Jonas WILDER

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Jonas WILDER [QQ1916] (Sarah4 WHITE, Mary3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 16 Nov 1701 at Lancaster, MA53 {p49},2 {12, 44}, son of John WILDER and Sarah WHITE. He died 15 Apr 1796, aged 96y at Hartland, CT, (not found in the published records)2 {p44},56. He was buried at Hartland, in West Hartland Cemetery56. It is tempting to conflate his two wives, since they had exactly the same name and were evidently almost the same age. Col. Jonathan WHITE

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Col. Jonathan WHITE [QQ3657] (Josiah4, Mary3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 4 Oct 1706, (literally 1709, but that would conflict with Hannah's birth - it is clear from the multiple baptism record that Jonathan was the eldest child and was therefore born in 1706) at Lancaster, MA53 {p49},2 {12, 46}, son of Deacon Josiah WHITE and Abigail WHITCOMB. He died 4 Dec 1788, aged 80y249,2 {p46},56. He was buried 6 Dec 1788 at Heath, MA, in South Cemetery56,249.

He married Esther WILDER 22 Jun 1732 at Lancaster, MA53 {p26},2 {12, 46}. She was baptized 8 Mar 1712/13, (February per Rice Gen'l Register) at 1st Church, Lancaster, MA53 {p274},2 {p46}, died 23 Nov 1788, (4 December per Rice Gen'l Register), aged 76y (under the name White)249,2 {p46},56, was buried 24 Nov 1788 at Heath, MA, in South Cemetery, described as wife of Col. Jonathan White56,249, daughter of Col. James WILDER and Abigail GARDNER. The Rice Genealogical Register lists her name as Wilder (correct) on p. 12 and White (incorrect) on p. 46.2 {12, 46} She was admitted to the church 23 Jul 1732 at Lancaster, MA53 {p272}.

    Children of Col. Jonathan WHITE and Esther WILDER:

i
Jonathan WHITE [QQ15747], born 26 Apr 1733, (1734 per town records, but that would conflict with the baptism) at Lancaster53 {p66},2 {p46}. He died 2 Dec 1736 at Lancaster53 {p158},2 {p46}. Note that there is a conflict between the recorded birth and baptism dates for both Jonathan and his next-younger sibling Esther. It seems clear, though, that there really was only one Jonathan born in this 1733-34 time frame, for there is only one birth on record and only one baptism. Of course, the conflict could also be resolved by assuming an error in the baptism date, but the church records from that era were more carefully kept on the whole. Note that the deaths of the two Esthers and one Jonathan were all recorded at the same time, making it seem especially likely that these death records are complete. Moreover, it would be quite surprising for this Jonathan to have lived more than two years and never been baptized.53 {p66},2 {p46}
ii
Esther WHITE [QQ15749], born 11 Jun 1735, (1736 per town records, but that conflicts with the baptism, which is more reliable) at Lancaster53 {p67},2 {p46}. She died 7 Dec 1738 at Lancaster53 {p158},2 {p46}.
iii
Esther WHITE [QQ15750], born 15 Oct 1738 at Lancaster53 {p67},2 {p46}. She died 5 Jan 1739 at Lancaster53 {p158},2 {p46}.

Martha WHITE [QQ3662] (Josiah4, Mary3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 24 Nov 1717 at Lancaster53 {p50},2 {12, 47}, daughter of Deacon Josiah WHITE and Abigail WHITCOMB. She died 6 Nov 1811, aged 94y at Lancaster (under the name Wilder), from old age53 {194, 357}.

She married Deacon David WILDER 4 Dec 1751 at Lancaster53 {p21},2 {12, 47}. He died 17 Nov 1776 at Lancaster53 {327, 373}, son of Thomas WILDER and Susanna HUNT. He was chosen deacon of the 1st Church 24 Sep 1761 at Lancaster53 {p373}. His parentage is uncertain. There is no record of his birth in Lancaster, and only two baptisms there show any likelihood of being his: one in 1714 was the presumably infant son of Ebenezer, and the other in 1737 was an adult. Although the Rice Gen'l Register asserts that David's parents were Thomas and Susannah (Hunt) Wilder, the church records show numerous baptisms of their children, including seven all at once in 1718 when they joined the church, and no son David is listed. Unfortunately, the records of David's death do not specify his age. They declared their intention to marry in 1751 at Lancaster53 {p33}.
