Col Jonathan BREWER [QQ3888] (Jonathan4, Elizabeth3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1) , born 3 Feb 1725/26 at Framingham (under the name Bruer)16,2 {17, 60}, son of Jonathan BREWER and Arabella GOULDING. He died 4 Jan 17842 {p60},4. He was buried 9 Jan 178432 {p191}. He was in the military serving in the French and Indian Wars4. He was in the military serving as a colonel of militia and commanded a regiment at Bunker Hill at the beginning of the American Revolution32 {p191}. He made a will 28 Dec 1783 at Waltham, MA, which was presented for probate on 8 April 1784 to Oliver Prescott, Esquire, Judge of the Probate of Wills, etc. in the County of Middlesex, by Francis Brewer, Widow of the said deceased, Executrix. The will mentions wife Frances and children Francis, Susannah, and Martha. No daughter Frances is mentioned20 {docket 2555}. The Rice Genealogical Register, pp. 17, 60, gives a second wife for Col. Jonathan Brewer - Dorothy Fowle. The published vital records of Waltham list such a marriage on 30 December 1772. Your authors note that Col. Jonathan Brewer had a nephew Jonathan much closer in age to the bride. Col. Brewer's will and his widow's obituary provide compelling evidence that the 1772 marriage was for a different Jonathan Brewer, perhaps the nephew.2 {17, 60},34 {3:157},202,20 {docket 2555}

He married Frances BUCKMINSTER about 17632 {17, 60}. She was born 23 Nov 1738 at Framingham, MA16,2 {p60}, died in 1823, aged 83y at Woodstock, VT, widow of Col. Jonathan Brewer of Waltham, Mass202, daughter of Col. Joseph BUCKMINSTER and Sarah LAWSON. Col Jonathan BREWER and Frances BUCKMINSTER resided after 1763 at Framingham, MA2 {p60}. John BARBER

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

John BARBER [QQ1859] (Anna4 TAYLOR, Hannah3 RICE, Henry2, Edmund1) , born 27 Aug 1708 at Medfield, MA87 {p17},51 {p19},124 {p314}, son of Deacon George BARBOUR and Anna TAYLOR. He died before 14 Jun 1755125. He resided after 1739 at Sudbury, MA87 {p28}.

He married Hannah RICE 20 Oct 1735, (23 October per county records) at Sudbury, listed as John of Medfield1 {25, 43},2 {39, 335},45 {3, 5},11 {166, 258}. She was born 31 Jul 1713 at Sudbury11,1 {p25},45 {p3}, died before 20 Feb 178487 {p28}, daughter of Ephraim RICE and Hannah LIVERMORE. She made a will 21 Mar 1783 at Sudbury, mentioning her son John Barber's widow Abigail, children of her deceased daughter Abigail Loker, her daughter Hannah Loker, and her sons Samuel, Oliver, Nathan, Ephraim, and Silas Barber22 {27:281}. Her heirs made an agreement in 1786 to dispose of the property she had left them (a house and four acres in Sudbury). The agreement was signed by Ephraim Barber on the one hand and by Nathan, Oliver and Silas Barber, Henry Locar with his wife Hannah, Moses Locar, Benjamin Mills with his wife Sarah, and Jeremiah Smith with his wife Mary.22 {27:281} Although the Sudbury vital records show only one marriage of a Hannah Rice to a John Barber, Supplement 1 to The Rice Family, ascribes that marriage to two different Hannahs of about the same age, daughters of Ephraim and Phineas, respectively. Ward gives the nod to Phineas' daughter. However, Ephraim Rice remained at Sudbury while Phineas Rice moved to Stow when both Hannahs were still teenagers. Compelling evidence that Hannah was the daughter of Ephraim is supplied by a letter written by John Barber on 11 July 1755, while at a military camp, to his wife Hannah in Sudbury (see NEHGR 27:286). In the letter, he reports that Isaac Rice is in the same camp with him and is well. Significantly, the end of the letter indicates it was actually sent (for transmittal to Barber's wife) to Gershom Rice, in Sudbury, New-England. Gershom and Isaac Rice, sons of Ephraim, would have been Hannah's brothers. Therefore, your authors must conclude that the Hannah Rice who married John Barber was Hannah (WRN 238), daughter of Ephraim Rice.22 {27:286}

    Children of John BARBER and Hannah RICE are shown under Hannah RICE.
