Mary RICE [QQ3083, w790] (Jotham⁴, James³, Thomas², Edmund¹) , born about 1737 at Worcester, MA, (not found in the published records)^{1 {p70}}, daughter of Jotham RICE and Mary EARL. She died 20 May 1823, aged 89y 8m (sic) at Petersham, MA (under the name Howe)^{45 {p28},123 {p180}}.

She married Sylvanus HOWE 26 Dec 1763 at Petersham, listed as Sylvanus of Petersham and Mary of Rutland District^{123,97,1 {70, 128},45 {p28}}. He was born 6 Apr 1727 at Marlborough, MA (under the name How)^{3,1 {p128},45 {p28}}, died 16 Feb 1802, aged 75y at Petersham, MA^{123,1 {p128},45 {p28}}, was buried at Petersham, in Howe Cemetery⁴³³, son of Jonathan HOWE Jr and Sarah HAPGOOD. He resided in 1749 at Marlborough, MA⁴³³. He acquired his land in Petersham from John Sawyer, apparently the father-in-law of Mary Rice's brother Ralph.⁴³³ He was in the military serving in Capt. Wheeler's company of Minutemen in 1775 and in Col. Sparhawk's regiment in 1777⁴³³. They resided at Petersham, MA^{1 {p128}}.

The Supplement claims George never married, but that claim seems to rest solely on the fact that his gravestone refers to him as the son of Sylvanus and Mary Howe.^{45 {p28}}

He was born about Dec 1781 at Barre, as calculated from the death record, died 10 Aug 1861, aged 79y 8m at Barre, from old age^{181 {149:201.28},56}, was buried at Barre, in Lincoln Cemetery⁵⁶, son of Zaccheus ATWOOD and Chloe HOVEY. v: Moses RICE [QQ59160, w1750], born 10 Jun 1786 at Barre, (not found in the published records)^{1 {p128},2 {p279}}. He died 24 May 1857 at Newfane, VT^{2 {p279}}. Vital records show death of Mary Ann Rice at age 5, daughter of Moses, 11 September 1845. A letter from one of the family says that a daughter of Moses and Persis Rice married a Leon Lamb and lived in Lilliamsville. Possibly Julia Ann Mary is a mixup of two girls.^{2 {p280}}

She was born 21 Dec 1786^{2 {p279}}, was enumerated in 1860 at Newfane, with her son Nelson W. and his family^{303 {1325:367A}}, died 12 Feb 1867, (or 13 August)^{2 {p279}}, daughter of Jonas COOK. They resided at Newfane^{1 {p208}}. They were enumerated in 1850 at Newfane^{140 {929:28}}.

Therefore, we have tentatively assigned him as the son of Barzillai Rice and Silence Gould mentioned in the vital records of Dummerston. Future research may overturn this hypothesis.

He married Beulah STONE 15 Feb 1762 at Sudbury, according to the published vital records of Sudbury. The Rice Gen'l Register asserts that this is the date of Beulah's death, but it does not say whether that assertion is based on an inspection of the original records or on pure intuition. The birth records for Thomas's children show the mother as Beulah, but there are no records of children born to Thomas in the 1760's. Either he married two different Beulahs, or the date of this marriage is incorrect in the vital records. The Simon Stone Genealogy asserts that the marriage date is wrong in only one digit and that it should be 1742, but does not comment on the published vital records^{2 {29, 83},11 {p163},126 {p83}}. She was born 18 May 1726 at Sudbury (under the name Ston)^{11,126 {p83}}, daughter of Joseph STONE and Mary WHEELER. Her identity may perhaps be established by examination of the deeds of Middlesex or Worcester County, since the Simon Stone Genealogy states that her father conveyed his estate to his children by deed during his lifetime.^{126 {p82}}

Married Josiah HOBBS. He was born in 1721 at Boston, MA, (not found in the published records)^17,439, died in 1802 at Brookfield, MA, apparently fixed by reference to the published sermons of the Rev. Nathan Fiske, minister at Brookfield, who preached a sermon eulogizing Josiah, (not found in the published records)⁴³⁹, son of Josiah HOBBS and Esther DAVENPORT. He was a twin of John. They were born on Governor's Island in Boston Harbor, where their parents were living temporarily.⁴³⁹ He was covenanted to the church 21 Jun 1741 at Weston, MA^{65 {p429}}. He was admitted to the church 11 Oct 1741 at Weston^{65 {p438}}. Relocated about 1744 to Brookfield, MA⁴³⁹. He was dismissed to the Brookfield church 15 Apr 1753 at Weston, MA^{65 {p448}}.
