Jonas RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Jonas RICE [QQ3011, w746] (John4, Ephraim3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 1 Mar 1746/47 at Sudbury11,1 {p67},14 {p24},177 {p3}, son of John RICE and Thankful. He died 21 Jun 1778 at Sudbury, from smallpox14 {p24},177 {p3},11 {p323}. See the report on Jonas Rice (WRN 979) for some alternative interpretations of this Jonas. Supplement 2, Part 2 to The Rice Family adds to the confusion surrounding Jonas by referring to his mother as Anna Sanderson.177 {p3}

He married Mary STEARNS 13 Feb 1766 at Weston, MA, listed as Jonas of Sudbury and Mary of Weston65 {p124},11,62,1 {67, 122},14 {p24},177 {p3}. She was born 4 Mar 1743/44 at Weston65, daughter of David STEARNS and Bethiah STIMSON. Jonas RICE and Mary STEARNS declared their intention to marry 18 Jan 1766 at Weston, listed as Jones Rice of Sudbury65 {p113}. Ward also ascribes this same marriage to James Rice (WRN 432), but without any supporting evidence.1 {p46}

    Children of Jonas RICE and Mary STEARNS:

i
Ezekiel RICE [QQ181312].
ii
John RICE [QQ58895, w1625], born 29 Apr 1768 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p122},14 {p24},177 {p4}.
iii
Thankful RICE [QQ58896, w1626], born 21 Jan 1770 at Sudbury11,1 {p122},14 {p24},177 {p4}.

She married Elijah STRATTON 15 Mar 1790, (1789 per Supplement 2/Part 2) at Natick, MA76,1 {p122},45 {p49},14 {p24},177 {p4}. He was thinly documented. They resided at Gouldsboro, ME177 {p4}. They resided at Natick, MA1 {p200}.
iv
Mary RICE [QQ58898, w1627], born 18 Nov 1771 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p122},14 {p24},177 {p4}.

She married Samuel JACOBS 22 Jul 1792 at Sudbury, listed as Samuel of Lincoln11,1 {p122},14 {p24}. He was thinly documented.
v
Lydia RICE [QQ58900, w1628], born 12 Nov 1772 at Sudbury11,1 {p122},14 {p25},177 {p4}.
vi
Judith RICE [QQ58901, w1629], born 1 Jul 1774 at Sudbury11,1 {p122},14 {p25},177 {4, 10}. She died 18 Apr 1826 at Framingham, MA (under the name Haynes)16.

She married Joseph HAYNES 31 Jul 1804 at Framingham, both of Natick, transcribed as Lydia Rice in the vital records16,14 {p25},177 {p10}. He was born 12 Feb 1772 at Natick, MA76,14 {p17},177 {p10}, died 26 Feb 1851, aged 68y (sic) at Framingham, MA, from consumption181 {58:60},4 {p584}, son of Charles HAYNES and Elizabeth WINN. Relocated in 1806 to Framingham, having bought 50 acres of the Brimley Farm from John Lowell. Joseph sold the property to Dana Warren (q.v.) and moved to the old Jesse Belknap place (q.v.) later owned by (son-in-law) Elijah Everett Bacon4 {p584}. There is some doubt about his birth and parentage. Temple's History of Framingham asserts that Joseph was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Haynes of Natick, possibly based on the knowledge that Charles Haynes moved to Sudbury shortly after his son Joseph's birth and remained there, while the Joseph who married Judith Rice was "of Natick". However, at least three factors favor the identification made here: the first son of Joseph and Judith was named Charles, there is no record in Natick of any Joseph Haynes besides this one, and Temple's assertion is clearly ruled out by the dates and ages for Daniel and Elizabeth Haynes.4 {p584} They declared their intention to marry 30 Jul 1804 at Natick, MA76.
vii
Absalom RICE [QQ181309], born 27 Aug 1776, (29th per Supp 2 Part 1) at Sudbury, MA14 {p25},177 {p4}. This person may be fictitious. The only documentation appears to be a birth entry in the Sudbury vital records with the year lost. That same entry has also been taken to match another Absalom (WRN 264) with matching parents' names who was baptized in 1709.11
viii
Jonas RICE Jr [QQ181310], born about 1779 at Sudbury / Natick, MA, according to his obituary, (not found in the published records)14 {p25},177 {4, 12},131. He died 24 Mar 1858 at Gouldsboro, ME, at age 77 1/3 years (the Rice family books have the year as 1854)14 {p25},177 {p12},131.

He married Ruth BICKFORD 5 Nov 1807 at Gouldsboro14 {p25},177 {4, 12}. She was born about 1780 in Maine, as calculated from the 1850 census.

He married Martha MORRIS, Comfort of Worcester, Mass. and Martha of Woodstock, Connecticut1 {69, 124},45 {p26}. She was born about 1731, according to her age at death127,1 {p124}, died 14 Jun 1812, aged 81y at Ward (Auburn), MA (under the name Rice)127,1 {124, 205}, was buried at Auburn, MA, in Center Cemetery127. i
Esther RICE [QQ59011, w1672], born 29 Dec 1755 at Worcester (Auburn), MA70,1 {p124},2 {p274},45 {p26}. She died 13 Aug 1848, aged 92y 5m 27d (sic) at Petersham, MA (under the name Gale)123,1 {124, 205},2 {p274}. Congress passed a bill in 1838 to provide pensions to soldiers who served in the American Revolution. Esther Rice Gale, who was a widow by that time, applied to the government for her husband's pension. Following is an exact transcript of this application: "Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Worcester County. On this 19th day of October, 1838, personally appeared before Ira Barton, Esq. Judge of the Court of Probate in the County of Worcester, Esther Gale, a resident in Petersham in said county of Worcester, aged 82 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of congress passed July 7, 1838 entitled 'an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows.'

    "That she is the widow of Daniel Gale, who was a private in the Massachusetts state troops in the war of the Revolution; that the said Daniel Gale performed services as aforesaid in three separate campaigns; in the first, he was in Capt Jonas Hubbard's company, in Col. Timothy Bigelow's regiment, but the names of his officers in the other two she does not recollect; nor does she recollect the length of time he was in the service. She further declares that the said Daniel Gale was placed upon the pension list roll of the Massachusetts agency under the Act of Congress of June 7, 1832 at the rate of $53.33 by the year for services performed by him as a soldier in the war of the Revolution. She refers to the declaration of the said Daniel Gale and the documentary evidence therewith furnished, now in the war office to prove his services.

    "She further declares that she was married to the said Daniel Gale on the 23rd day of October in the year 1778; that her husband, the aforesaid Daniel Gale died on the 12th day of July in the year 1834; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January 1794.

    /s/ Esther X Gale
    "Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year above written before: Ira Barton, Judge of the Court of Probate in the County of Worcester."

    The following is an exact transcript presented to Jared Weed, Justice of the Peace, by Esther Rice Gale's sister, Mary Rice Bancroft.

    "I, Mary Bancroft, of Auburn in the county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, aged 77 years, testify and say that I am the sister of Esther Gale of Petersham in this county; that her maiden name was Esther Rice; that I was present at her marriage with Daniel Gale; that they were married by William Young, Esq., a justice of the peace at my father's house in that part of the town of Worcester, which was afterwards Ward and now Auburn; that the marriage took place in the autumn of 1778 but the day and month I do not recollect. I recollect that it was in the autumn of that year because after their marriage they resided at my father's till the winter of 1780, the year of the great snow when they removed to Warwick. I know it was in the winter or spring of that year because they were delayed some time by reason of the roads being blocked up by snow and I know it was less than two years after the marriage because my sister then had but two children who were twins."

    /s/ Mary Bancroft
    "Worcester, September 5, 1838, when personally appeared before me Mary Bancroft and made oath to the truth of the above affidavit by her subscribed and I certify that the said Mary Bancroft is a person of undoubted truth and veracity. /s/ Jared Weed, Justice of the Peace."417
