Asahel RICE [QQ2890, w675] (Noah⁴, Anna³, Edward², Edmund¹) , born 13 Feb 1741/42 at Sutton^{74,1 {p63}}, son of Noah RICE and Hannah WARREN. He died 21 Jun 1812, (1811 per Ward), aged 70y at Brimfield, MA^{103,1 {p115}}.

He married Mary BROWNELL 4 Feb 1762 at Mendon, MA, listed as Asael of Sutton and Mary Bromwell of Mendon^{74,213,1 {63, 115}}. She died 7 Jun 1821 at Sutton, MA (under the name Rice)^{74,1 {p115}}, daughter of Joseph BROWNELL and Elizabeth LEGG. She was also known as Mary BROMWELL, according to the marriage record. Ward has her (and we retain her) as the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Brownell of Mendon, but we see no corroboration. The Mendon vital records show the birth of Mary Broomel (sic), daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, 15 October 1740, which is a more likely ancestry^{74 {p339},213 {p47}}. Asahel RICE and Mary BROWNELL resided at Sutton^{1 {p115}}.

That death record fits with the other information that we know about Zerviah Rice Wheeler and provides compelling evidence that the later marriages are in error. The granddaughter Zerviah Sanford that Azariah Rice mentions in his will is presumably Zerviah Wheeler who married a Sanford.¹⁰⁹
