Luther Rice was born in 1755.5,2 He was the son of Asa Rice and Elizabeth Livermore.4 Marriage banns for Luther Rice and Betsy Beaman were published on 29 July 1786 at Boylston, MA.6,2 Luther Rice married Betsy Beaman, daughter of Major Ezra Beaman and Persis Keyes, in 1786; Betsy of Boylston.1,3 Luther Rice died on 21 November 1818 at Worcester, MA; aged 63y.7,5,2 He was buried at Town Cemetery, West Boylston, MA.7
Supplement 1 and the Rice Gen'l Register mistakenly attribute two children to this family who belong to a different couple also named Luther and Betsy/Elizabeth Rice. In fact, this other couple lived in Boylston from the 1780's to about 1810, thus doubling the confusion, as Betsy Beaman came from that town. Nonetheless, there are sufficient clues to disentangle the two families, including Betsy's will (q.v.) and the Revolutionary War pension claim filed by the other Luther after moving to Maine. The only really confusing aspect is that both families had daughters named Betsy in the year 1786, but only one of the births is recorded in the vital records. Even here, the ambiguity is resolved by the fact that the recorded birth (in Boylston) came before the intention of marriage was even filed for this Luther Rice and Betsy Beaman.5,8 He was in the military in 1775 serving in Wood's Company, Ward's Regiment from Northborough, Mass.5 He and Betsy Beaman resided at West Boylston, Oakham, and lastly at Worcester.5

Betsy Beaman was born on 12 June 1767 at Shrewsbury, MA.6,5,2 She was the daughter of Major Ezra Beaman and Persis Keyes.5 Marriage banns for Betsy Beaman and Luther Rice were published on 29 July 1786 at Boylston, MA.7,2 Betsy Beaman married Luther Rice, son of Asa Rice and Elizabeth Livermore, in 1786; Betsy of Boylston.1,3 Betsy Beaman died on 16 April 1836; aged 69y, under the name Rice.8,5,2 She estate was probated on 7 June 1836.5 She was buried at Town Cemetery, West Boylston, MA.8
Even here, the ambiguity is resolved by the fact that the recorded birth (in Boylston) came before the intention of marriage was even filed for this Luther Rice and Betsy Beaman.5,4 She and Luther Rice resided at West Boylston, Oakham, and lastly at Worcester.5 Betsy Beaman left a will on 30 January 1836, mentioning daughters Betsy Eames and Persis Eames, son-in-law Joseph A. Reed who married daughter Mary B. Rice, other daughters Harriet Nickson, Levinah B. Reed, and Catherine French, and sons Asa Rice and Jabez Rice named as executors.5

Thaddeus Hastings was baptized on 12 October 1746 at Shrewsbury, MA.2,4 He is the son of Nathaniel Hastings and Esther Perry.2,3,4 Thaddeus Hastings married Asenath Rice, daughter of Asa Rice and Elizabeth Livermore, on 13 December 1774 at Northborough, MA; (20th per Ward).5,1 Thaddeus Hastings died on 30 November 1838 at Marlborough, NH.3,4
Thaddeus is said to have settled in Marlboro, NH in 1770 without a family and was the first settler on the farm known, in 1906, as the Hastings place. At the first town meeting of the incorporated town in 1777 he and three others were elected as "fence viewers". (History of Marlboro, NH)
The Military History of Marlboro includes Thaddeus as a Revolutionary War soldier; however his application for pension in 1834 was rejected by the court because he did not serve six months. He did serve in the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in the War of 1812 from 13 September to 7 November 1814 in Capt. J. Tucker's Company, Lt. Col. J. Page's Regiment at Ft. Warren, Boston Harbor.4 He appeared on the census of 1790 at Marlborough, NH.6

Ward notes that this Ruth Rice was possibly the one who married Elisha Rice (WRN 1999). On the other hand, the Supplement states that she married John Rice (WRN 1182). We are tentatively following Ward for now, but further investigation is needed.9,2

Elisha Rice was born on 4 April 1756 at Westborough, MA, listed as Elijah, apparently in error.3,2 He was the son of Joseph Rice and Eunice Harrington.2 Marriage banns for Elisha Rice and Ruth Rice were published on 9 February 1782 at Westborough, MA; listed as Ruth of Northborough.3 Elisha Rice married Ruth Rice, daughter of Solomon Rice and Anna Rice, on 4 April 1782 at Northborough, MA; listed as Elisha of Westborough.4,1 Elisha Rice married Temperance Wyatt on 4 January 1785 at Westborough, MA; both of Westborough.3,5 Elisha Rice died in 1811; without issue.5
Ward favors the identification of this Ruth Rice as WRN 1445, but admits some uncertainty.5 He was in the military circa 1776 serving in the Revolution and engaged in several sanguinary battles; in one of which he was wounded in the head, and from his shattered skull thirteen pieces of bone were extracted that are yet preserved as mementoes of his daring courage and of his suffering, and of the righteous cause in which he perilled his life. His revolutionary services, as summed up on the Military Roles, were "42 months, 5 days, in the Light Infantry." There is no monument at Westborough to mark the resting place of this brave man and patriot soldier; his services have been forgotten, the fruits of them are seen and enjoyed. He sleeps, unconscious of neglect and of the harvest reaped from labor in part by him bestowed; of the extent of his country, now teeming with eightfold millions, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, jealous of its rights, and, as in his day, vindicating them with success [WARD p. 232].5 He left a will on 7 January 1807, proved 2 July 1811.5

Zerviah Rice was born on 16 January 1748 at Hardwick, MA, (or possibly February).3,1 She was the daughter of Oliver Rice and Hannah Bartlet.2 Marriage banns for Zerviah Rice and Abner Marble were published on 1 April 1768 at Petersham, MA; listed as Zerviah of Hardwick.4 Zerviah Rice married Abner Marble on 19 April 1768 at Hardwick, MA; listed as Abner of Petersham. There is some uncertainty about the parents of Zerviah Rice. As the Petersham marriage intention lists Zerviah of Hardwick, we believe this is compelling evidence that her father was Oliver Rice of Hardwick.3,1
