iii: Elizabeth BENT [QQ56598], born 25 Mar 1744 at Sudbury^{11,2 {p99}}. There is some dispute over the identification of various Elizabeth Bents. The Bent genealogy asserts that this Elizabeth married Micah Rice (q.v.), while the Rice Genealogical Register has her married to David Stone and assigns a different Elizabeth (daughter of John Bent) as wife of Micah Rice. Indeed, according to the Simon Stone Genealogy, both of these claims are wrong, and it was yet another Elizabeth Bent who married David Stone, namely, the daughter of Micah and Grace (Rice) Bent (q.v.). Pending resolution of this conflict, we are showing two Elizabeths married to two David Stones, but the details of their descendants are given only under the other Elizabeth.^{126 {p257},2 {p99},23 {p26}}

iv: Peter BENT [QQ119256], born 18 Jul 1745 at Sudbury^{11,2 {p99}}. He died about 1778^{71 {p134}}.

He married Lucy STONE. She was born 1 Jan 1742 at Framingham, MA¹⁶, died 27 Jan 1783, aged 40y at Framingham (under the name Bent)¹⁶, was buried at Framingham, in Church Hill Cemetery¹⁶, daughter of Samuel STONE and Rebecca CLARK.
v: Timothy BENT [QQ56599], born 24 Mar 1747 at Sudbury, MA¹¹. He died before 1779^{2 {p99}}.

Israel RICE

i: Grace RICE [QQ5259, w1019], born 27 Feb 1734/35 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p85},2 {p184},45 {p16}}. She died in 1821 at Hebron, ME^{2 {p184}}.

She married Capt Ebenezer DUDLEY. He was born in 1735^{2 {p104}}, son of Benjamin DUDLEY and Elizabeth RICE. He made a will 15 Mar 1786^{2 {p184}}.
ii: Daniel RICE [QQ2961, w1020], born about 1736 at Sudbury, MA, (not found in the published records)^{2 {p227},45 {p34}}. He died 2 Apr 1806, aged about 70 at East Sudbury (Wayland), MA^{62,1 {p150},2 {p227},45 {p34}}.

He married Sarah RICE 28 Nov 1754 at Sudbury, MA^{11,1 {65, 85, 150},2 {p227},45 {p34}}. She was thinly documented. Although Ward reports that Sarah Rice, who married Daniel Rice, was a daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (Smith) Rice, we have a gravestone next to the gravestone of Sarah (Smith) Rice that reads: "Here Lyes Ye Body of Sarah Rice. Daughter of Mr. Nathaniel Rice & Mrs. Sarah Rice: Died Jan. 27th 1740 in Ye 3rd Year of her Age." This inscription gives compelling evidence that Sarah, who was born 3 September 1738, died 27 January 1740/41. Mother Sarah (Smith) Rice predeceased daughter Sarah on 4 January 1741. It is most unlikely that Nathaniel and Sarah Smith Rice would have named a second daughter named Sarah before the first daughter Sarah died. Therefore we must assume that the Sarah Rice who married Daniel Rice was not the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Smith Rice named by Ward.^{1 {p65},22 {61:123}} They resided in several towns and had a large family, of which only two were known to WARD^{1 {p150}}.
iii: Sarah RICE [QQ5260, w1021], born 9 Apr 1737 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p85}}. She died young^{1 {p85}}.
iv: Rebecca RICE [QQ5261, w1022], born 21 Jan 1738/39 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p85}}.

She married Micah HOWARD 6 Jun 1782 at Sudbury^{1 {p85},11 {p220}}. He was thinly documented.
v: David RICE [QQ3037, w1023], born 2 Nov 1741 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p85}}. Only three children are on record at Sudbury, but six had legacies by their grandfather Rice's will - "Joseph, the eldest, and five others."^{1 {p151}}

He married first, Abigail RICE 20 Nov 1766 at Sudbury^{1 {68, 85, 151},11 {p257}}. She was born 13 Apr 1748 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p68}}, died before 1 Jul 1784, as her father's will describes her as deceased^{1 {p68}}, daughter of Isaac RICE and Anna MIXER.

He married second, Ruth GARFIELD 9 Apr 1788 at Waltham, MA, both of East Sudbury (uncertain identification)^{101,62,1 {p151}}. She was thinly documented.
vi: Israel RICE Jr [QQ5263, w1024], born about 1744^{1 {p85}}. He died 22 May 1789 at East Sudbury (Wayland), MA, (not found in the published records)^{1 {p151}}.

Married Mary BACON. She was born 26 Jun 1752 at Natick, MA⁷⁶, daughter of Henry BACON and Mary GAY. Israel RICE Jr and Mary BACON declared their intention to marry 9 May 1772 at Natick, but the banns were forbidden a week later by Mary's father^{76,1 {p151}}.

He married second, Sarah GOODNOW 7 Apr 1774, (WARD indicates the town as Wayland, however, the town of East Sudbury, later renamed Wayland, had not been set off from Sudbury at this time) at Sudbury, MA^{1 {85, 151},45 {p34},11 {p259}}. She was thinly documented.
vii: Henry RICE [QQ5265, w1025], born 14 Apr 1746 at Sudbury^{11,1 {p85}}. He resided before 1797 at Cambridge, MA, where he kept a public house^{1 {p151}}. He resided in 1806 at Barre, MA, where he was an inn-holder, and soon after moved away, leaving no record of children there^{1 {p151}}.

He married Lucinda BROOKS 23 May 1797 at Barre^{97,1 {p151}}. She was born about 1767^{1 {p151}}, died Mar 1804, aged 37y at Barre, (not found in the published records)^{1 {p151}}, daughter of Dr. Ephraim BROOKS.

Grace RICE

i: David BENT [QQ56600], born 18 Mar 1738/39, (literally 1738) at Sudbury^{11,2 {99, 176}}. He died about 1797 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS^{2 {p176},115}. He made a will 3 Dec 1796 at Annapolis, NS, mentioning wife Mary.., children Stephen, Asa, David, Silas, William, Joseph, Sarah Pool, Mary Herrington, and Dorcas Longley; and grandson Beriah Bent, a minor. The estate was settled in 1797 as seen in Estate Folio B11¹¹⁵.

Married Mary FELCH. She was born 9 Feb 1739/40 at Natick, MA⁷⁶, died in 1813^{2 {p84}}, daughter of Ebenezer FELCH and Mary BACON. David BENT and Mary FELCH declared their intention to marry 6 Jun 1761 at Natick, listed as David of Sudbury^{76,2 {99, 176}}. They were enumerated in 1768 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS, with four males and two females, all American born, in the household^{117 {p152}}. They were enumerated in 1770 at Annapolis, with 8 in the household, two American and six Acadian born^{117 {p155}}. Your authors note that the birth years for David and Mary Bent's children, unless cited to an authoritative source, are not reliable.
ii: William BENT [QQ8902], born 8 Jun 1741 at Sudbury, MA^{11,2 {99, 177}}. He died 26 Apr 1829 at East Sudbury (Wayland), MA^{62,2 {p177}}.

He married Abigail BRUCE. She was born 3 May 1754 at Southborough, MA^{55,2 {177, 337}}, died in 1845^{2 {p177}}, daughter of Josiah BRUCE and Bridget PIERCE.
iii: Ann BENT [QQ56602], born 8 Apr 1744 at Sudbury, MA^{11,2 {p100}}.

She married Daniel FELCH 12 May 1763 at Sudbury, listed as Daniel of Natick and Ann of Sudbury^{11,76,2 {84, 100}}. He was born 8 Dec 1734 at Natick, MA^{76,2 {p84}}, son of Ebenezer FELCH and Mary BACON. It is very likely that this is the Daniel Felch family enumerated in the 1768 census with three in his household, two male and one female, and in the 1770 census, five in his household all "American" born, at Annapolis, Nova Scotia, and Daniel Felch on the 1765 request for confirmation for township status and 1792 tax rolls for Annapolis. Daniel and Ann would be siblings of David Bent and Mary Felch who are also in this data set and are documented at Annapolis, Nova Scotia after 1763. Regrettably, the Felch family records for the late 18th century at Annapolis are very incomplete.

She married Jonas HARRINGTON 13 Feb 1766 at Sudbury^{11,65 {p265},2 {p100}}. He was born 21 Sep 1740 at Weston, MA^{65 {p50}}, son of Jonas HARRINGTON and Abigail STEARNS. Jonas HARRINGTON and Jane BENT declared their intention to marry 11 Jan 1766 at Weston, listed as Jonas of Weston and Jane of Sudbury^{65 {p113}}.
vi: Elizabeth BENT [QQ119264], born about 1750 at Sudbury, MA^{126 {p256}}.

She married first, David STONE 17 Oct 1771 at Sudbury^{11,126 {p256},2 {p100}}. He was born 13 May 1747 at Sudbury^{11,126 {143, 256}}, died in 1777^{126 {p256}}, son of David STONE and Mary MOORE. Occupation: a tanner^{126 {p256}}. The identification of his wife is a matter of some dispute. Bartlett's Simon Stone Genealogy, which we are following, describes her as the daughter of Micah and Grace (Rice) Bent, but the Rice Genealogical Register says she was the daughter of Hopestill and Beulah (Rice) Bent (q.v.). It is clear that only one David Stone is at issue, but there are two candidate wives. His estate was inventoried 17 Nov 1777 at £226.9.3, and administration was granted on 24 Feb 1778 to his widow Elizabeth. The probate records mention children Betsey, Aaron, and Ephraim, whose guardian was Caleb Moulton.^{126 {p257},20 {docket 21566}} They resided at Framingham, MA^{126 {p256}}.

She married second, TUCKER, second^{23 {p27},2 {p100}}. He was thinly documented.

She married first, Dr. Benjamin RICE 31 Jan 1774, (1744 per Boston copy) at Sudbury, MA, listed as Benjamin of Boston and Martha of Sudbury^{1 {63, 114},11 {p257},37 {p319}}. He was born 11 May 1749 at Westborough, MA, (born at Annapolis per Ward, in error), (not found in the published records)^{1 {63, 114}}, died in 1782 at Boston, MA^{1 {p114},2 {p100}}, son of Beriah RICE and Mary GOODENOW. Occupation: a physician, after 1773^{1 {p114}}. Removed 17 May 1760 from Boston, on the Charming Molly with 45 persons aboard. On board were three Rice men -- Benjamin, Stephen, and Beriah^{2 {p116}}. He resided between 1760 and 1769 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, and is listed as a petitioner for the Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, 30 October 1765 and living single in the 1768 census for Annapolis. His name does not appear in the 1770 census for Annapolis^{117 {151, 153, 156},116 {p105},1 {p114}}. Graduated in 1773 - Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, attending from 1769^{1 {p114}}. He resided between 1775 and 1782 at Boston, MA^{1 {p114}}.

He married Hannah HOLBROOK 5 Feb 1767 at Sherborn^{77,2 {100, 177}}. She was born 3 Jun 1741 at Sherborn⁷⁷, died 4 Jun 1826, aged 84y at Sherborn (under the name Whitney)⁷⁷, daughter of Nathaniel HOLBROOK and Sarah SANGER. Lt John WHITNEY and Hannah HOLBROOK resided at Sherborn^{2 {p177}}.

He was in the military serving in the Revolutionary War, according to a grave marker¹⁹¹.

Deacon Benjamin WHITNEY

i: James WHITNEY [QQ119278], born 21 Oct 1755 at Sherborn^{77,2 {100, 178}}. He died 30 May 1800, aged 46y^{77,2 {p178}}. He was buried at Sherborn, in West Sherborn Cemetery⁷⁷.

He married Susannah HILL 20 Apr 1780 at Sherborn, listed as Susannah of Holliston^{77,2 {100, 178}}. She was born about Jun 1751, as calculated from her death record, was baptized 15 Jul 1753 at 1st Congregational Church, Holliston, MA⁹⁰, died 25 Sep 1841, aged 90y 3m (under the name Whitney)^{77,2 {p178}}, was buried at Sherborn, MA, in West Sherborn Cemetery⁷⁷, daughter of Isaac HILL and Lydia. The Rice Gen'l Register asserts that Susannah was the widow of James Hill. However, there is no trace of any such James Hill in the vital records of either Holliston or Sherborn, while the records do show a Susannah Hill baptized at Holliston about the right time. We therefore take her maiden name to be Hill after all, until and unless some evidence appears to substantiate the tale of a previous marriage.^{2 {p178}}
ii: Joseph WHITNEY [QQ119280], born 15 Dec 1762 at Sherborn^{77,2 {100, 178}}. He died 5 Apr 1846, aged 83y 3m 20d at Gardner, MA, from palsy¹⁸⁸.

He married Sarah PARKS 3 Oct 1792 at Framingham, MA, listed as Joseph of Sherborne^{16,77,2 {100, 178}}. She died 4 May 1846, aged 73y 4m 12d at Gardner, MA (under the name Whitney), from mortification of the bowels¹⁸⁸, daughter of Gideon PARKS and Hannah FULLER.

Ezra WHITNEY

Ezra WHITNEY [QQ2432, w415] (Martha⁴ RICE, Jonathan³, Henry², Edmund¹) , born 22 Feb 1729/30 at Sherborn, MA^{77,1 {p45},2 {p100},45 {p6}}, son of James WHITNEY and Martha RICE. He died 24 Sep 1804^{2 {p100}}. The Rice Genealogical Register lists Agnes Ross as Ezra's second wife, married 1760, and Elizabeth as his third wife. The Douglas vital records list Mary (Marey) as the mother of all of his children. The second marriage is in error and the third one is unlikely.

He married Mercy MORSE 14 Feb 1754 at Sherborn^{77,2 {p100},45 {p6}}. She was born 2 Mar 1735 at Sherborn⁷⁷, died 23 Sep 1794, (died on birth date per Rice Gen'l Register), aged 58y at Uxbridge, MA (under the name Whitney)^{191,2 {p100}}, daughter of Obadiah MORSE and Mercy WALKER. In most of the birth records for her children in the Douglas vital records, her name has been transcribed as "Marey", but it was undoubtedly intended as "Marcy".

vi: Mercy WHITNEY [QQ119292], born 27 Jan 1768, (1770 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Douglas, transcribed in the published vital records as "Marey" but apparently intended as "Marcy," a typical variant of "Mercy"^{211,2 {101, 178}}. She died 26 Mar 1835, aged 67y at Uxbridge, MA (under the name Read)^{191,2 {p178}}.

She married Capt Samuel READ 10 Jan 1793 at Douglas, MA, listed as Samuel of Uxbridge^{211,2 {101, 178}}. He was born 12 Dec 1769 at Uxbridge, MA^{191,2 {p178}}, died 19 Apr 1839, aged 69y at Uxbridge^{191,2 {p178}}, son of Capt. Samuel READ and Abigail MURDOCK. The birth record for his children (presumably a single, composite record) shows the mother as "Nancy", apparently due to confusion over the first child, who really did have the name Nancy. However, the gravestone of the third child Mary clearly shows the mother as "Marcy".¹⁹¹ Capt Samuel READ and Mercy WHITNEY declared their intention to marry 10 Jun 1792 at Uxbridge, listed as Marcy of Douglas¹⁹¹.

Jonathan RICE

i: Hezekiah RICE [QQ5268, w1028], born 19 Sep 1748 at Framingham^{16,1 {p85},2 {p227},45 {16, 35}}. He died 11 Feb 1832, aged 83y at Rockingham (Saxtons River), VT^{2 {p227},45 {16, 35},184 {67:66},56}. He was buried at Rockingham, VT, in Saxtons River Cemetery⁵⁶. Ward's account of this Hezekiah is thoroughly confused with that of his cousin Hezekiah (WRN 1123). The two Hezekiahs married sisters Abigail and Elizabeth Eames, and Ward has them backwards. Furthermore, Ward ascribes the same military service record to both, and applies the designation "Junior" to the wrong one. The citations to Ward herein have been sorted out to refer to actual events, regardless of Ward's misallocations. Samuel RICE [QQ2448, w425] (Abraham⁴, Jonathan³, Henry², Edmund¹) , born 10 May 1730 at Framingham, MA^{16,1 {p46}}, son of Cornet Abraham RICE and Patience EAMES. He was in the military between 1755 and 1757, in Capt. Williams' Company^{1 {p86}}. He was living 4 Sep 1793, when he made no objection to the settlement of his brother David's estate^{1 {p86}}.

He married Mary BENNETT 10 Apr 1754 at Lancaster, MA^{53 {p85},14 {p44}}. She was born 13 Mar 1733/34 at Lancaster^{53 {61, 76}}, daughter of Joseph BENNETT and Elizabeth. On 3 May 1818 Mary gave a deposition that her son (Luther) had served in the Continental Army during the Revolution. This is one of the rare cases in which a mother's testimony was taken in a Revolutionary War pension claim. Luther was placed on the District of Maine pension rolls, effective 20 April 1818.^{14 {p44}} Samuel RICE and Mary BENNETT declared their intention to marry 12 Feb 1754 at Lancaster, listed as Samuel of Shrewsbury and Mary of Lancaster^{53 {p35}}. They were warned out of town (back to Shrewsbury) along with their children Luther, Lucretia, and Lucy 8 May 1764 at Templeton, MA⁷⁵. He was in the military 1 May 1775, serving as private in the American Revolution for 8 months service^{14 {p44}}. He was in the military 25 Feb 1777, serving an additional three years in the American Revolutionary. He then served from 1 Sept 1781 to 20 June 1783^{14 {p44}}. On 6 September 1810 at Boylston, MA, Luther Rice had 14 acres seized by the sheriff to pay debts awarded against him in court. At this time his son, Curtis, apparently went off on his own.^{14 {p44}} He resided in 1830 at East Andover, ME, as indicated on the 1830 census, they do not appear on the 1840 census^{14 {p45}}.

Married Elizabeth BENNETT. She was born 20 Feb 1753 at Shrewsbury, MA (under the name Bennitt)^{52,14 {p44}}, died 18 May 1830 at Andover, ME^{14 {p44}}, daughter of Josiah BENNETT and Abial. He was in the military 2 Apr 1759, enlisting in Chandler's Company at age 22^{1 {p86}}. Ward reports that Henry Rice is said to have had a second wife at Rutland.^{1 {p87}}

The gravestone of his wife reads, 'Sarah, Relict of Abiah Rice died March 6, 1864 age 97 yr, 5 mo, 14 days.'"^{2 {p230}} He resided after 1780 at Bennington, VT^{1 {p86}}. He was living in 1836 at Bennington, as a pensioner of Revolutionary War^{1 {p86}}.

He was in the military between 1774 and 15 NOV 1777, serving in a company of Minutemen who marched on the Lexington Alarm under Capt. Billings (but arrived late). He fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and then marched to Roxbury, where he was stationed for nine months. His company, under Capt. Miller, marched to Rhode Island and stayed several months in the Newport area. He was discharged at Albany after the Battle of Saratoga.^{219 {2, 24}}. Relocated about 1793 to Oneida County, NY²²⁰. He resided in 1800 at Whitestown, Oneida Co, NY, and was taxed for land valued at $685.00 and personal estate at $10.00²¹⁹. He resided in 1806 at Lenox, Madison Co, NY, postal address Cazenovia²¹⁹. He resided 4 Mar 1831 in Madison County, NY, receiving a pension for his military service^{219 {2, 24}}. He made a sworn statement as to his Revolutionary War service for his pension application 8 Oct 1832 in Madison County²¹⁹.
