Thankful HOUGHTON [QQ3700] (Thankful4 WHITE, Mary3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 3 Mar 1713/14 at Lancaster, MA53 {p52},2 {13, 49}, daughter of Jonathan HOUGHTON and Thankful WHITE. She was added to full communion at the church 9 May 1736 at Lancaster53 {p284}.

She married Simon WHITCOMB 12 Jul 1733 at Lancaster, performed by Joseph Wilder, Esq53 {p26},2 {13, 49}. He was baptized 7 Mar 1713/14, (17th per Rice Gen'l Register) at 1st Church, Lancaster, MA53 {p274},2 {p49}, son of David WHITCOMB Sr and Mary HAYWARD. The Rice Genealogical Register has all of Simon and Thankful's children born at Bolton. However, the first two children were born before Bolton was set off as a town, and so their births were naturally recorded at Lancaster.2 {p64}

Children of Thankful HOUGHTON and Simon WHITCOMB:

i
Mary WHITCOMB [QQ15943], born 29 Sep 1734 at Lancaster, MA53 {p62},2 {49, 62}.

She died 23 Nov 1811, aged 66y at Winchendon, MA (under the name McElwain)240. Note that the Rice Gen'l Register has confused this Rebecca, the daughter of Simon Whitcomb, with a different Rebecca born the same year to John Whitcomb, also in Bolton. The other Rebecca is the one who married Calvin Greenleaf. This one married James McElwain instead.

She married James MCELWAIN 10 Oct 1769 at Bolton, MA119. He was born 4 Nov 1744 at Bolton119, died 24 Nov 1820, aged 76y at Winchendon, MA240, was buried at Winchendon, in Center Cemetery240, son of Andrew MCELWAIN and Hezadiah.

Mary HOUGHTON [QQ3701] (Thankful4 WHITE, Mary3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 19 Sep 1715, (12th per Rice Gen'l Register) at Lancaster, MA53 {p52},2 {13, 50}, daughter of Jonathan HOUGHTON and Thankful WHITE.

She married Nathaniel SAWYER 19 Mar 1734/35 at Lancaster, performed by Joseph Wilder, Esq53 {p26},2 {13, 50}. He was born about 1707 at probably Lancaster, MA48, son of Nathaniel SAWYER and Mary.

Children of Mary HOUGHTON and Nathaniel SAWYER:

i
Oliver SAWYER [QQ15958], born 24 Jul 1735 at Lancaster, MA53 {p63},2 {p50}. He died young2 {p50}.
ii
Mary SAWYER [QQ15959], born 24 Jan 1737/38 at Lancaster53 {p65},2 {p50}. She died 19 Dec 1821, aged 80y (sic) at Leominster, MA (under the name Carter)224.

She married Phineas CARTER 22 Feb 1758 at Lancaster, MA53 {p87},2 {p50}. He was born 5 Dec 1727, (sic) at Lancaster53 {p55}, died 16 Dec 1809, aged 82y at Leominster, MA, from old age224, son of Capt. Thomas CARTER and Ruth PHELPS. Phineas CARTER and Mary SAWYER declared their intention to marry 24 Oct 1757 at Lancaster, MA53 {p84}.
iii
Elizabeth SAWYER [QQ15961], born 5 Jul 1741 at Lancaster53 {p69},2 {p50}. She died 3 Oct 1742 at Lancaster53 {p158}. The identification of this Elizabeth's death record is problematic, since the date is after both the birth and baptism of the next sibling, who was also named Elizabeth. One possibility is that the death date is wrong.
iv
Elizabeth SAWYER [QQ15962], born 24 Jul 1742 at Lancaster53 {p69},2 {p50},14 {p32}. She died 15 Jan 1813, aged 70y (under the name Nichols)56. She was buried at Springfield, VT, in Summer Hill Cemetery56. The records of her birth, baptism, marriage intention, marriage, and death all call her Eliza or Elizabeth. Your authors have not found any primary records that use the name Relief. The mistaken assertion in the Rice Gen'l Register that she was named Relief is apparently based on a misreading of her gravestone, which describes her as "Elizabeth Relict of Levi".56

She married Levi NICHOLS 29 Nov 1759 at Lancaster, MA, both of Lancaster53 {p87},2 {p50}. He was born in 173914 {p32}. They declared their intention to marry 15 Sep 1759 at Lancaster53 {p88}.
v
Nathaniel SAWYER Jr [QQ15964], born 21 Feb 1744/45 at Lancaster53 {p70},2 {50, 136}.

Married Catherine ELLIS. She was born 28 Sep 1748 at Lancaster (Sterling), MA, (not found in the published records)2 {p136}. They declared their intention to marry 20 Oct 1771 at Lancaster, MA, listed as Katherine of Medway53 {p45},2 {50, 136}.
vi
Thankful SAWYER [QQ15966], born 8 Oct 1752 at Lancaster53 {p77},2 {p50}.

She married first, Isaac CLARK. He was thinly documented. They declared their intention to marry 2 Feb 1775 at Lancaster, listed as Isaac of Keene and Thankful of Lancaster53 {p135}.

She married second, HOUGHTON, her 2nd marriage2 {p50}. He was thinly documented.
vii
Jonathan SAWYER [QQ15969], born about 1754 at Lancaster, (not found in the published records)2 {p50}.

Your authors note that some sources, including the Rice Genealogical Register, claim this Keziah married Ebenezer Buss. However, the wife of Ebenezer was a different, younger Keziah Houghton, as is shown by her death record.

He married Sarah HOUGHTON 4 Feb 1740, but this date is clearly wrong2 {p13}. She was born about 1722 in probably Massachusetts. She was possibly the dauther of James and Sarah born at Lancaster in 1723, or perhaps the daughter of Lt. John baptized there that same year.53 {50, 277} They declared their intention to marry 22 Oct 1746 at Lancaster, MA, listed as Jonathan of Leominster and Sarah of Lancaster53 {p31}.
