Eunice BRIGHAM

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Eunice BRIGHAM [QQ2068, w1005] (Dinah4 RICE, Edmund3, Samuel2, Edmund1) , born 4 Oct 1721 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p84},45 {p16},46 {1:76}, daughter of Nathan BRIGHAM and Dinah RICE.

She married Hezekiah NEWTON 8 Sep 1742 at Southborough, MA45 {p16},55 {p127}. He was born 28 Jul 1719 at Marlborough, MA3, died 4 Feb 1786, aged 66y at Paxton, MA178,250, was buried at Paxton, in Paxton Cemetery250, son of Isaac NEWTON and Sarah BELKNAP.

Children of Eunice BRIGHAM and Hezekiah NEWTON:

i
Persis NEWTON [QQ289151], born 14 Jun 1743 at Southborough, MA55. She died 25 Dec 1828, aged 86y at Rutland, MA (under the name Estabrook)98.

She married Daniel ESTABROOK 16 Apr 1766 at Rutland, listed as Persis of Paxton98. He was born about 1742, as calculated from his gravestone, died 11 Sep 1816, aged 74y at Rutland98, son of Cornet Daniel ESTABROOK and Hannah.
ii
Silas NEWTON [QQ289152], born 10 Dec 1744 at Southborough, MA55. He died 25 Jan 1816 at Paxton, MA178. Although this Silas Newton was born in Southborough, his family moved soon after his birth to Leicester and then to the part of Rutland that was set off as part of the new town of Paxton in 1765. He remained there and was thus evidently the Silas of Paxton who married Delia How.175 {p552} He made a will at Paxton, mentioning sons Silas, Horace, and Winsor, grandson Larkin Buckley Newton, granddaughters Emily Grosvenor Newton and Deborah Hall Newton (daughters of deceased son Larkin), heirs of deceased eldest daughter Persis Davis, and daughters Lucretia Bullard, Phebe Earle, Delia Harrington, and Patty Grosvenor175 {p552}. His will was proved 5 Mar 1816 in Worcester County, MA175 {p552},20 {docket 43416}.

He married first, Delia HOW, Silas of Paxton2 {107, 187}. She was born 24 Sep 1748 at Rutland, MA, registered as Dille98,2 {107, 187}, died 10 Feb 1783, aged 34y at Paxton, MA (under the name Newton)178,250,2 {p187}, was buried at Paxton, in Paxton Cemetery250, daughter of Paul HOW and Elizabeth HOWE. She was also known as Deliverance, registered as Deliverance on the birth records of her first five children. It is not entirely clear that Deliverance and Delia were the same person. Although the death record of Silas's next wife Matilda explicitly calls her his second wife, there is a four-year gap between the last child registered to "Deliverance" and the first to "Delia". Still, there is no record at Paxton of the death of a Deliverance Newton in that gap. One possible explanation would be that there were actually two Silases (and, indeed, Hezekiah Newton of Southborough, Leicester, Rutland, and Paxton had a son Silas of very nearly the same age), but there is no death record at Paxton for an extra Silas.

He married second, Matilda GATES 11 Feb 1789 at Rutland, MA, listed as Silas of Paxton98. She was born 13 Jan 1763 at Rutland98, died 3 Sep 1796, (sic) at Paxton, MA (under the name Newton)178, daughter of Stephen GATES and Damaris HOW.
iii
Catherine NEWTON [QQ289153], born 10 Jan 1746/47 at Southborough, MA55.
iv
Mehitabel NEWTON [QQ289194], born 22 Feb 1748/49 at Leicester, MA113.
v

He was born 1 Aug 1744 at Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland521 {468, 9},520, died 17 Nov 1837 at Shefford, QC521 {468, 9},520, was buried at West Shefford (Bromont), QC520. He was in the military about 1776, serving in the Revolution and engaged in several sanguinary battles; in one of which he was wounded in the head, and from his shattered skull thirteen pieces of bone were extracted that are yet preserved as mementoes of his daring courage and of his suffering, and of the righteous cause in which he perilled his life. His revolutionary services, as summed up on the Military Roles, were "42 months, 5 days, in the Light Infantry." There is no monument at Westborough to mark the resting place of this brave man and patriot soldier; his services have been forgotten, the fruits of them are seen and enjoyed. He sleeps, unconscious of neglect and of the harvest reaped from labor in part by him bestowed; of the extent of his country, now teeming with eightfold millions, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, jealous of its rights, and, as in his day, vindicating them with success [WARD p. 232]1 {p232}. He married first, Ruth RICE 4 Apr 1782 at Northborough, MA, listed as Elisha of Westborough59,1 {108, 143, 232}. She was born 2 Feb 1757 at Hardwick, MA114,1 {p108},45 {p22}, died about 1784, as Elisha remarried in 17851 {p232}, daughter of Solomon RICE and Anna RICE. Ward notes that this Ruth Rice was possibly the one who married Elisha Rice (WRN 1999). On the other hand, the Supplement states that she married John Rice (WRN 1182). We are tentatively following Ward for now, but further investigation is needed.1 {108, 232},45 {22, 39} Elisha RICE and Ruth RICE declared their intention to marry 9 Feb 1782 at Westborough, MA, listed as Ruth of Northborough57.

He married second, Temperance WYATT 4 Jan 1785 at Westborough, both of Westborough57,1 {p232}. She died Aug 1810 at Westborough, (not found in the published records)1 {p232}.
v
Joseph RICE [QQ59675, w2000], born 7 Apr 1760 at Westborough57,1 {p143}. He died 11 Sep 1826 at Windsor, ME, probably while on a journey to there1 {p233}. He was in the military about 1776, serving in the Revolution and was a pensioner. He was in the 5th Division, 6 months men, from Northborough, 6 July 1780; aged 20, 5 feet 9, light; and in March, 1781, in Brigham's Company, Cushing's Regiment, from Norhborough, aged 21, 5 feet 10, light -- Military Rolls. He was in the service from Westborough, 17781 {p233}.

He married Mary RICE 15 Jul 1784 at Westborough, MA, listed as Mary of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire57,1 {143, 233},45 {p58}. She was born about 17621 {p233}, died 1 Jun 1844, aged 83y at Oakham, MA, from a tumor in the abdomen215,1 {p233}, daughter of David RICE. Ward describes her as a daughter of David Rice of Fitzwilliam, NH. However, the history of Fitzwilliam makes no mention of a David Rice of the right age. It is possible that she was instead a daughter of Abraham (WRN 423). The Fitzwilliam history states that Ward missed the youngest child of Abraham (perhaps significantly named David). In fact, there is a gap in the list of Abraham's children around the time of Mary's birth.
