes' as quickly and cheaply as the Montana settlers can hear from Wisconsin fathers and mothers now. It took six weeks for a letter to get to Vermont from here and the same time for an answer to get back. I remember a surprise visit I gave to my mother in 1844. I had a title to four fine eighties of land and a wife and two children that she had not even heard about. I rented my farm and we went East. We got to Vergennes, Vt., and had only twenty-four miles over the mountains to go to Warren. I remember the world was coming to and end about that time - it had been postponed once - and all the Vergennes people who could get horses to travel with, had gone to Hines, a few miles away, to the Advent meeting. The Adventists were called Millerites, after Miller, their leader. The liveries were all cleaned out and there seemed no chance at all for me, when the landlord says, 'Why, there's Stephen Bragg. He told me he was going over pretty soon to see his folks. He had a Concord buggy. You had better see him.' I saw him and soon struck a bargain. By the way, he was a brother of Wm. D. Bragg, one of the first settlers of Lake Mills, and he afterward came West and went into business at Cambridge. We got started early. Stephen took my wife and Matilda and the baby in the carriage. I was to walk. Now, I don't mind it at all. I could walk in those days. My two trunks were strapped on behind. No wonder Stephen threw in a chain to make the wheels drag in going down the mountain. Mrs. Rice wasn't used to those grades and I don't think she had as much confidence in Stephen as she had in me. She jumped out of the buggy every time we struck a steep one. You ought to have seen us going down the other side of the mountain. I would run down a piece and brace myself and say 'come on', and down she would slip, slide and run and come bang up against me. Stephen was behind with the wheels chained and they were screeching and moaning as they came down, and the buggy almost straight up in the air. Finally we got there. Mother was so pleased she cried over us, and I remember wishing it wasn't so hard a journey so we could think of coming again soon, and, in fact, wishing we could have come before we did.      The 1804 will of her brother Perez mentions 'sister Susannah Wadkins' children,' possibly, but not necessarily, indicating that she was already dead. In any event, it indicates that she had married a Wadkins or Watkins, but not which one. The Rice Gen'l Register speculates that she was the Susannah who married Stephen Watkins in 1789, but Ward identifies that Susannah as WRN 1456. Ward's scenario is somewhat more plausible, and we follow that here, pending further research.^1,2

Note that the marriage is found in the published vital records of Marlborough and not those of Sudbury, contrary to the assertion in Rice Supplement 2 Part 1. However, the marriage entry came from the county records and gives only one surname between groom and bride. In any case, the 1717 date is inconsistent with the known children born to this couple.^7,2,3,8 Thomas Rice died in 1747; the Boston Gazette claimed Thomas died at age 94. This is presumed to be erroneous, since the same article is demonstrably wrong about the ages of other Rices. However, we have no other, better evidence for his death.^7,9
     Ward asserts that Thomas had a wife Mary who died at Watertown in 1677, but that was really his uncle Joseph's wife. He resided in 1677 at Marlborough, MA.⁷ He and Anna Rice lived in the portion of Marlborough that became Westborough.⁷ He represented the Town of Marlborough for several years in the Massachusetts General Court (legislative assembly) in Boston.⁷ Thomas Rice and Anna Rice resided after 1717 at Westborough, MA, when part of the Town of Marlborough was set off as Westborough.⁷ He was one of the original members of the church at Westborough.⁷

He built the 'Temperance' which sailed with Capt Leonard Troop as Master, Asa Goodwin, mate. The ship was never heard from again.      On 8 August 1704, while the Rices were spreading flax to dry near the house of Timothy's uncle Thomas Rice, a small party of Caughnawaga Mohawks attacked the group, killing Timothy's brother Nahor and capturing Timothy and three other boys. The four captives were carried off to Canada, where Timothy was adopted into the tribe and was given the name Oughtsorangoughton. He had a wife and children there and became the third of six chiefs of the tribe. Timothy visited Westboro in September 1740, using an interpreter as he had lost his mother tongue. He viewed his home and where he was captured, having a clear remembrance. He could not be convinced to remain, and hence returned to Canada.³

(?) resided circa 1775 at Virginia.¹³ Family legend says William and wife, Abigail went to Virginia in 1772 leaving son Isaac and wife with uncle in Sudbury. Isaac later went to Weathersfield, VT.¹²
