She died between 31 Aug 1742 and 1749, (torn year but inferred to be in the 1740s by context, and stated to be 1742 by the Rice Gen'l Register) at Sudbury (under the name Muzzey)2 {p27},11 {p317}.

She married Joseph MUZZEY 24 Mar 1721 at Sudbury1 {p25},2 {p27},45 {p3},11 {p260}. He died 20 Aug 1770 at Sudbury, killed by lightning while in the hay fields, (not found in the published records)1 {p25},2 {p27}.

Nathaniel RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Nathaniel RICE [QQ1558, w228] (Nathaniel3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 9 Sep 1710 at Sudbury11,1 {p25}, son of Nathaniel RICE and Patience BROWN. He died about 18011 {p66}. Administration on his estate was granted 7 Sep 1802, to son Nathaniel Rice. The probate record says "Nathaniel Rice has been dead more than 12 months." Inventory - homestead £60; total £1800; March 3, 18031 {p66}.

He married first, Sarah SMITH 24 Nov 1737 at Sudbury1 {25, 65},11 {260, 269}. She was born about 17191 {p65}, died 4 Jan 1740/41 at Sudbury (under the name Rice), (in her 23rd year per Ward)11 {p323},1 {p65}. They resided in 1738 at Sudbury1 {p65}.

He married second, Elizabeth STONE 23 Feb 1741, (1742 per Ward) at Sudbury11,1 {p65}. She was born 2 Apr 1723 at Sudbury (under the name Ston)11, daughter of Deacon Adams STONE and Sarah WIGHT.

    Children of Nathaniel RICE and Sarah SMITH:

i
Sarah RICE [QQ2954, w713], born 3 Sep 1738 at Sudbury11,1 {p65}. She died 27 Jan 1740/41 at Sudbury11,1 {p65},22 {61:123}. Although Ward reports that Nathaniel and Sarah (Smith) Rice had an unnamed daughter who died in 1741, there is a gravestone next to the gravestone of Sarah (Smith) Rice that reads: "Here Lyes Ye Body of Sarah Rice. Daughter of Mr. Nathaniel Rice & Mrs. Sarah Rice: Died Jan. 27th 1740 in Ye 3rd Year of her Age." This inscription gives compelling evidence that the Sarah, who was born 3 September 1738, died 27 January 1740/41. Mother Sarah (Smith) Rice predeceased daughter Sarah on 4 January 1741. It is most unlikely that Nathaniel and Sarah Smith Rice would have named a second daughter Sarah before the first daughter Sarah died. Therefore we must assume that the Sarah Rice who married Daniel Rice was not the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Smith Rice named by Ward.22 {61:123},1 {p65}

    Children of Nathaniel RICE and Elizabeth STONE:
i
Micah RICE [QQ2955, w714], born 13 Dec 1742 at Sudbury1 {p65},11 {p123}. He died 15 Aug 1812, aged 70y at East Sudbury (Wayland), MA, "non compos mentis"62,1 {p65}. He was insane1 {p65}.
ii
Reuben RICE [QQ2956, w715], born 7 Mar 1744/45 at Sudbury, MA11,1 {p65}. He died young1 {p65}.
iii
Nathaniel RICE [QQ2957, w716], born 27 Oct 1748 at Sudbury11,1 {p66}. He died 10 Nov 1748, (torn entry, but the year is deducible, 8 November per Ward) at Sudbury11,1 {p66}.

Benjamin RICE, b. 1754, MA, d. 1835, MA

He died in 1771 at Sudbury, (not found in the published records)45 {p11}. Administration on his estate was granted 24 Dec 1771, to son Jonas Rice at the request of the widow Thankful. Her thirds were set off 12 March 17731 {p67}.

He married first, Sarah DUNTON 11 Nov 1731 at Weston, MA, both of Sudbury. This same marriage, with the same bride, is also attributed by Ward to another John Rice (WRN 155), evidently in error65 {p28},1 {25, 67},45 {3, 11},11 {190, 259},62. She died 16 Jan 1738/39 at Sudbury, MA (under the name Rice)1 {p67},11 {p323}. There has been some question about the name of John Rice's wife. Hannah RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Hannah RICE [QQ200066, w238] (Ephraim3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 31 Jul 1713 at Sudbury11,1 {p25},45 {p3}, daughter of Ephraim RICE and Hannah LIVERMORE. She died before 20 Feb 178487 {p28}. She made a will 21 Mar 1783 at Sudbury, mentioning her son John Barber's widow Abigail, children of her deceased daughter Abigail Loker, her daughter Hannah Loker, and her sons Samuel, Oliver, Nathan, Ephraim, and Silas Barber22 {27:281}. Her heirs made an agreement in 1786 to dispose of the property she had left them (a house and four acres in Sudbury). The agreement was signed by Ephraim Barber on the one hand and by Nathan, Oliver and Silas Barber, Henry Locar with his wife Hannah, Moses Locar, Benjamin Mills with his wife Sarah, and Jeremiah Smith with his wife Mary.22 {27:281} Although the Sudbury vital records show only one marriage of a Hannah Rice to a John Barber, Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, ascribes that marriage to two different Hannahs of about the same age, daughters of Ephraim and Phineas, respectively. Ward gives the nod to Phineas' daughter. However, Ephraim Rice remained at Sudbury while Phineas Rice moved to Stow when both Hannahs were still teenagers. Compelling evidence that Hannah was the daughter of Ephraim is supplied by a letter written by John Barber on 11 July 1755, while at a military camp, to his wife Hannah in Sudbury (see NEHGR 27:286). In the letter, he reports that Isaac Rice is in the same camp with him and is well. Significantly, the end of the letter indicates it was actually sent (for transmittal to Barber's wife) to Gershom Rice, in Sudbury, New-England. Gershom and Isaac Rice, sons of Ephraim, would have been Hannah's brothers. Therefore, your authors must conclude that the Hannah Rice who married John Barber was Hannah (WRN 238), daughter of Ephraim Rice.22 {27:286}

She married first, John BARBER 20 Oct 1735, (23rd per county records) at Sudbury, listed as John of Medfield1 {25, 43},2 {39, 335},45 {3, 5},11 {166, 258}. He was born 27 Aug 1708 at Medfield, MA87 {p17},51 {p19},124 {p314}, died before 14 Jun 1755125, son of Deacon George BARBOUR and Anna TAYLOR. He resided after 1739 at Sudbury, MA87 {p28}.

She married second, Deacon Adams STONE 26 Jan 1762 at Sudbury11,87 {p28}. He was born about 1690126 {p83}, son of Matthew STONE and Rachel POND. He made a will 1 Jun 1770 at Sudbury, mentioning wife Hannah (in accord with a prenuptial agreement), daughters Bathsheba How and Elizabeth Rice, son Isaac Stone, son Benjamin's daughter Lucy Hemingway, underage grandsons Adam and Benjamin Stone, and grandson Adam How, all living children being the three mentioned above. Executor to be son-in-law Ezekiel How of Sudbury. Witnessed by David How, David Stone Jr, and Joel Stone20 {docket 21535}. His will was proved 30 Jun 1772 in Middlesex County, MA, the will having been accepted by the heirs in a statement signed by Hannah Stone, Nathaniel Rice, and Elizabeth Rice20 {docket 21535}.

She married third, Israel STEVENS before 1 Sep 1770, Israel of Grafton1 {p43},2 {39, 335},87 {p28}. He was thinly documented.

On 23 November 1730, Jotham was granted administration of the estate of his father, as well as those of his two deceased brothers, Daniel and James. It seems clear from this that Jotham was living in the Worcester area either at that time or very soon afterwards.1 {p29} He made a will 23 Dec 1773 at Rutland District (Barre), MA, mentioning wife Mary, daughters Mercy and Prudence, sons Ralph, Daniel, Jotham, James, and Benjamin, daughters Violate Garts, Elizabeth Wilder, Martha Walker, and Mary How, and executors John Mason and son Benjamin1 {p70},20 {49780, 17:253}. His will was proved 23 Dec 1783, (this probate date is not found in Jotham's probate docket and may be merely a garbled copy of the date of the will itself) in Worcester County, MA1 {p70}.

He married Mary EARL. She was born 13 Mar 1708 at Freetown, MA71, died in 1803, aged 97y at Barre, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p70}, daughter of Ralph EARL and Mary CARR. Jotham RICE and Mary EARL resided after 1722 at Newport, RI1 {p70}. The birth order of Jotham and Mary's children is uncertain. They resided about 1734 at Worcester, MA, but the Worcester vital records do not report the births of any of Jotham's children1 {p70}. They relocated before 1749 to Rutland (Barre), MA1 {p70}.

She married WILDER before 1773, Wilder of Petersham. Elizabeth was married when her father made his will1 {p70}. He was born about 1752 at Petersham, MA. Cornelius did indeed have a wife named Elizabeth, but not until 1776, and her name in the marriage intention was Elizabeth Hastings.
