Jonas RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Jonas RICE [QQ3412, w979] (William4, Jonathan3, Joseph2, Edmund1) , born 20 May 1747 at Sudbury11,1 {p83}, son of William RICE and Mary ESTABROOK. He died 21 Jun 1778 at Sudbury, from smallpox11,1 {p147}. Your authors note that there was another Jonas Rice (WRN 746) in Sudbury, born just two months before this one, but the Sudbury vital records account for the death of only one of these two. Ward assigns the death record to this Jonas and offers the corroborating detail that this Jonas' widow remarried in 1779 (confirmed by the VRs). This seems preferable to the alternate account given by Supplement 2, which reassigns the death to the other Jonas without making any reference to this one. A third possibility is that one of the two died young (not clear which one), and the remaining Jonas married both Mary Stearns and Lucy (Eaton) Moore successively. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the two marriage records and the various birth records make no distinction between a Jonas Sr and a Jonas Jr.

He married Lucy EATON 5 Jun 1777 at Sudbury (under the name Moore)1 {83, 147},11 {239, 259}. She was born about 1750, as calculated from the gravestone, died 8 Sep 1825, aged 75y (under the name Loring)56, was buried at Cedarville, Washington Co, OH, in Cedarville Cemetery56.

Children of Jonas RICE and Lucy EATON:

i
Jonas RICE [QQ56896], born 24 Dec 1777 at Sudbury, MA11,2 {p129}. Could he be the Jonas who married Lydia Stearns of Weston in 1802? If so, she might be the Lydia Rice who died at Wayland in 1849, aged 70.

In light of the baptism recorded at Grafton, we may suppose the Supplement was wrong about the date of birth. The Rice Gen'l Register escapes from outright impossibility by moving the birth date back two days, but the scenario of setting out immediately after the birth upon a journey to arrive the same day at Grafton stretches credulity too far. One possibility is that this supposed birth date is just an echo of the known baptism.
