Capt Phineas Stevens was born on 20 February 1706/7 at Sudbury, MA, under the name Steevens.1,3,4 He was the son of Deacon Joseph Stevens and Prudence Rice. Capt Phineas Stevens was baptized on 27 April 1707 at First Parish Church, Sudbury, MA.5 He married Elizabeth Stevens, daughter of Simon Stevens, on 18 January 1734 at Rutland, MA.1,6,7 Capt Phineas Stevens died on 6 February 1756 at Chignets, NS; killed by Indians. The Rice Genealogical Register is not quite correct about Phineas' death. Phineas was in command of a group of about 30 men against an attack of about 400 French and Indians in the Cape Breton War. At that time Cape Breton was not part of the Colony of Nova Scotia.1,3,8
Capt Phineas Stevens was captured with his brother Isaac by the Indians and taken prisoner at Rutland. Their brothers, Samuel and Joseph were slain on 14 August 1723. They were take to Canada and detained there for more than a year before their father could procure their redemption, and then at an expense that reduced him to want. On their march Phineas (perhaps 14 years of age) when his little brother Isaac (say 5 years of age) was tired and could walk no further, used to take him on his back and carry him until rested. Phineas settled at No. 4 (Charlestown) NH; Capt, &c, and distinguished himself by his defence of that infant settlement, and otherwise rendered in important services circa 1733.9

Joseph Stevens was born on 24 July 1723 at Rutland, MA.2,3 He was the son of Deacon Joseph Stevens and Prudence Rice. Dinah Rice married 1st Joseph Stevens, daughter of Capt. Moses Rice and Sarah King, on 20 January 1747 at Rutland, MA, the Rutland vital records also records a marriage intention dated 9 May 1747 and questions that the year of marriage may have been 1748.1,2,4 Joseph Stevens died at probably Charlemont, MA.5
The registered birth date may be in error, since it is before his brother Joseph was killed by Indians. This Joseph is called the '2nd Joseph' in Ward p. 93. No date is given by Ward for either Joseph. Also, Ward does not recognize that Joseph's mother Prudence was Prudence Rice. Alternatively, the recorded birth and death could be correct and belong to the first Joseph, meaning that this second Joseph was born later and not recorded.6
