Adonijah remained there; it may have been his daughter Marian De Rice who married Thomas, son of Francis Ilere Rice. Ashur, after some years, was redeemed by his father, and returned to Westborough. The raid took place 8 Aug 1704 at Marlborough, MA1 {p61}. He was admitted to the church 1 May 1726 at Westborough, MA1 {p62}. He moved from Westboro to Spencer and purchased a house lot in 1736.1 {p62}

He married Tabitha. She was thinly documented.

She married Daniel HARDY 7 Dec 1727, (22nd per Ward; the earlier date is from the church records and is therefore not a report of the marriage intention filing) at Westborough, MA57 {p165},1 {p24},2 {p27},45 {p3}. Beriah RICE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Beriah RICE [QQ99, w213] (Anna3, Edward2, Edmund1) , born 20 Aug 1702 at Marlborough (Westborough), MA3,1 {p24},45 {p10}, son of Thomas RICE and Anna RICE. He died before 27 Jun 1764, when his will was recorded. Beriah may have been visiting son Stephen or Benjamin in Massachusetts when his will was written and at the time of his death.

    Judge Savary presents the List of Names of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, dated October 30th, 1765. Both Beriah and Beriah, Junr are listed. Paul Haseltine is also listed although we have good evidence that by late 1765 Paul was founding a new town in what is now the state of Vermont. We may assume that the town fathers padded the list of names as Beriah Sr was dead and Paul Heseltine was living in Vermont by that time115 {#5},116 {p105}. Ward reports that Beriah Rice moved in 1748 to Annapolis, NS. We now know that the year was 1760.1 {p62} Beriah Rice left Boston on 23 May 1760 on the ship Charming Molly and arrived at Annapolis, Nova Scotia, on 25 June 1760. He had with him two oxen and two cows. The passenger list shows three Rice males: Benjamin, Stephen, and Beriah, but perhaps both Beriah and his namesake son, as well as the two other sons named on the list, all traveled together. Then again, perhaps only one Beriah (but which one?) went on this voyage.117 {150, 151} He made a will 15 Jun 1763 at Worcester, MA, which was recorded 27 Jun 1764 at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The will cited his wife Marcy (sic), eldest son Judah, second son Asaph, third son Timothy, younger sons Beriah, Benjamin, Joseph, and Stephen, eldest daughter Marcy (sic) wife of Paul Hareltine (sic), second daughter Lucy, third daughter Rachael, and fourth daughter Sarah. Beriah left to his wife Marcy one half right to his farm "on the east side of the creek known as Bloody Bridge Creek (Annapolis, NS)..." for the space of six years "but at the expiration of said term the above mentioned half right (to the) farm shall be to son Timothy's hereafter ...". Beriah left the other half of his land and farm dwelling on the east side of Bloody Bridge Creek to his son Timothy. " I give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Mary, wife of Paul Haseltine, four pounds lawful money of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay."

    The will was written in Worcester (County?), MA and witnessed by Daniel Hardy, Abigail Adams, and Jonathan Bond and recorded by Francis Whipple, Justice of Peace. Your author notes that the names Adams, Bond, and Whipple are found nowhere in surviving records of Annapolis or Granville for the 1760s. Beriah Rice had close cousins by these names living at Westborough, MA at the time that the will was written. It is very likely that the will was written at Westborough, MA115 {#5}.

He married Mary GOODENOW 6 Jan 1730/31 at Westborough, MA1 {24, 62},45 {p10},57 {p161}. She was born 5 Apr 1712 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p62},46 {1:33}, died after Jun 1763. Although we have no record of Mary's death or her living in Nova Scotia, her husband Beriah Rice left her one half interest in his farm and dwelling on the east side of Bloody Bridge Creek in the Township of Annapolis, Nova Scotia. Your author considers it quite certain that Mary lived at Annapolis Royal after 1760 and died after Beriah's will was recorded, 27 June 1764115 {Wills 1:9}, daughter of Samuel GOODENOW and Sarah BRIGHAM. Beriah RICE and Mary GOODENOW were admitted to the church 30 May 1742 at Westborough, MA1 {p62}.

    Children of Beriah RICE and Mary GOODENOW:

i
Judah RICE, b. 1731, MA, d. 1801, NS
ii
Asaph RICE, b. 1732, MA, d. 1816, MA
iii
Timothy RICE [QQ2874, w664], born 18 Feb 1734/35 at Westborough57,1 {p62}. He died after 22 Jan 1823115 {#3964}. He resided in 1792 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, where he was listed by the township as overseer of highways117 {p172}. He made a will 22 Jan 1823 at Annapolis Royal, naming his nephews Benjamin and Asaph Rice, sons of brother Beriah Rice. Asaph Rice was designated as executor. Of Benjamin Rice, Timothy's will said: "Secondly I will and bequeath to my nephew Benjamin Rice, son of my brother Beriah Rice, the sum of five shillings lawful money of Nova Scotia and no more; for however affectionately disposed toward him I am convinced (with much regret) that acting otherwise would prove a hurt but no benefit to him, and what of his debts I have paid or am bound to pay, it is my will that the payment thereof be considered an ample equivalent to the wages which he may constituted unto for his former work on the farm and that those payments be considered in lieu of ..."115 {#3964}.
iv
Col. Stephen RICE, b. 1736, MA, d. 1831, MA
v
Mary RICE, b. 1739, MA
vi
Sarah RICE [QQ2877, w667], born 22 Mar 1741 at Westborough, MA57,1 {p62},45 {p10}. She probably died young. Her father's will mentions a "fourth daughter Sarah" who would be the one born in Upton.1 {p62},45 {p10}
vii
Lucy RICE [QQ2878, w668], born 19 Mar 1743 at Westborough57,1 {p63},45 {p10}. Although the Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, page 10, has Lucy married to Elkanah Morton, was his wife Lucy Rice (b 1743), daughter of Beriah, or Lucy Wheelock, daughter of Rachel Rice (b 1745)? Your author has chosen Lucy Wheelock as the date of Lucy Morton's son's birth is 1793, an almost impossible date for Lucy Rice (b 1743).
viii
Rachel RICE, b. 1746, MA
ix
Beriah RICE Jr, b. 1747, MA, d. 1818, NS
x
Dr. Benjamin RICE [QQ2881, w671], born 11 May 1749 at Westborough, (born at Annapolis per Ward, in error), (not found in the published records)1 {63, 114}. He died in 1782 at Boston, MA1 {p114},2 {p100}. Occupation: a physician, after 17731 {p114}. Removed 17 May 1760 from Boston, on the Charming Molly with 45 persons aboard. On board were three Rice men -- Benjamin, Stephen, and Beriah2 {p116}. He resided between 1760 and 1769 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS, and is listed as a petitioner for the Grant of Confirmation of the Township of Annapolis, 30 October 1765 and living single in the 1768 census for Annapolis. His name does not appear in the 1770 census for Annapolis117 {151, 153, 156},116 {p105},1 {p114}. Graduated in 1773 - Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, attending from 17691 {p114}. He resided between 1775 and 1782 at Boston, MA1 {p114}.

He married Martha BENT 31 Jan 1774, (1744 per Boston copy) at Sudbury, MA, listed as Benjamin of Boston and Martha of Sudbury1 {63, 114},11 {p257},37 {p319}. She was thinly documented, daughter of Micah BENT and Grace RICE.
xi
Sarah RICE, b. 1751, MA, d. 1821
xii
Joseph RICE [QQ3504, w671c], born 28 May 1753 at Upton, MA118,45 {p10}. He died before 15 Jun 1839115 {#307},117 {p569}. He resided in 1792 at Annapolis Royal, Annapolis Co, NS117 {p172}. He made a will 7 Jun 1827 at Annapolis Royal, which was recorded 15 June 1839. In the will he leaves his estate to widow Elizabeth Dowley; nephew Calvin Wheelock and his son Calvin; "4th and youngest daughter of Elizabeth Dowley called Elizabeth"; and Elizabeth Ingles115 {#307}.

He married FAIRN, but this has not been proven45 {p10}. She was thinly documented.

Thomas FORBUSH [QQ1526, w189] (Dorcas3 RICE, Edward2, Edmund1) , born 14 Oct 1695 at Marlborough, MA3,1 {p21},2 {p26},45 {p2},46 {1:2}, son of Thomas FORBUSH and Dorcas RICE. He died before 17832 {p26}.

He married Hannah BELLOWS 6 Jan 1718/19 at Marlborough3,1 {p21},2 {p26},45 {p2},46 {1:204}. She was born 12 May 1695 at Marlborough3, daughter of John BELLOWS and Hannah. She was also known as Ann. She was also known as Joanna. Although the Rice Genealogical Register describes her as Ann or Joanna, daughter of Benjamin, her marriage record at Marlborough clearly calls her Hannah, as do the birth records of all her children at Westborough. She was evidently the daughter of John and Hannah Bellows instead. The Marlborough vital records show no trace of any Benjamin Bellows in that period.
