Nathan RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Nathan RICE [QQ3052, w769] (Abishai4, Gershom3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 26 Sep 1726 at Worcester, MA70,1 {p69},2 {p118},45 {p12}, son of Abishai RICE and Frances RICE. He died in 17572 {p118}.

He married Mehitable BALDWIN 23 Apr 1751 at Leicester, MA, both of Leicester1 {p69},2 {p118},45 {p12},113 {p197},112. She was born 28 Nov 1725 at Charlestown, MA69 {p288},418 {p50}, daughter of James BALDWIN and Mary STOVER.

    Children of Nathan RICE and Mehitable BALDWIN:

i
Jemima RICE [QQ119824], born 9 Mar 1752 at Leicester (Spencer), MA112,2 {118, 205}. She died 19 Apr 1838, (18th per gravestone), aged 86y at Leicester, MA (under the name Lamb)113,112. She was buried at Spencer, MA, in Old Cemetery112.

She married David LAMB 6 Nov 1773 at Spencer112,2 {118, 205}. He was born 14 Dec 1739 at Leicester, MA113, died 26 Apr 1814, aged 74y at Leicester113,112, was buried at Spencer, MA, in Old Cemetery112, son of Jonathan LAMB and Elizabeth RICHARDSON.
ii
Mehitable RICE [QQ119826], born 27 Mar 1754 at Spencer112,2 {p118}. There is some confusion between the two nearly contemporary Mehitabel Rices of Worcester County, one (WRN 1487) the daughter of Jedediah and Mehitabel (Cutter) Rice, and the other (not mentioned by Ward) the daughter of Nathan and Mehitabel (Baldwin) Rice. Ward states that the first of these was the bride of Rand White of Spencer, while the Rice Gen'l Register assigns that role to the second one. The available evidence is not compelling for either one. For example, the death record of the widowed Mehitabel (Rice) White gives an estimated birth in 1752, while the two candidates were born, respectively in 1750 and 1754. Still, the relative rarity of the name Mehitabel suggests that one or the other is likely to be the bride. For want of better evidence, we are following Ward. For the descendants of Rand and Mehitabel, see the other (WRN 1487).1 {p112},2 {p118}
iii
Phebe RICE [QQ119828], born 17 Mar 1756 at Spencer112,2 {118, 205}. She died 1 Aug 1829, (1828 per Rice Gen'l Register), aged 73y at Hubbardston, MA (under the name Warren)247,2 {p205}. She was buried at Hubbardston, in Center (Parish) Cemetery247.

She married first, Samuel GARFIELD Jr 4 Oct 1774 at Spencer, MA112,2 {118, 205}. He was baptized 29 Nov 1747 at Leicester (Spencer), MA112, died 25 Dec 1775, aged 29y at Spencer, MA112,2 {p205}, was buried at Spencer, in Old Cemetery112, son of Benjamin GARFIELD and Abigail HERINGTON.

She married second, Ebenezer WARREN 30 Mar 1780 at Spencer, listed as Ebenezer of Leicester112,2 {118, 205}. He was born 9 Jun 1754 at Leicester, MA113, died 17 Sep 1819, aged 65y at Hubbardston, MA247,2 {p205}, son of Ebenezer WARREN and Lydia HARRINGTON.

John RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

John RICE [QQ3063, w777] (Matthias4, Gershom3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 17 Dec 1738, (literally 1738-9 per vital records, but 1739 per Ward, and shown as December 26th per Supplement) at Worcester, MA70,1 {p70},2 {p119},45 {p12}, son of Matthias RICE and Mary BOYDEN. He died 2 May 1811 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS115 {#3958, estate folio R18},226 {p1},2 {p119}. Relocated to Nova Scotia, on the ship Charming Molly with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of the Lequille River. Your authors note that John Rice and Ebenezer Rice's names do not appear on the manifest of the Charming Molly, a manifest that has survived2 {p119}. The Rice Genealogical Register, 1970, says "John went to Nova Scotia on ship 'Charming Molly' with Beriah Rice and Ebenezer Rice Jr. He settled on the west side of Lequille River." In his 1897 History of the County of Annapolis, W A Calnek provides the passenger manifest the first trip of the Charming Molly. A Beriah Rice, together with Beriah's sons Stephen and Benjamin, are on that manifest; John Rice's name is not. This does not mean that John did not arrive in 1760, only that he was not on the first, recorded trip of the Charming Molly.

    In his addendum to Calnek's history, Judge Savary provides a list of petitioners for a Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765. John Rice's name was not on that list.

    Back to Calnek's history, John Rice's name appears on the census of 1768 for Annapolis. He has three males and three females in his household, all American. He was enumerated in the 1770 census with six people in his household, two American and four Acadian. We may assume that the four Acadians were his children born in Nova Scotia.

    According to Marion B McCormick, 1975: "He was the ancestor of the greater part of the Annapolis Valley Rice family. He was a friend of Col. Hoar and settled on part of his farm, and during the Colonel's absences from home, he looked after the affairs of his friend. After the Colonel's death, John bought part of the estate, and later passed it on to his son James, who had been born on the farm, and who dies there in 1886." He resided about 1760 at Annapolis, Annapolis Co, NS1 {p70}. He was listed in the township records as surveyor of land Apr 1792 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS117 {p175}. He made a will 4 Apr 1811 at Annapolis Royal, which was recorded 24 May 1811 naming wife Mary and children Mary Potter the wife of Israel Potter, William, James, Silas, and Thomas115 {#3958, estate folio R18}.

He married first, Sarah SMITH 7 May 1761, (6th per Rice Gen'l Register) at Sudbury, MA11,2 {p119},45 {p12}. She was born 22 Apr 1743 at Sudbury11,2 {p76}, died 29 Apr 17842 {p119}, daughter of Zephaniah SMITH and Abigail WHEELER.

He married second, Mary POTTER 21 Apr 17852 {p119},45 {p12}. She was baptized 23 Mar 1766 at 1st Church, Worcester, MA70, daughter of Joseph POTTER and Zebudah HAYDEN.

iv
Mary RICE [QQ260768], born before 1768, (1765 per McCormick, 1769 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Annapolis Royal, as the 1768 census for Annapolis lists 3 males and 3 females in John Rice's household. This suggests that either Mary or some otherwise unaccounted-for daughter was born before the census was taken342 {p588},2 {119, 206}. She died 7 Mar 1849, aged 81y at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS170,427,56. She was buried at Upper Clements, Annapolis Co, NS, in Goat Island Baptist Church Cemetery56,427.

He was in the military in 1780, in a company of "six month men" with the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment, Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War427. He made a will 21 Jul 1843, which was recorded 03 Sep 1847: LWT of Israel Potter of Clements, yeoman, dated 21 Jul 1843. Wife: Mary. Children: Aaron, Israel, James, Josiah, Jacob, John, Isaiah, Fanny, Mary Balcomb, Sarah Spurr, Susannah Walkeys (sic), Anna Cogswell, Zebudah Spurr deceased, Zeuriah Hurd deceased and Joseph Potter deceased. They resided between 1794 and 1838 at Clements, Annapolis Co, NS, listed in the 1794 Poll Tax for Clements for one shilling, and in the 1827 census with three boys and four girls, as a farmer, and a Baptist. In the 1838 census just Israel and his wife Mary were at home427.
v
Joseph RICE [QQ260769], born in 1771 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS2 {p119}. He died in 17842 {p119}.
vi
William RICE [QQ260770], born in 1774 at Annapolis Royal342 {p589},2 {119, 206}. He died 27 Nov 1833 at Bear River, Annapolis Co, NS, or at Clements: the Rice Gen'l Register says the family resided on the east side of Bear River, NS, while the Chute genealogy says that they resided in Clements, on the east side of Bear River427.

He married Anna HARDY 25 Oct 1795 at All Saints Anglican Church, Granville, Annapolis Co, NS2 {119, 206},317. She died 11 Oct 1845 at Bear River, Annapolis Co, NS2 {p206}, daughter of Aaron HARDY and Eunice GASKILL.

He erected a mill at the Head of the Tide, Bear River, after having lived first in Clements, and in Smith's Cove in 1808. He was the first settler at the Head of the Tide, and built the first bridge across the River there. In addition to his Mill on the West Branch, he built vessels, made brick, burned lime. He built the "Temperance" which sailed with Capt Leonard Troop as Master, Asa Goodwin, mate. The ship was never heard from again. He owned a great deal of land, much of it still in the possession of his descendants.342 {p590}

He married Martha POTTER before 1799, as she was listed as Martha Rice wife of Thomas Rice in the probate record for her father's estate, dated 15 April 17992 {119, 207},115 {#3892, estate folio P7}. He married Ruth MAYNARD 18 Jul 1797 at Sudbury, MA1 {p126},2 {p277},432 {p6},11 {234, 261}. She was born 11 Sep 1770 at Sudbury11, died 19 Jan 1848, aged 77y (under the name Rice), from dropsy, listed unnamed as the wife of Solomon38, daughter of Moses MAYNARD and Sybilla WILLIS. She resided in 1819 at Stow, MA, according to her father's probate record20 {docket 14880}. The Rice Genealogical Register identifies incorrectly the wife of Solomon Rice as Ruth Maynard, daughter of John and Susanna Maynard. The will of Moses Maynard of Sudbury names his daughter Ruth as wife of Solomon Rice of Stow.20 {docket 14880}

Your authors note that the age at death reported by Ward and the implied birth around 1776 are inconsistent with the recorded marriage of Phineas Gates to Rebecca WAIT (sic), but the 1768 baptism of Rebecca WARD fits. By the same token, Rebecca's father Uriah Ward had a different child baptized in 1776. Further research is needed to establish with certainty the sequence of events. Ralph RICE [QQ3081, w788] (Jotham4, James3, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born about 1734 at Worcester, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p70}, son of Jotham RICE and Mary EARL. He was not listed in the 1790 or 1800 census in MA.

They declared their intention to marry 20 Nov 1794 at Leominster, MA, listed as Ralph of Barre and Mary Buss224.

    Children of Ralph RICE and Sarah SAWYER:

He was born 8 Sep 1750 at Shrewsbury, MA (under the name Hemmenway)52,1 {127, 217}, son of Daniel HEMENWAY and Ruth BIGELOW. Asa HEMENWAY and Rebecca RICE resided in 1788 at Bridport, VT, on land given to him by his father1 {p128}.
iv
John RICE [QQ320428], born 20 Jan 1758 at Rutland District (Barre), MA97. He died 18 Mar 1758 at Rutland District (Barre)97. He was buried at Barre, MA97.
v
Abel RICE [QQ59124, w1731], born 16 Jan 1760, (birth not recorded in Barre)1 {p128},2 {p278}, enumerated in 1790, (household of 100--) at Barre312. He died in 1837 in Pennsylvania1 {p207},2 {p278},45 {p51}. As noted by WARD:
    " Allen Rice & Co., in 1831, began manufacturing salt in Sergeant Township, McKean Co., Pennsylvania.

    In September 1782, 100 picked warriors from a party of 300, made an assault on Rice's fort, situated on Buffalo Creek, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, about 12 miles from its junction with the Ohio River, which had only six men to defend it, two of whom were Daniel Rice and Abraham Rice. The fire of the Indians was briskly returned; at intervals they called out to the defenders of the fort, "Give Up, give up -- too many Indian -- Indian too big -- no kill".

    They were answered with defiance, "Come on, you cowards, we are ready for you. Show us your yellow hides and we will make holes in them for you". After four hours of fighting the Indians withdrew, carrying off their dead and wounded, and shooting the horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, till the place was strewed with their dead bodies. Abraham Rice was wounded in the arm and thigh, but had no bones broken; only one man of the six was killed. For their personal bravery and successful defence of that fort, in which were many women and children, "the names of this Spartan band have been enrolled on the list of heroes of our early times". [Historical Collections of Pennsylvania, by Sherman Day, p. 662]

    We have reason to suppose that Daniel Rice and Abraham Rice were descendants of Edmund Rice."

    Your authors note that the Rice Fort was documented to exist by Major George Washington who led the Virginia militia into Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. Y-DNA analysis has shown that there were many different Rice families in colonial America. Therefore, it is very unlikely that Daniel and Abraham Rice were Edmund Rice descendants.1 {p207}

He married Anna JONES 11 Aug 1791 at Hubbardston, MA, listed as Anna of New Braintree247,1 {128, 207},2 {p278}. She was born 20 Jul 17691 {p207}, died in Pennsylvania2 {p278}. She was living 23 Jun 1855 at Harford, Susquehanna Co, PA, per a letter from their son Amos1 {p207}. They resided after 1791 at Barre, MA, for a few years1 {p207}. They relocated about 1795 to Hubbardston, MA1 {p207}. They resided about 1824 in Pennsylvania1 {p207}. A letter from their son Amos mentioned that he had six brothers and 4 sisters but does not mention their names.1 {p207}
vi
Damaris RICE [QQ59113, w1728], born in 1761 at Rutland District (Barre), MA, (not found in the published records). She died 11 Feb 1841, aged 79y at Sterling, MA (under the name Stuart)56,20 {p56079}. She was buried at Sterling, in Chocksett Cemetery56. Her identification as the daughter of Ralph Rice is based on circumstantial evidence. In particular, she named one of her sons Ralph Rice Stuart. However, that happened after Ralph Rice had already married her husband's widowed mother, and so an alternate interpretation is possible. Another piece of evidence is the fact that John Rice (WRN 1732), a son of Ralph, was living with the Stuarts at the time of the 1850 census. Again, this fact is suggestive but not conclusive, since John could instead have lived with one of his own children. Finally, Abel Rice (WRN 1731), who is believed to be another son of Ralph, named one of his daughters Damaris. She was evidently living with her son Benjamin in 1840, according to the census tallies. to her son Benjamin Stuart20 {docket 56079, 238:146}

She married Benjamin STUART 8 Feb 1787 at Barre, MA, listed as Benjamin of Leominster and Damaris of Barre97,224,1 {p127},45 {p27}. He was born about 1757 at Lancaster, MA, (not found in the published records), died 4 Jun 1820, aged 63y at Sterling, MA187,56, was buried at Sterling, in Chocksett Cemetery56, son of Joseph STEWART and Mary SNOW. Occupation: a farmer and cooper. He was a charter member of the Princeton Baptist Society, founded 1817.185
vii
John RICE [QQ59126, w1732], born about 1766 at probably Rutland District (Barre), MA, as calculated from census and death records, (not found in the published records). He died 13 Oct 1852, (married, born in Barre, son of Ralph Rice), aged 87y at Sterling, MA, from dropsy181 {68:151},45 {p51}. The Rice Family Supplement has mistakenly compressed the two brothers John into one, combining the birth date of one with the life of the other. The first one died as an infant, and so the distinction is quite clear. He was not listed in the 1790 census in Barre.

He married Abigail BROAD 2 Jul 1797 at Barre, MA97,1 {128, 207},45 {27, 51}. She was born about 20 Sep 1772 at Barre, as calculated from the death record, died 30 Aug 1868, aged 95y 11m 10d at Sterling, MA (under the name Rice), from old age181 {213:312.20},45 {p51}.
