     His farmhouse was northwest of what became Sterling center. The original house stood until 1821, when it was destroyed by fire.⁶ He owned a great deal of land in Lancaster and was known as 'Landlord Ben'. There was a joke about him to the effect that, if there were land in such-and-such a strange place (e.g., the moon), Landlord Ben would have a farm there.⁶
