Ebenezer RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Ebenezer RICE [QQ3421, w997] (Ebenezer4, Ebenezer3, Benjamin2, Edmund1) , born 6 Nov 1743 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p84},2 {p130},45 {p15}, son of Ebenezer RICE and Anna RICE. He died in 1795115 {#3949}. He resided after 1760 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS117 {p156},116 {p105}. He made a will 2 Sep 1795 at Annapolis Royal, listing his wife Tabitha and children Jonas, Levy(sic), Ann, and Sarah. This is our first indication that he had a daughter Sarah115 {#3949}.

He married Tabitha BALCOM before 1770, but no record of this marriage has been found in Sudbury, MA, or surrounding communities or in Annapolis, NS. The Rice Genealogical Register and McCormick 1975 both list the marriage year as 1778, but that is very unlikely.

The 1770 census for Annapolis lists Ebenezer Jnr (III) Rice with three in his household, two American and one Acadian. We can assume that he and Tabitha Balcom had been married for at least one year and had one child.

Note that Ebenezer Jnr (III) was not listed in the 1768 census but was a signer of the 30 October 1765 petition for the Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis (see Savary, p 105). It is possible that he returned to Massachusetts for a time between 1765 and 1770, and he might even have married Tabitha in Massachusetts117 {152, 155, 156,469, 470},2 {p130},45 {p15}. She was born before Jul 1742 at Sudbury, MA, but the Sudbury records do not show this birth. Still, the following is convincing evidence of Tabitha's ancestry:

Two Balcom planters, Silas and Samuel, appeared on census lists between 1768 and 1770 at Annapolis.

Silas and Samuel Balcom are known to be sons of Joseph Balcom and Deborah Boice of Sudbury, MA.

A Tabitha Balcom was a daughter of Joseph Balcom and Deborah Boice11, daughter of Joseph BALCOM and Deborah BOICE.

Children of Ebenezer RICE and Tabitha BALCOM:

i
Anna RICE [QQ259347], born before 1771, (1783 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, as indicated by the 1770 census showing her parents with three in the household, two American and one Acadian. It is very likely that she was born in 1769 or early 1770117 {p157},2 {p130}. She died 8 Apr 1827554 {p921}. She was also known as Ann2 {p130}.

She married Michael SPURR 3 Dec 1791 at Saint Lukes Anglican Church, Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS554,2 {p130}. He was born 1 Feb 1756 at Stoughton, MA542 {p80}, died 16 Nov 1840 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS554 {p921}, son of Michael SPURR and Jane SHIPPEY. He made a will 25 Oct 1837 at Clements, which was recorded 09 Dec 1840: LWT of Michael Spurr of Township of Clements, yeoman. Children: William Spurr, Josiah Spurr, Elijah Spurr, Diadama Spurr and Ann Spurr115 {#336}. They were legally separated in 1823554 {p921}.
ii
Sarah RICE [QQ266898].

She married Frederick BALSER 27 Nov 1822 at Saint Lukes Anglican Church, Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, in the presence of Jonas and Levi Rice, by John Millidge, Missionary. Sarah Rice was of the Parish of Annapolis and Frederick Balser was of the Parish of Wilmot429 {37 #109}. He was thinly documented, son of Peter BALSER. It is likely that Frederick was the son of Peter Baltzor and brother of Dorothy who married Sarah's brother Jonas. If so, this was probably the second marriage for Frederick who first married Alice Oliver.117 {p471}
iii
Jonas RICE [QQ259633], born in 1779, (sic) in Nova Scotia2 {130, 225}. He died 1 Dec 1861, aged 79y555. He was buried at Smiths Cove, Digby Co, NS, in Smiths Cove Cemetery56.

He married Dorothy BALSER in 1801 in Nova Scotia2 {130, 225}. She was born in 1782555, died 1 Dec 1861, aged 79y at Smiths Cove, Digby Co, NS555,170, was buried at Smiths Cove, in Smiths Cove Cemetery56, daughter of Peter BALSER and Catherine ZEIGLAR. Jonas RICE and Dorothy BALSER resided about 1805 at Smiths Cove, and was one of the founding members of the Baptist Church there343 {p27}.
iv
Levi RICE [QQ259644], born in 1781 in Nova Scotia2 {130, 225}. Occupation: a farmer at the time of children's baptisms, between 1816 and 1846429 {p23}.

He married Margaret ROBINSON. She was born about 1797556, died 25 Apr 1864, aged 67y556, daughter of John ROBINSON and Maria MARSHALL.

Sarah RICE [QQ3426, w1002] (Ebenezer4, Ebenezer3, Benjamin2, Edmund1) , born 28 Feb 1753 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p84},2 {p130},45 {p15}, daughter of Ebenezer RICE and Anna RICE.

Married Aaron HAYDEN. He was thinly documented. They declared their intention to marry 12 May 1777 at Conway, MA, both of Conway134,2 {p130},45 {p15}. Your authors note that there is an uncertainty in the identity of the Sarah Rice who married Aaron Hayden. There is compelling evidence that this Sarah (WRN 1002) emigrated to Nova Scotia with her parents in 1760, was in her father's household in the 1768 and 1770 census at Annapolis. The Fairn family history in Annapolis County, NS claims this Sarah Rice as their ancestor. Because two of Sarah Rice brothers were living in Conway in the mid 1770s, your authors have followed the line that this Sarah Rice married Aaron Hayden. We are continuing our search for compelling evidence that supports either Aaron Hayden (at Conway) or Benjamin Fairn (at Annapolis).
