John Wolcott's company on the Lexington alarm at the opening of the Revolutionary War, spending 12 days in the field, and soon after enlisted in Capt. Captain Tilly Rice was appointed guardian for Molly and Thomas Rice, children of his brother Edward (WRN 571), in 1787; they discharged him of that trust on 27 April 1790.^{1 {p101}} He made a will 17 Jan 1803, mentioning sons Charles, Tilly, Samuel B., and Merrick; daughter Frances Fiske; grandchildren, children of daughter Sally, late wife of Maj. He was born 9 Sep 1758 at Uxbridge, MA (under the name Read)^{191,71 {p205},1 {p175}}, died 18 May 1822, aged 63y at Brookfield, MA^{109,1 {p175},2 {p252}}, son of Joseph REED and Eunice TAFT. Occupation: of the firm Reed & Rice, doing extensive business in Brookfield, Mass^{1 {p175}}. He died 14 Apr 1828, aged 68y at Brookfield, MA^{109,1 {p174},56}. He was buried at West Brookfield, MA, in New (Pine Grove) Cemetery⁵⁶. He was a Representative in 1813 and also 1816^{1 {p174}}.

He married Abigail BRADISH 20 Oct 1806, (4 November 1808 per Brookfield records, evidently in error) at Brookfield, MA, listed as Samuel of Brookfield^{109,1 {100, 174},45 {p41}}. She was born about Feb 1784, as calculated from the death record, died 5 May 1864, aged 80y 3m at West Brookfield, MA (under the name Rice), from old age^{181 {176:316.11},56}, was buried at West Brookfield, in New (Pine Grove) Cemetery⁵⁶, daughter of John BRADISH and Elizabeth MELLAGE. Col. Samuel Buckminster RICE and Abigail BRADISH resided at West Brookfield^{1 {p174}}. The History of North Brookfield accepts the 1808 marriage date for this couple and then adds exactly two years to the birth dates of all but the first and last of their children (and three years and one year, respectively, to those two).^{296 {p722}}

He died Feb 1776, aged 41y at Brookfield, (not found in the published records)^{1 {p100}}. He made a will 12 Feb 1776, mentioning sons Cheney and Thomas; and daughter unnamed. James Convers and Daniel Gilbert, Executors^{1 {p101}}. His will was proved 28 Feb 1776 in Worcester County, MA^{1 {p101}}. James Convers and Daniel Gilbert became guardians for Cheney, Molly, and Thomas on 6 April 1778, and Capt Tilly Rice for Molly and Thomas in 1787; they discharged him of that trust on 27 April 1790.

ii: Nahum FAY [QQ57167, w1328], born 27 Jul 1757 at Westborough (Northborough), MA^{57,59,1 {101, 175},2 {p253}}. He died 16 Nov 1841, aged 85y at Northborough, MA^{59,1 {p175},2 {p253}}. Occupation: the town clerk, selectman and representative from Northborough to the General Court; he was also the magistrate. He was considered a useful man in his day and generation^{1 {p175}}.

He married Lucy WARREN 7 Dec 1779, Nahum of Northborough and Lucy of Westborough, Mass. At the time of their wedding a great snow rendered the roads impassable, and embargoed all ordinary vehicles of conveyance. Their wedding guests drew Lucy across lots on a hand sled - nearly three miles to her new home; in the mean time, the weary Nahum followed on rackets after the sled, with one eye on the team, and the other, and his hand, upon the precious freight to save it from a plunge, for if the sled should upset or what was more likely, be overturned - for there were mischievous rouges, even in those days^{1 {101, 175},2 {p253}}. She was born 7 Feb 1762 at Westborough, MA (under the name Warrin)^{57,1 {p140},2 {p253}}, died 23 Oct 1850, aged 88y 8m 16d at Northborough, MA (under the name Fay)^{59,1 {p175}}, daughter of Moses WARREN and Persis RICE. ii: Edward RICE [QQ58476, w1371], born 16 Mar 1784 at Marlborough^{3 {p154},1 {p104}}. He died 19 May 1871, (20th per state records), aged 87y 2m at Marlborough, from old age^{181 {239:186},56}. He was buried at Marlborough, in Brigham Cemetery⁵⁶.

He married Susanna FELTON 26 Nov 1809 at Marlborough^{3,1 {104, 180},2 {p193},45 {p43}}. She was born 29 Oct 1788 at Marlborough^{3,2 {p193}}, died 19 Jun 1883, aged 94y 7m at Marlborough (under the name Rice), from paralysis^{181 {347:151},56}, was buried at Marlborough, in Brigham Cemetery⁵⁶, daughter of Joel FELTON and Susanna HUNT.

She married Luke FOSGATE 21 May 1817 at Marlborough, MA, listed as Luke of Berlin^{3,1 {104, 235},2 {p256},45 {p21}}. He was born 5 Aug 1787 at Berlin, MA^{186,2 {p256}}, died 21 Nov 1873, aged 86y 3m 20d at Harvard, MA³⁰⁴, son of Joel FOSGATE and Naomi GILBERT. Luke FOSGATE and Mary RICE declared their intention to marry 21 Mar 1817 at Berlin, MA, listed as Mary of Marlborough¹⁸⁶.
v: Henry RICE [QQ58482, w1374], born 23 Jun 1794 at Marlborough, MA^{3,1 {p104},56}. He died Dec 1858⁵⁶. He was buried at Lincoln, MA, in Arborvitae (Triangle) Cemetery, "Henry Rice, June 1794 - Dec 1858, Mary Sherburne his wife, Aug 1797 - Feb 1887"^132,56. The Rice Genealogical Register and Ward's The Rice Family have both confused this Henry Rice with other Henry Rices by mismatching the births and marriages. The correct identification for this Henry Rice is clear from the gravestone inscriptions at the Arborvitae (Triangle) Cemetery in Lincoln, MA. Ward was wrong in asserting that this was the Henry of Billerica who married Mary White Lee, and the Rice Genealogical Register was wrong in asserting that the husband of Mery Sherburne was Henry (WRN 2553a) son of Luke.⁵⁶

He married Mary SHERBOURNE 20 May 1820, (March per Rice Gen'l Register) at Littleton, MA, listed as Henry of Marlborough and Mary of Littleton^{86 {p251},2 {248, 499},45 {p41}}. She was born about 30 Aug 1797 at Chelmsford, MA^{56,132,181 {383:111}}, died 19 Feb 1887, aged 89y 5m 20d at Lincoln, MA (under the name Rice), from pneumonia^{181 {383:111},56}, was buried at Lincoln, in Arborvitae (Triangle) Cemetery¹³², daughter of Samuel SHERBOURNE and Sarah READ. Henry RICE and Mary SHERBOURNE declared their intention to marry 4 May 1820 at Littleton, MA^{86 {p251}}.

She married Leonard CHAFFIN 28 Nov 1805 at Princeton, both of Princeton^{105,1 {104, 180},45 {p43}}. He was born 19 Oct 1779^{45 {p43}}.
ii: John RICE [QQ58486, w1376], born 24 Sep 1786 at Princeton^{105,1 {p104},56}. He died 20 Sep 1875, aged 88y 11m 26d at Princeton, from burns^{181 {276:416.25},185 {2:241}}. He was buried at Cambridge, MA, in Mount Auburn Cemetery⁴⁷. He was also known as John Parker, by act of Legislature^{1 {p181}}. He resided about 1855 at Boston, MA, the place of his business^{1 {p181}}.

He married Sarah CROWNINSHIELD 18 Nov 1816 at Salem, MA, listed as Sarah of Salem^{36,1 {104, 181}}. She was born 22 Jun 1784 at Boston, MA^{185 {2:241},56,1 {p181}}, died 5 Feb 1847 at Boston (under the name Rice)^{1 {p181},56}, was buried at Cambridge, MA, in Mount Auburn Cemetery⁴⁷, daughter of George CROWNINGSHIELD and Mary DERBY.

Ward refers to the death in 1853 of the father of Sarah Ann Brigham (q.v.), but calls him "Henry Jr." It is not clear who was meant to be Henry Sr in that context.^{1 {p180}}
