Lydia ALLEN

This report includes only the first 6 generations of the Deacon Edmund RICE clan. A nine-generation version is available to members of the Edmund Rice (1638) Association. Learn more about Deacon Edmund RICE and these pages at our home page.

Lydia ALLEN [QQ4325] (Benjamin4, Frances3 RICE, Thomas2, Edmund1) , born 29 Mar 1735, (1734 per Rice Gen'l Register) at Weston (Lincoln), MA132,2 {p29}, daughter of Benjamin ALLEN and Eunice GALE. The Wheeler genealogy incorrectly asserts that Lydia married Daniel Billings as her second husband. It was actually Lydia's daughter who married Daniel (q.v.).

She married John WHEELER 31 Oct 1754 at Lincoln, MA, listed as John of Lincoln132,2 {p29}. He was born 5 Sep 1733 at Concord, MA35 {p135},440 {p147}, died 20 Jul 1765 at Lincoln, MA132,440 {p925}, son of Thomas WHEELER and Mary MUNROE.

Children of Lydia ALLEN and John WHEELER:

i
Lucy WHEELER [QQ32831], born 27 Jul 1755 at Lincoln132,440 {p925}.
ii
Silence WHEELER [QQ32830], born 1 Mar 1757 at Lincoln132,440 {p925}.
iii
Lydia WHEELER [QQ32866], born 8 Feb 1759 at Lincoln132,440 {p925}.

She married Daniel BILLINGS 11 Jan 1779 at Lincoln, but the month is torn in the original church records. January is inferred as the expected month of marriage, given the recorded date of filing the intention. Note that the Wheeler genealogy ascribes this marriage incorrectly to Lydia's mother132,440 {p925}. He was born 25 Dec 1753 at Concord, MA35 {p188}, died 28 Feb 1805 at Mason, NH125, son of Daniel BILLINGS and Elizabeth FARRAR. Relocated before 1792 to Mason, from Lincoln, MA, and appeared then on the tax rolls of Mason. Probate records in Nashua, NH, show that Lydia Billings survived her husband, Daniel, a cooper of Mason, NH. She was living in Temple, NH, on 7 Oct 1805. Daniel had had a long sickness before his death, and Lydia was poverty stricken and requested help from the town.20 {#0512} The published vital records of Clinton, Maine, show the same children with nearly the same birth dates shown here. However, the town of Clinton did not even exist at the time most of these children were born. The book attributes its information to the Billings Bible (Mary) in the possession of Miss Georgia E. Billings of Clinton, ME. Your authors have not determined when that Bible was printed, but believe it to be a secondary source. In particular, it has Daniel's wives mixed up (the names are clearly established by the vital records of both Lincoln and Concord). For further confirmation, we reviewed microfilms of the original Lincoln vital records and found that the birth dates of the children were entered chronologically as the events occurred.132,441 They declared their intention to marry 28 Dec 1778 at Lincoln, MA132 {p93}.
iv
John WHEELER [QQ32829], born 23 Mar 1761 at Lincoln132,442 {p7},287 {W27876:3},443. He died 28 Jan 1845, aged 83y 10m at Westmoreland, NH444 {p577},442 {p7},445 {p54},443. He was in the military between Dec 1777 and 2 APR 1778, serving in the Revolutionary War as a private under Capt. Simon Hunt and Colonel Brooks442 {p7},287 {W27876:3, 7},443. He was in the military between 2 Apr 1778 and 3 JUL 1778, under Capt. Daniel Harrington442 {p7},287 {W27876:3, 7},443. He was in the military in 1780, serving under Capt. Abraham Andrews and Colonel Cyprian Howe442 {p7},287 {W27876:3, 7},443. He was awarded a pension of $30.33 per annum 28 Feb 1833 at Westmoreland287 {W27876:2},443. He was living in 1840, with Ambrose Graves. On the 1840 Revolutionary Pensioners list443.

He married first, Abigail FLINT 29 Dec 1784 at Walpole, NH444 {p577},442 {p7},443. She was born 30 Mar 1763, (daughter of Ruth, widow) at Lincoln, MA444 {p577},132,443, died 28 Apr 1813 at Westmoreland, NH444 {p577},445 {p54},443, daughter of Ephraim FLINT and Ruth WHEELER.

He married second, Sally WHITE 21 Jun 1816 at Westmoreland, performed by Joseph Burt, Justice of the Peace444 {p577},446 {69/50},442 {p7},287 {W27876:5},443. She was born 5 Apr 1775444 {p577},443, daughter of Capt. Joseph WHITE and Keziah BRITTON. She received a pension of $30.33 based on her husband's service in the Revolutionary War 3 Feb 1853 at Alstead, NH442 {p7},287 {W27876:4},443.
