This Joseph is called the "2nd Joseph" in Ward p. 93. No date is given by Ward for either Joseph. Also, Ward does not recognize that Joseph's mother Prudence was Prudence Rice. Alternatively, the recorded birth and death could be correct and belong to the first Joseph, meaning that this second Joseph was born later and not recorded.1 {92, 93}

He married Dinah RICE 20 Jan 1747/48, (literally 1747) at Rutland, MA1 {51, 93},2 {p24},98 {p185}. Aaron RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Aaron RICE [QQ2579, w498] (Moses4, John3, Edward2, Edmund1) , born 31 Jan 1724/25 at Worcester, MA70,1 {p51}, son of Capt. Moses RICE and Sarah KING. He died 2 Oct 1808 at Deerfield, MA104,1 {p93}. He was buried at Charlemont, MA, in Station Cemetery104. He was in the military in 1758, as a corporal in Burke's Company1 {p93}. He was a member of the State Convention to frame a Constitution for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at Charlemont1 {p93}. He was a deacon of the church at Charlemont1 {p93}.

He married Freedom FRENCH 5 Nov 1754 at Deerfield, MA, listed as Aaron of Charlemont271,104,1 {51, 93},45 {p19}. She was born 22 Apr 1730 at Deerfield271,1 {p93}, died 15 Sep 1809, aged 79y (under the name Rice)104,1 {p93}, was buried at Charlemont, MA, in Station Cemetery104, daughter of Thomas FRENCH and Joanna FIELD. Aaron RICE and Freedom FRENCH resided at Charlemont1 {p93}. They were admitted to the church Sep 1756 at Deerfield, MA1 {p93}. From the following inscription upon the gravestone of the parents at Charlemont, MA, of which the following is a copy, it appears they had one more child than we have an account of.

    "Sacred to the memory of Deacon Aaron Rice and Freedom, his wife; who having sustained the hardships of an infant frontier settlement in time of war; having reared a family of eleven children, six of whom lie interred in this ground; and lived together in happy wedlock fifty-four years, departed this life, the first Dec. 2, 1808, aged 84 years; the other, Sept. 15, 1809, aged 79 years."1 {p93}

    Children of Aaron RICE and Freedom FRENCH:

i
Sarah RICE [QQ23369, w1181], born 16 Aug 1756 at Charlemont, MA104,1 {p93}. She died 7 Dec 1758 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}.
ii
John RICE [QQ23273, w1182], born 2 Feb 1758 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}. He died 18 May 1829 at Charlemont, recorded as John Rice, husband of Ruth104,1 {p163}.

He married Ruth RICE 6 Mar 1782 at Hardwick, MA, listed as John of Charlemont1 {112, 163},45 {22, 39},114 {p230}. She died 12 Sep 1820, aged 62y at Charlemont, MA, (not found in the published records)1 {p163}. Ruth's identity is uncertain. Two candidates have been proposed: (1) Ruth (WRN 1485) daughter of Phineas and (2) Ruth (WRN 1445) daughter of Solomon. The two were born within a year of each other, and both families lived for a time in Hardwick, where John's bride lived in 1782. However, the family of #1 (Ward's candidate) nearly all were of Rutland by the 1780's, and, indeed, Phineas had evidently moved away from Hardwick about 1756, before #1 was even born. By the same token, the family of #2 (the Supplement's candidate) nearly all lived in Hardwick. Ward nonetheless found reason to believe that #2 had moved to Northborough by 1782 and there married Elisha Rice (WRN 1999). That may of course be true, but the elimination of #2 would not necessarily mean that #1 was the one. Further investigation is needed. For example, note that the death record of her husband John implies, but does not explicitly say, that she was living in 1829, even though Ward claims she died in 1820. The published vital records of Charlemont do not show her death, but the records from 1850 onward were not included. They resided at Charlemont1 {p163}.
iii
Sarah RICE [QQ23370, w1183], born 14 Nov 1759 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}. She died 18 Apr 1783, (16th per Ward) at Charlemont104,1 {p93}.
iv
Anna RICE [QQ23371, w1184], born 10 Jul 1761 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}. She died 9 Dec 1783 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}.
v
Eunice RICE [QQ23372, w1185], born 24 Jul 1763 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}. She died 6 Dec 1782 at Charlemont104,1 {p93}.

Note that the birth records of her children at Charlemont show her name as Lora, but her own birth record shows Lonia. Aaron RICE and Lona THOMPSON resided at Brecksville1 {p164}.
vii
Joseph RICE [QQ23373, w1187], born 8 Dec 1767 at Charlemont, MA104,1 {p93}. He died in 1812, (1802 per Ward, but Ward also gives the age at death as 55, which implies the later date) in Ohio1 {p164}.

He married Emblem COMSTOCK in 1788, Joseph of Charlemont, Emblem of New London, Connecticut1 {93, 164}. She was born 25 Jul 1769 at New London, CT43 {3:75}, died in 1825 in Ohio1 {p164}, daughter of Peter COMSTOCK and Elizabeth FITCH. Joseph RICE and Emblem COMSTOCK resided in Ohio1 {p164}.

Dinah RICE [QQ2580, w499] (Moses4, John3, Edward2, Edmund1) , born 2 Jan 1726/27, (21st per Ward) at Worcester, MA70,1 {51, 93}, daughter of Capt. Moses RICE and Sarah KING. She died 6 Sep 1818 at Charlemont, MA (under the name Rice)104,1 {p93}. Dinah was admitted to the church at Deerfield on 25 December 1757.1 {p93}

She married first, Joseph STEVENS 20 Jan 1747/48, (literally 1747) at Rutland, MA1 {51, 93},2 {p24},98 {p185}. He was born 24 Jul 1723 at Rutland2 {p24},98 {p92}, died at probably Charlemont, MA1 {p93}, son of Deacon Joseph STEVENS and Prudence RICE. The registered birth date may be in error, since it is before his brother Joseph was killed by Indians. This Joseph is called the "2nd Joseph" in Ward p. 93. No date is given by Ward for either Joseph. Also, Ward does not recognize that Joseph's mother Prudence was Prudence Rice. Alternatively, the recorded birth and death could be correct and belong to the first Joseph, meaning that this second Joseph was born later and not recorded.1 {92, 93} Joseph STEVENS and Dinah RICE declared their intention to marry 9 May 1747 at Rutland, MA98.

She married second, Paul RICE 16 May 1764 at Deerfield, MA (under the name Stearns), both of Charlemont271,1 {p93}. He was thinly documented.

    Children of Dinah RICE and Joseph STEVENS are shown under Joseph STEVENS.
